No point in trying to carry on a conversation with her. She's the person who stated that there were "no heroes in the Civil War".
Discussion and debate is pointless.
You are correct about one thing. There can be no discussion with anyone who holds such a myopic view of our history, especially if you believe exactly what you were fed in grade school.
Many scholars discuss the Civil War and how it could have been avoided. Most of the discussions center around the sitting President.
No one knows for certain, of course, because history affords us no mulligans, but people engage in rational discussions none the less. Lincoln, as one might imagine, is no hero in those ongoing discussions.
One main cause of the war was the election of Abraham Lincoln as President. As soon as he was elected in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded from The Union.
Lincoln, declared these acts of secession illegal, and asked Congress for 500,000 soldiers to prevent a potential rebellion. Maybe he should have foreseen the end to this aggressive path...and tried another approach.
The Southern states did not support Lincoln, and many scholars say he favored the Northern States. A solution to this problem would have been to impeach President Lincoln and replace him with someone who didn't care about the Union or Confederate States.
The Civil War began in April 1861, and lasted for four years.
Over 600,000 soldiers were killed and millions more were maimed and wounded. This number does not include civilians or the newly freed population--many of whom were murdered along the way.
The war left the South devastated with no recovery plan in place for any folks living there. Our country was torn apart.... literally. These were very dark times, and, historically speaking, not that long ago.
In conclusion, I see no reason to glorify any part of this war. But I'm not much for putting 'Warriors' on a pedestal unless they can bust a trey.
