Sorry if this has already been posted but hadn’t seen this discussed, even if it is a couple of weeks old. Yikes...

NOTHING he said is untrue! They're much better off in the Patriot League! I still think their hoops program would thrive in the ACC.

Edsall took UConn to the Fiesta Bowl. Bet against him at your own risk.

Parody post?

What has he done since 2010 at both Maryland and UConn?

You have to hand it to UConn.
They stirred the realignment pot as well as anyone has. Multiple posters on every board trying to convince the world that UConn should be chosen for the next spot available in the ACC and then the Big Ten.
The school went for broke.....literally.

What might have been...........had it not been for that lawsuit.

I’m not betting against Randy, he’s pulling the biggest con since the intentionally offensive musical in “The Producers” by Mel Brooks. UConn is the loser, to wit:

“Nothing signifies the ineptitude of the Huskies better than the contract of current football coach Randy Edsall, which is laden with the dumbest set of bonuses in athletic history. Benedict has padded retread Edsall’s wallet with tens of thousands of dollars for doing useless things like scoring first in a game ($2,000), having a better red zone scoring percentage than his opponent (another two grand) or leading at halftime (also $2k). Edsall has pulled in more than $200,000 in bonuses, according to USA Today, while going a robust 6–30 the past three seasons. He also received a $300,000 retention bonus, as if anyone else on the planet had an interest in hiring him away.”

Wow! So is it still the AAC fault or is it the NBE fault now? Or maybe it's a UCONN administration issue. Not trolling anyone but after years of hearing that the AAC is killing UCONN athletes I've never ever heard one voice out of their fans or administration take accountability for running into this wall that they are hitting.

Edsall's deal is dumb, but not exactly for the reason you think. What goes unmentioned whenever the bonuses get brought up is that Edsall's base salary is low for a head coach at that level - something like a flat $1 million. When you add up all the bonuses over a given year I think he still made below-average for an AAC coach. Apparently the idea was to pay a low salary and have an aggressive bonus structure for "success", but by loading up the contract with a bunch of small gimmicky bonuses it gives people with an ax to grind ammo (Forde's kids are college swimmers, UConn cut men's swimming, and he's been making a thing out of it. There's no new information or insight in the article).

At the end of the day it is what it is. It's clear Villanova played it right in the late-90s when they decided against a move-up and then again in the early 2010s when they split from the CUSA call-ups and focused on basketball.

UConn still won 7 national championships between the two basketball programs in the 2010s, which is where the school makes its name, and they'll be back to the Big East in about a week. Football will either figure it out or they won't, but basketball's driving the bus again.

Are you kidding? Multiple UConn fans posting on this board have blamed some of this on the UConn admin, Kevin O., Husky fans for lack of support, etc. These specific fans are classy and honest, and they don't blame the AAC. Now some other UConn fans do, true. But your blanket statement is false.

RE: SI Absolutely Eviscerates UConn Athletics
I've never been one to waste much effort defending UConn athletics, but this article strikes me as Johnny-come-Lately "piling on" by a sportswriter fishing around to write about something during a time of little actual sports to write about.

The hook he tries to use to make the article seem relevant is the rumor that UConn is going to cut a lot of sports. But so what? Many, many schools are considering cutting sports. Nothing unusual about that at all at this time.

As for the rest of it, he brings zero new to the table. We all know how UConn football tanked the past 10 years, and why - profligate deficit spending, bad leadership and coaching, and the bad luck of falling from the ranks of the AQ to G5 conference.

Nothing new to see here, folks .... 07-coffee3

The school had 24 sports? Why does anyone really need that many?

And anyone using common sense would say “why subsidize that many sports with no upside?”

Except Pat Forde and him being butthurt because 5 people watch his kid’s swim meets.

Sports Illustrated hasn't been "the same" in over 30 years, since ESPN broke its monopoly on national sports coverage in the late 1980s.

When I was growing up in the 1970s, Sports Illustrated was The Word in national sports coverage. Back then, you had three basic sources of sports information - two of which were your sportscasters on your local TV stations, and your sportswriters in your city paper. These two groups necessarily focused on the local teams. Sports Illustrated was the only national outlet**, and it dominated. Every Thursday, me and my brothers would eagerly await its arrival in our mailbox, excited to see who was on the cover and what the main stories were about. SI didn't just "cover" the big sporting events, it *defined* them. What it put on its cover and wrote about became what was important in our world, and at countless watercoolers, in terms of sporting news. E.g., in the mid-1970s, when tennis stars like Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert staring making the cover, that was a signal that Tennis was becoming a major sport.

SI also defined how to think about controversies as well. Think the Steelers got away with one on their "Immaculate Reception" play vs the Raiders in the 1972 playoff game? If the SI writer said it was a legit play, then it was a legit play. Think Reggie Jackson committed interference on the base paths in a 1977 WS game vs the Dodgers? If the SI write-up said he did, then it was OK to curse Reggie for his dirty trick. Was Bobby Knight a hopeless arrogant arse-hole or a misunderstood Genius with a bit of temper? SI told us how to think about him. It was like the Supreme Court of sports controversies.

ESPN broke that monopoly forever.

** You also had the on-air opinions of a few national network sports gadflies, the best example of which was Howard Cosell. He counted too.

Both ESPN and Sports Illustrated have fallen in the trap of tearing things down in order to get views and subscribers as opposed to building things up. I don't know when American business started doing this, but it is no long term recipe for success.

Disney may one day turn ESPN into an online streaming service, but the talking head portion of their programming is already taking a nose dive into the outhouse of life. MSM and newspapers are the same way. Eventually America's self indulgent plunge into negativism will have to turn around and when it does the people won't have time for the brain drain and negative vibes.

I wish UConn well. There is nothing productive in trashing them. It's still a fine school with fine degree programs.

I'm just old enough to remember when being classy and above board was the recipe for success. I don't know why besides the irony they call the drag ass zombie world in which we live, "Woke". It's a sleepwalking unproductive mess.

There was the Sporting News.

Without question, the writing and photography in SI far outclassed the Sporting News (especially since the Sporting News came on newsprint). Compared to SI, the Sporting News was sort of like the New York Daily News looking up at the New York Times. It lacked SI's influence and panache. But it was national.

It's hard to explain to people who weren't around pre-ESPN (and, for that matter, pre-internet), but SI was once the only place to get in depth sports stories beyond what local writers wrote. Hell, those of us of a certain age still remember getting up in the morning and not knowing who won any games that ended after midnight on the east coast. Those games appeared in the paper as just "late." There were no highlights (other than for 2 minutes on the 11 pm news).

Things began to change with The National, a sports daily newspaper. And it's been nonstop change ever since, Now, if I want to see a highlight, I don't even have to wait for ESPN, I can find it online in a dozen places.

Man, SI back in the day was awesome. Faces in the Crowd, the best pictures of the action... now it's just a sh!tshow...

RE: SI Absolutely Eviscerates UConn Athletics
I think this article is a little unfair. They made arrangements to move up when they thought that their football team was going to be in a conference with BC, Pitt, Cuse, Rutgers, WVU, VT, and Miami.

3 of those schools bailed but the money for a new stadium was already spent so they soldiered on.

Less than a decade later, that arrangement fell apart too and they essentially lost a coin flip for a spot in the ACC to Louisville. No one would be shaming the UConn athletics dept had the ACC picked them for the last spot. There was not a whole lot the UConn could have done to prevent those 7 schools from leaving the Big East.

Their fan base has always had a basketball first mentality and the administration felt pressure to return to their old familiar basketball foes.
