Maybe JMU and GMU should think about changing their names.

University of Northwest VA
University of Northern VA

Maybe they can increase their national profile.

Williamsburg Yorktown Daily has an article on our Jefferson statute being vandalized in the past couple days and the headline says they attempted to remove the statute.
I don't subscribe. Does anyone have more info on this?

From the Flat Hat:

College spokeswoman Suzanne Clavet also confirmed that the College had hired security contractors to protect the statue following two alleged vandalism attempts within the past two weeks, mirroring similar attempts to remove monuments and memorials across Virginia and the country.

“In the last two weeks, there have been two incidents involving attempted vandalism to the Thomas Jefferson statue – one where a water-based, paint-like substance was sprayed on the statue and another where intent was to pull down the statue,” Clavet said in an email.

Well, they suck at standing security post. Put up a few trail cameras and motion-sensored lights. W&M PD must have a 24-hour command post to monitor cctv and dispatch calls. I mean, this isn't rocket science.

If they don't want the statue, petition the school to remove it. Heck, throw a blanket over it. Or, don't walk near the statue. Ask yourself why you're suddenly triggered to the point that going to jail or getting expelled is worth it.

Thank goodness we now have a billion dollars to pay for extra security.

I never understood why they stuck Jefferson in such a remote location. His criticisms of William and Mary don't upset me.

I doubt anyone will touch Monroe due to the size and fully exposed location of
his statute.

When the Monroe statute went up, I always thought they should put Jefferson
directly across from him and mounted on a pedestal to balance the aesthetics.

I guess it's too late for that approach.

First statutes and now homes.

From the WYD:

William & Mary students frustrated with portion of budget spent on James Monroe’s Highland
A new student petition has surfaced at William & Mary protesting the funding of a plantation formerly owned by James Monroe, fifth president of the United States.

--------
The VA Gazette editor told me they will eventually get around to writing a comprehensive article on all of these happenings.

If you actually read the petition (linked below), the students do not appear to be objecting to its use as a historical museum, but to WM funding (to the tune of half a million a year!) a for-profit venture that sanitizes history by operating as a wedding and event venue (and apparently loses massive amounts of money doing so). Their objection seems to be based on the fact that it does not adequately teach the full and complete history of what occurred there and largely glosses over its role as a slave labor plantation.

This seems to be an eminently reasonable objection, particularly if it is being funded by student fees. Indeed it's the plantation itself that seems to be erasing history, rather than these students.

I think it also loses money, so it seems kinda dumb to me to fund a for profit wedding venue that keeps losing money.

This is a VERY poorly researched petition.

From Highlands website,

full page dedicated to slaving history:
https://highland.org/highland-and-slavery/

Application for TWO research fellows to study slavery etc (Lemon-project related)
https://asalh.org/william-mary-seeks-two...land-char/

WP article from last summer re studying racism at Highland
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/edu...story.html

Also, WM "ownership" is a recent development. It was deeded to the school. Is it "losing money" because the school has been investing into restoration and developing the property as well as the archeological digs going on there? Should one be required to hear a long story about slavery simply because youre having a wedding there? You could argue the same for having a wedding anywhere in the south. Im guessing WM is hoping that one day it will be at minimum a revenue-neutral add to the university.

I'm pretty sure Highland is part of the research, learning and teaching part of W&M.
This sort of asset should be owned by a great university like W&M as part of education and preservation. Earning some money on the side to help cover costs is probably a good thing. Professors in my neighborhood have visited and taken their students.
Professors and students are also involved in excavations and interpreting the new discoveries. Learning is not so much about textbooks.

Here's the college perspective:

This stuck out: "Does William and Mary actually care about its Black students? Or any of their students? Because it is very hard to see when over half the buildings on campus are named after slave owners..."

This first part is inflammatory trolling and is precisely the thing that makes me disrespect most petitions. Aside from that, is it true that over half of our buildings on campus are named after slave owners? If so, even more reason to wash building names and have the holistic committee come up with deserving options.

So what if Highland loses money. Is it a historical and educational resource that's worth owning by the university?

Colonial Williamsburg loses money every year. Ticket and merchandise sales do not come near to cover the expenses. Should the Foundation begin to sell off the buildings? Should the city end all financial subsidies to CW? Wmbg/JCC taxpayers subsidize CW. Education is not a profitable business but it's probably worth the financial deficits.

I think the argument is it's owned and paid for the University, but it's not being used as an educational operation for current WM students. It's located in Charlottesville, and most WM students (myself included, and I did both undergrad and grad school at WM) have no idea it existed or was owned by WM.

If the school is going to fund - and lose money on - an educational resource, at least have it be one the students are actually using.

Sell it to UVA or Liberty, unless there's some clause that W&M must retain it & in its original form. Use that money to pay for renaming buildings.

Ash Lawn-Highland was sold for the last time in 1930 to philanthropist Jay Winston Johns of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Johns family soon after opened the house to public tours and upon his death in 1974, Johns willed the property to James Monroe's alma mater, the College of William and Mary

Probably, yes? Should you be allowed to get married at Auschwitz without having to experience anything about the horrors that occurred there?

I wonder if there is a distant relation to Coach Matt Johns? I know he hails from Pennsylvania.
