I can see it now. Some rich guy in Mississippi will have a giant Robert E Lee statue in his front yard.
I considered that, but BLM can use the $10k and old Mr. Robert Whiteman would have to stare at that statue every day realizing his money is in Black hands. You don't see the irony in that?

It's the definite one up for the southern biggot. Your neighbor flies the stars and bars? You have a 16ft bronze confederate general.

Take a look at some of names of various HOF inductees. MLB has some real POS sitting in Canton...Cap Anson, Orlando Cepeda, and Ty Cobb.

If the move is to exclude segregationist, [criminals] and bigots, it's only a matter of time before these honors are removed. [Brackets] because we will never hold felonious activity over someone's head the way we do bigotry or racism.

Cooperstown, Tribal, not Canton. Canton is reserved for OJ!!!

Not yet, they need to hire a consulting firm, then another one, then hope for a couple big wig donors to cover the bill.

RE: Tribe & Current Affairs
I've read numerous comments about the Confederate flag on the boards.
Make sure you know the difference between the Confederate Battle Flag and
the Stars and Bars.

The Battle Flag being carried by the privates in battle.

The Stars and Bars being
the official flag of the CSA representing the Confederate government and the political and economic elite of the South. In other words, the ones most connected to slavery.

You can fly the Stars and Bars all day long and nobody knows what it is.

Ok, glad you said something because I just took mine down; neighbors were giving me the stink eye.

William of Orange's statue is on the hit list in Scotland. Not a huge leap for the push to extend here. Now, I don't think it will come to that, but it wouldn't surprise me if an outlier petition popped up.

"Athletic exclusion was manifest in the early 20th century, when the school forced Rutgers to sit out star African-American football player Paul Robeson for a 1916 football game and later forfeited a 1923 game when Washington and Jefferson refused to comply with a similar demand."

Walter Blake and Carl Linwood Smothers became the first African-American students to graduate from Washington and Lee University in 1972.

As of 2014–15, minority students now comprise approximately 16 percent of the undergraduate student body and 24.4 percent of the law school student body. The undergraduate class of 2019 includes 10.5% students of color.

I had considered moving it to OT at one point, but decided against it because A) no one complained and B) the topics relating to the thread, whether we like it or not, definitely spill over to W&M.

So, let's talk.

A new petition circulating now. Hollis Mathis wants Names Changed & Take Down the Statues.

William and Mary: W&M: Change the Names, Take Down the Statues - Sign the Petition! https://t.co/x2PDIGP4qY via @Change

Two days after he released that tweet and it has 3 likes - London Jr, mom, and a self-proclaimed black activist; however, over a 1,000 people signed the petition.

As I stated in the other thread, this is where Carl & Michael should've remained focused.

My thoughts are, a committee made up of students, faculty and other stakeholders should reconsider the names on EVERY building and develop a comprehensive list of individuals who positively impacted W&M.

4 US Presidents, notable chemist, philanthropist, scholars, doctors, lawyers, political figures, inventors, military, historical figures, etc.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...ary_alumni

Give building names a deep cleaning and start over. We don't owe Millington, Blair, Jones, or Ewell a thing (just putting names out there, not suggesting they're on my hit list).

Work groups mission-
The group will codify principles for a) naming and renaming buildings, spaces or structures and b) developing commemorative/explanatory markers throughout campus. Rowe has asked the group to prepare a preliminary outline of such principles in a report to the president, in advance of the August Board of Visitors retreat.

The university took action in 2015 to remove the most visible manifestations and iconography of the Confederacy from campus, including a Confederate plaque that hung in the hallway of the Wren Building and two emblems on the College Mace carried at William & Mary’s signature events. By early August, the working group will review any others and recommend actions to address, rename or contextualize them.

Based on research by the Lemon Project and in consultation with our historically linked Indigenous communities, the working group will prepare a prioritized list of appropriate new names for any buildings the Board may wish to name as they come online for consideration.

The working group will conduct a comprehensive landscape review to identify additional structures that may be perceived as barriers to a welcoming and inclusive environment. A final report is due to the president by the February 2021 Board meeting.

There's little balance (diversity) on the "change the name committee."
How about including one alum from every decade.
And don't choose alums that have connections to W&M insiders and who
would likely rubber stamp anything the insiders decide.

Unfortunately, our Alumni Society is not an independent voice to keep a close eye
on the administration. That's what Alumni Society's are for.

How much do you think W&M could get for the Lord Botetourt statue?

I am ok with any of the random people that things are named after being removed.

I am not ok with the icons of American history being removed. W&M should not be ashamed of educating presidents.

Guess we will see what happens.
