The NCAA has announced the recruiting "dead period" (npi) will be extended to the end of August for all sports...

Speaking of articles that sums up feeling....

America can't act like a team and it might cost us the return of sports

IMO it's a great article and sums up my thoughts. Should read it all, but below is part of it.

Quote:Of course, the world really is a competitive league — but an economic one. In that race, in controlling the novel coronavirus pandemic, we are far behind Asia, where, just to illustrate, Japan and South Korea are playing baseball, and Europe, where elite professional soccer is back in England, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The gap is incredibly embarrassing. If you want to know why, among many more serious American problems, we may have no more Major League Baseball, NFL, NBA or NHL this year, consider Tuesday’s stats. The seven largest countries in the European Union, with a combined population around the same as our 330 million, had about 6 percent as many new coronavirus cases as the United States: 2,074 to 33,730. Texas and California had more than 5,000 new cases each.

In April, the E.U. was just as big a health disaster as America. But the E.U. still operates like a team — one that believes in science and has the discipline to fight together against a pandemic. Now the results are in.

The E.U. is considering banning Americans from going to Europe even after its restrictions on travel lift July 1. For the first time, a continent may be saying: “We don’t want your American tourist dollars. You’re not worth the risk.

This is just my opinion based on the current status.

I don’t see how fall sports will end up being held. We’ve blown it as a country and failed to contain the sickness. It’s late June and we’re having record high days. We refuse to wear masks left and right.

I’d put it at greater than 50% chance we either have a cancelled football season, or a partial one that ends up being cancelled mid-season.

Just look at the fighting on these boards. The US historically has referred to itself as the great melting pot. I would say that is no longer the case. We are a country divided with leadership hell bent on dividing us further. By leadership I mean both parties not anyone specifically.

Clemson now reporting 37 football players testing positive for COVID. Yikes! 04-jawdrop

It is also a bit interesting how certain schools are not releasing these numbers as they point to privacy rules. So, it is likely you may hear of one program like Clemson releasing eye-opening numbers and others reporting zero, though the zero could be due to not releasing that info.

By the end of July I expect to hear of easily over 1,000 US pro/athletes that test positive to covid 19.

This CDC link below indicates something I mentioned weeks ago.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nco...tions.html

Quote:People of any age with the following conditions are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19:

Obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 30 or higher)

My guess is every college football team in the nation has multiple, if not numerous, players that fill that specification. Throw in Covid 19 seems to more harmful to the black population.

NFL? Maybe this fall with some scheduling adjustments and tons of testing/precautions.

What percentage of athletes have family in the "pre-existing condition class". Probably a lot.

So many obstacles.

Too soon for college football.

You bring up some interesting points. Ultimately we will see in these hotbed states the result of increased infection among young people. We will see if they spread it to the elderly and if fatalities continue to drop.

College aged kids aren't always the smartest demographic. A little more info: https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/s...259419001/

"Although nearly one out of every five players on Clemson’s football roster have tested positive for the coronavirus, the university doesn't believe that a recent demonstration organized by members of the team is to blame.

All 120 players on the Tigers’ football roster have been tested, with 23, or 19.2 percent, testing positive as of Thursday.

A total of 315 athletes and athletic department staff members had been tested as of Thursday, with 28 total positive tests – an infection rate of 8.8 percent."

RE: Tracking the return of JMU sports (no discussions of validity of covid pandemic)
I saw something at lunch were they said 80 infected people in Michigan were tracked to one bar. Probably not a surprise to anyone.

No doubt the young are spreading it like mad.

This will be a issue more so for athletes, but also the student body. I know, "just shelter the 33% of the population that is either elderly or has with pre-existing conditions". If those football players with high BMI don't concern anyone, what about the professors and college coaches that are in the 33% of the population.

If things stay exactly as they are I'm sure there would still be college football in the future. I just can't see how games can be played in September. If I had to pull out my crystal ball I would say an abbreviated schedule in the spring for football has the best chance.

The first known MLB player to opt out of the condensed 2020 season on the horizon... https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/12...3008309249

I am sure this guy is going to take a lot of grief for his decision, but considering all the unknowns along with this virus not "dying out" as some have projected (we've all "desired" it to die out) I respect his decision, along with anybody else given the option. I can't say that I agree he be paid. I don't know that he will or whether MLB has guaranteed contracts or some percentage of their contracts whether they play or not. Not saying he will or won't, just saying I don't know and am too lazy to look up what the MLBPA and owners agreed to, if anything, for those opting out of playing.

I think we'd all agree that the next 3 weeks are very important in terms of pending decisions regarding whether fall sports will take place, schedules to be released (e.g., VolleyDukes), potential changes to existing schedules (football), and so forth.

I expect to see more of these as we dive into July... https://gosoutheast.com/news/2020/6/29/f...celed.aspx

(note, nothing specific to point out about SEMO vs Dayton by any means, just linking it to illustrate the above point...just beginning to scratch the surface of what I expect we'll see much more of in the coming weeks that is)

Ryan Zimmerman, and Joe Ross from the Worlds Series Champion Washington Nationals (I love saying that) also just opted out.

As you said the next 3 weeks will be interesting.

So many challenges/obstacles/hurdles

But still "planning to" so far.

The Dayton/Southeast Missouri State week 1 game is already cancelled. Dayton claims due to Covid, they won't be able to be prepared for their season as early as labor day weekend. I guess they're choosing to go back to practice and off season work outs later than most of the country?

Sports Illustrated article... "Has Morehouse Paved the Way for Other Schools to Cancel Their College Football Season?"... https://www.si.com/college/2020/06/30/mo...oronavirus

Also...

Craig Haley @CraigHaley

MVFC/Pioneer League commish Patty Viverito on the MVFC First & Goal podcast:

“Even if we have an interrupted season or, God forbid, no season, sports isn’t what’s going to make or break our universities right now. It’s enrollment.”

Sports is a big deal of course. Keeping things in perspective to Ms. Viverito's comment, many millions of tuition, fees, room & board, etc., is a MUCH bigger deal.

The part that I find most interesting of this...the commish.

Not only is the commissioner the same for both the Pioneer and the MVFC (which I didn't know), but it is a woman (which I would think is very rare - especially for conferences dedicated to just male sports) - who has been the head of both conferences for decades (MVFC since 1985 and the Pioneer since 1994).

That is just damn impressive!

Semi-off topic for this thread, but there's rumors the Ivy League will announce they're moving their football season to the spring. I wonder what will happen to the handful of OOC opponents they play in FCS. I guess they may cancel them?

I can't imagine there's a less than 11 game season for non-ivy opponents they play and then they pick up a game or two in the spring in the "off season".

If we truly are getting a Vaccine in early 2021 Spring football makes a lot of sense compared to what fall football may look like. No guarantee a vaccine happens but if there is some chance it is probably better than what we are about to try. Though a lot of players may opt out who are going pro. No easy decisions here.

I'd rather see us push seasons to March at the earliest instead of trying to force fall sports that will very likely fail to complete their seasons. You can get some fans in the stands, etc.
