CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
A pod cast that previews the 20-21 season. Shane Metlen the DNR beat writer is a guest. The host talks a little fast which can be slightly annoying but there is some good depth for hoops fans. Also the gambling vantage point is interesting.

Folks are sleeping on JMU 20-21 but I understand why.

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
The Dukes season will hinge on who becomes eligible to play. If the full roster is available like Byington expects, the Dukes should be competitive in the league this year. The big question mark will be team chemistry. It might take a couple of months for these guys to gel. I do believe we will see them improve as a team throughout the season.

Good point, there’s a lot to be sorted out on who will be instantly eligible and who will be sitting the year out. And once that is figured out chemistry will be a big concern, getting so many new faces to learn the coaches system and gel together will obviously take time. What we see in November will be vastly different once the rotation is figured out and shortened when conference play starts up. Excited to see it all come together and see the new digs.

Is that the correct link? I listened through and didn’t hear Shane or the CAA mentioned

Edit: I’m an idiot. It’s episode 392.

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
Yeah I guess there is validity to chemistry especially in the environment we’re in. The last few years you’d think we would have had chemistry based on the relative continuity of the program. That may have just been poor coaching and there are always excuses that can be made- player or two leaves a new assistant coach etc for why the chemistry wasn’t good last year with a lot of returnees but I think in general some of that stuff is overrated and I’m confident that the staff will have chemistry that they are smart about the players on the roster fitting together and with their style and yeah even though there are a lot of new faces that this may be a good thing and more of a blank canvas.

I expect that we will compete right away and I think our record and place in the standings will be vastly improved.

"If" a full season is played, and we have the players we appear to have at this point I think there is a very good chance to see at least 20 wins.

I'd like to see us competitive the first half of the season, and then get on a roll in February and March.

I'll have what he's having!

That said, I think it is far more likely we finish 5th or 6th in the conference and around .500. And that is with the assumption that Matt Lewis comes back and at least two of the transfers is granted a waiver. I don't think they all will.

Random observation I suppose but...

...I'm very impressed with the HC at Elon. If he can get players in there, he will have them in the upper third of the CAA within 2 years - not necessarily next year, but by '21-'22 I think they are on the rise. He's a good'un as they say.

Agreed, Ja'Dun Michael is a super impressive recruit even if the decision revolved around staying home.
I hope the CAA can start upgrading the profile of the course and land some at large bids to the tournament over the next few years.

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
Forgive me, but my expectations for this season are low. I just don't think this year will be the best one to measure how good or bad the Byington era will be. The staff has had and probably will have a fairly low amount of chances to really work with this team. I just don't know if they will have enough time for this team to be a good team this year. Add on to the fact that there are a lot of new faces and time to bond as a team will be less than usual.
There is a positive that could change everything: every other school is dealing with similar adversity in terms of hands on coaching. Perhaps the discrepancy could lead to teams not being as strong as a unit and may commit more mistakes.
If this team can improve more than the usual team in these circumstances, perhaps they have a chance.
My lifelong disappointment with JMU MBB is still alive for 2020 (as 2020 has been a dumpster fire) and wouldn't surprise me if we were under .500 this year. However, if things are somewhat back to normal next year, I expect this team to be really good next year- and that would be my most positive outlook for this team in a long time.

If there is a 2020 21 season JMU will struggle if transfers cannot play. Its all about 2021-22 and beyond.

If there is a season, some transfers will play, it’s just a matter of which ones get waivers for instant eligibility.

Byington talked like two transfers were almost certainly getting the waiver needed to play this coming season and a third was in the works.

You'd think Taylor would qualify (Wyoming transfer), as he's from VA. I thought Byington said Hodge wanted to sit out at one time. Good news, of course, if there's a season, with these three.

Per Mettlen:
Jalen Hodge had told me upon his decision to transfer he didn't plan to apply for a waiver, but that changed at some point as the #JMU roster was settled. Not 100% sure, but sounds like Wyoming transfer/757 product TJ Taylor may sit this season.

This is obviously big but still tough to picture where we will land in the CAA standings. Probably depends on if we get OOC play w/ COVID and all the other factors that make this a weird season but still curious to see what the basketball writers will say.

I fully expect we will be picked near or at the basement of the CAA. Based on previous season's poor record and all the new faces. Not just the staff but the roster. I mean, over half of the roster wasn't with the program last year (though, you can make a case that could be a good thing???).

Having said all that, I doubt HCMB is going to lose any sleep over what the writers say and in fact, he can use it as some additional motivation if we are picked at or near 10th in the CAA. To say we are a huge question mark would be an understatement.

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
What is clear is that the Dukes have more talent then last year. Big upgrade at point guard. Christmas and Wooden are two players that could really change the fortunes of the Dukes. If they take a big leap forward from last year, we are going to contend.

I have always liked Wooden. With the right coaching, his ceiling is high. He has the size to be a dominating power forward. If he could develop a mid range shot and post game, he could dominate the CAA. He has the athleticism already.

With Christmas, it really is all about conditioning. The guy gained a good 15 pounds last year and it wasn’t muscle weight. If stays in shape, he can be the slasher that opens up the three for Lewis and Morse. Wooden and Mensah just need to follow Christmas to the basket for clean up of any missed shots.

There are lots of questions to be answered but this is a pretty good roster for a first year coach. He is not starting with a bare cupboard.
