Sports Illustrated should have followed the newspapers' lead and started putting up a lot of their stories online behind paywall a long time ago. I know it's annoying for us internet posters when companies do that, but those that have done that have survived. Those that have not, well, look where SI is heading.

SI's problems weren't a paywall, it's that the entire Time magazine organization was run into the ground. Today's SI is not much more than Bleacher Report with a better brand and its owners are taking a "harvesting" strategy with the brand.

No, they chose the Big East, who doesn’t sponsor football. It’s not the same kind of decision as BYU or Notre Dame choosing that direction, but more like UMass, who made a decision based on basketball than all of its sports.

And I hope UConn can succeed as an independent. It’s not a jab at their football or as a school. I just don’t think very highly of most school leaders. I don’t believe this school wants FBS football if it can’t be in the ACC or at any major table. Independence kicks the ball down the road a bit, but, I think they are probably talking quite often to Villanova about how to handle the sport when it really wants to promote basketball.

It's not quite like UMass when you consider that the Big East Fox deal pays more than most G5 all sports media rights deals. Also, while it is certainly a basketball driven decision, it's an elite college basketball driven decision to join a league with multiple championship contenders year in and year out. I just think people really need to keep in mind that even with this move, UConn will still be making more in TV money than the vast majority of G5 programs.

Yeah, Big East money is far better than other non-major deals, and it can cover the department better than what UMass can do with A10 money, but it’s still leaving your costliest program unattached without an equivalent media subsidy/revenue stream. The CBS money is okay, and it covers production costs, but indy is still hurting the athletic department’s bottom line. That the department is cutting programs...seems to line up poorly for UConn based on optics. The cuts look like football-related casualties. Then again, I get it, these cuts may have been inevitable even in the AAC.

But, UConn is getting more money due to basketball. I assume that means they’ll be spending more on the sport (men’s and women’s) because of that, too. I don’t think too much is going to be left over to cover for football.

The bottom line to me is that UConn will still earn overall media revenue in line with higher level G5 ADs. Obviously, UConn will need to spend money to keep basketball competitive within the Big East. UConn had 24 programs. That was never going to be sustainable without P5 membership. Further cuts may be required. We'll see. Those are non-revenue sports that most P5 ADs don't sponsor though. The potential upside for FBS football is still worth it.

This has been gone over, exhaustively, ever since UConn announced the move. The truth is the money isn't meaningfully different either way, and with increased ticket sales and donations UConn likely breaks even on an annual basis to a slight degree.

Benedict putting together a full 2020 schedule in about three months in the second half of 2019 should disabuse anyone of the notion they weren't expecting to be an independent. UConn knew full well they were choosing independence when they moved to the Big East.

The ACC made a great decision at the time but if the ACC had taken UConn, I think UConn would have stabilized and improved. In that scenario Louisville, Cincinnati, and West Virginia go to the Big 12 as a package and the Big 12 has actually 12 teams and I could see them a few years later or at the same time just going to 14 to become the Big 14 with Houston and Memphis to help the spread of the conference and to fire back on the SEC territory.

BIG XIV

NORTH
West Virginia
Cincinnati
Louisville
Memphis
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State

SOUTH
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas Tech
TCU
Baylor
Texas
Houston

Would be a great basketball conference as well.

The Big East would just have dropped football at that point and cut USF loose leaving CUSA as what is now the American the best of the rest.

Dude... Cut it out, already. The Big XII has publicly passed on Cincinnati TWICE now. They were never...and WILL NEVER...add Cincinnati... period.

If the ACC took UConn over Louisville then it’s possible that Clemson and FSU bolt to the Big XII as there rumors to that effect about what they’d do if a bad football school was added to replace Maryland. If CU and FSU left the ACC and the some combo of GT/UNC/UVa/VT/Duke/NCSU don’t bolt for the B1G and SEC it’s probable that the ACC would backfill with Louisville and Cincy.

North: BC, UConn, Cuse, Pitt, Louisville, Cincy, Virginia Tech
South: UVa, UNC, Duke, NCSU, Wake, GT, Miami.

This would clearly be below the B1G, SEC and Big XII in football and probably on par with the PAC 12 given its struggles over the last few years. ND would probably consider moving it’s hybrid membership to the Big XII since playing 5-6 games against ACC teams wouldn’t feature the same level of interest or quality.

I do agree with this. But one does wonder how other non-major schools have been able to sustain such large athletic departments, and then there’s football hanging out. And I get it that when you’re bigger than others maybe you look more like your peers, but, again, costly football. It’s not unique to UConn for sure.

+2k on season tickets year-over-year for a season that may not happen isn't half bad.
