They are down to 1400 - 1460 FTEs in Memphis, and I think that counts temps that are employed through agencies at the distribution center. They haven't met their 15 year EDGE tax break commitment. 925 at the pyramid campus, which used to be higher.

I hope they stay here beyond their distribution center, but selling the entire campus and leasing back a portion on a 15 year lease with an easy out clause isn't a good sign.

I would bet a thousand bucks right now that for every medical device job lost in Memphis there's 2-3 new ones being created in N. Miss.

I think the Medical Device Manufacturing industry is still strong. Not sure what would happen if Medtronic moved out completely. They could still maintain contracts with local companies if they chose to.

One of my sons married into a family who founded a Med Device Precision Manufacturing plant. Biggest problem was finding skilled workers. They drive in from as far away as Jackson, TN every day and get all the overtime they can handle. Haven't talked to them lately but last time I did they were functioning at capacity.

Growing jobs in N Miss is good for the whole area. Am I wrong in thinking that most of what's leaving Memphis and moving to N Miss is due to newer more modern distribution warehousing?

While start a company in crime riddled Memphis when you can locate to North MS and still use the Memphis labor?

Doesn't matter about the crime. Which ever state they can operate in with the cheapest taxes will get the business.

No doubt but a big enough company will not be able to recruit top management talent to Memphis.

Why not? They seem to do okay in every other major city with crime.

I thought we just covered that? Include poor education system with unskilled labor. Maybe that's why warehousing has thrived? Just gotta be able to drive a fork lift and not tear too much stuff up.

Its due to the State of Mississippi and Desoto county giving companies anything and everything they want in order to move. Tennessee won't back Memphis like that. Memphis can only use PILOT and half the city loses their mind whenever we do that.

But they bend over backwards for Nashville every time a company came a calling.

No worse than St. Louis. They (St. Louis) just lured a Global 500 company. The Fortune 500 companies already in Memphis appear to be thriving. St. Jude has big plans. Memphis has tons of new construction in the works. Memphis is doing okay. It’s a nice place to live.

It isn't as simple as a single factor. Much of it is due to incentives that the state of Mississippi has supported to help northern Mississippi vs incentives that the state of Tennessee has supported to help Memphis.

Other way around. Creating a logistics warehouse based economy preceded the poor, non-STEM education system. Gave people an excuse not to care about their workers education if they didn't require much for the jobs they were willing to hire for.

Now, we are seeing a shift, but it's been a generational mentality among the business community to treat the ceiling of the potential of the workforce, the potential of the community, as low skilled distribution labor. And policies reflect that the minimum requirement to fill FedEx and trucking jobs was pretty low, and the cost-benefit to their bottom line for filling warehouse jobs with better educated people wasn't great.

Then it became a cycle.

R1 can help begin to change that. Not by itself. That would take all 5 local colleges.

Memphis has three times the Fortune 500 corporations your entire sh*thole state has.

Mississippi has zero Fortune 500 corporations and Tennessee has 10...

Still, Northern MS is in fact growing incredibly fast. Fortune 500 companies only tell part of the story.
