Big, unexpected news
Not directly sports but Gov Lee made sure the U of Memphis got the $32,000,000 needed for the New Engineering STEM Building in this years budget. We’ve already raised over $8,000,00.

This is considered essential to continue the growth in engineering graduates and to earn and maintain R1-Carnegie status.

Memphis and UT Chat were the only capital improvement projects funded.

Back to sports.

This is monster news. Our ability to produce top quality engineering graduates for the local MedTech community will be a big boost for our local economy

https://www.pressreader.com/usa/the-comm...1460878022

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.commerc...3313123002

* Local MedTech Companies: (+$60K starting salaries, new grads)
- Medtronic
- Smith & Nephew
- Microport
- Wright Medical (just acquires by Stryker)
- Onyx
- Numerous suppliers
- Several small biotech firms

**Would definitely like to see a continued, increased investment by local and state groups to position Memphis as a MedTech Device Hub.

R1-Carnegie status has been a goal for some time. Not being R-1 has held us back in a number of areas including sports.

With R-1 status comes more endowments.

Unfortunately Medtronic continues to reduce the number of employees in Memphis. They have sold their office campus and leased back half the space for only 15 years. Not a good sign.

Yep. They have been doing a slow retreat to Minneapolis for many of their BUs over the last 10yrs. This is one company that should be reinvesting in Memphis, and I don't think they have been invested in the community to the degree that they could/should. That being said, they are still a major employer.

They have been shifting to a heavy work from home model for a while now which is why their office here has been reduced in size. They still employ over 2,000 in Memphis I believe

They are down to 1400 - 1460 FTEs in Memphis, and I think that counts temps that are employed through agencies at the distribution center. They haven't met their 15 year EDGE tax break commitment. 925 at the pyramid campus, which used to be higher.

I hope they stay here beyond their distribution center, but selling the entire campus and leasing back a portion on a 15 year lease with an easy out clause isn't a good sign.

Back to the OP, this is very unexpected & good news considering what we have been hearing from the gov over the last couple of months. Don't know how it was accomplished but someone deserves a lot of credit.

I would bet a thousand bucks right now that for every medical device job lost in Memphis there's 2-3 new ones being created in N. Miss.

First STEM is a key economic growth engine that aligns with K-16 initiatives.

Second, the U of M generally surpasses minimum expectations for cost sharing in capital projects so we move up the rankings faster.

Third, ( I think) This isn't general funds or even traditional capitol expenditures. They are floating bonds specific to our project and the Adv Manufacturing Project in Chattanooga. It had to be a legislative action. Not 100% on my comments here but from what I read this is how I interpret it.

The first money is planning, design and pre-ground breaking dollars. Estimated ground breaking is 18 months from now.

I think the location is the corner of Zach Curlin and Central behind the Herff building.

Hernando has a growing medical device company on 51 south of the square.

I think the Medical Device Manufacturing industry is still strong. Not sure what would happen if Medtronic moved out completely. They could still maintain contracts with local companies if they chose to.

One of my sons married into a family who founded a Med Device Precision Manufacturing plant. Biggest problem was finding skilled workers. They drive in from as far away as Jackson, TN every day and get all the overtime they can handle. Haven't talked to them lately but last time I did they were functioning at capacity.

Growing jobs in N Miss is good for the whole area. Am I wrong in thinking that most of what's leaving Memphis and moving to N Miss is due to newer more modern distribution warehousing?

Its due to the State of Mississippi and Desoto county giving companies anything and everything they want in order to move. Tennessee won't back Memphis like that. Memphis can only use PILOT and half the city loses their mind whenever we do that.

While start a company in crime riddled Memphis when you can locate to North MS and still use the Memphis labor?
