Agree. My first thought was a chimney swift (a type of bird):



Any logo that requires a great deal of effort to see the intended meaning -- "What? You're telling me that's a 'C'??" -- is not a good logo.

The C and pickax are both obvious to me, but people perceive things differently and obviously a lot of people don't see it. Maybe their test audience was made up of people with perception like mine, or at least enough of them (or loud enough ones) that the others didn't disagree with them?

I think it's fine. It's always important to settle on your standardized color (when I was at Tech we were awful about this, just about any shade of blue might show up - and for that matter any old map of Louisiana with any old "T" slapped on top would show up as a logo). For whatever he was as a coach, Derick Dooley as an AD at least cleaned that stuff up.

I've been tempted many times to buy a Charlotte t-shirt for my daughter (whose name is Charlotte), but I'd be looking for less clear 49er branding, not more clear. Good luck on the re-brand.

I had my doubts about bringing Charlotte back into the conference (UNCC), but I have to admit, that buildup and that announcement was the most "C-USA thing" I've seen in a while. You should get a lifetime membership for that effort. Impressive.
