Any of them hospitalized? I bet a lot of football players got the flu as well. The irrationality around this virus is crazy. It is a danger for some people. College athletes are not among them.

Thankfully, those players (and those at other schools as well) do not need coaching, training, meals, physical therapy, counseling, education, tutoring or family contact. They are a fully-functional, self-contained unit of 18-22 yo that exists in a stasis of non-compromised perfect health solely for the entertainment of mainly old white fans.
Are they training in nursing homes? You know how these kids are more likely to get COVID than playing and practicing football? Partying, which you aren't going to stop a bunch of college kids from doing.

So it’s okay for them to have their health at risk for football? Got it.

Perhaps you should educate yourself on what Covid 19 does to lung capacity.

I honestly think the only way you will take this virus seriously is if your wife (or husband; I don’t judge), your kids, or your parents test positive and die.

THEIR HEALTH IS NOT AT RISK. Do some research. There is basically no elevated risk for people under 25, some in that age group are at less risk than they are from the flu. Stop trying to scare everyone with fake news and overreactions. You would have us believe that the black plague is out there and anyone who comes in contact with other people is probably going to die. The reality is that we are dealing with a virus that is about twice as deadly as the flu, and if you aren't in a nursing it is less than that.

As Grommet sarcastically and aptly noted:
(06-20-2020 02:15 PM)Grommet Wrote:  Thankfully, those players (and those at other schools as well) do not need coaching, training, meals, physical therapy, counseling, education, tutoring or family contact. So once the disease has rapidly spread through the players, they in turn can and will spread it through more vulnerable populations.
And BTW, even though the death rate among 20 year olds is only slightly higher (but it IS higher) than that of H1N1, lung damage may be permanent even with healthy athletes, as Justanodufan noted.

Do we really want to risk all of that so a few can watch a football game? 01-wingedeagle

Maybe you should do research.

Covid-19 can destroy up to 30% of lung capacity. But I guess that’s okay to you, because those young men’s health doesn’t really matter to you.

RE: What if????
It no longer has anything whatsoever to do with controlling the spread of the disease. That went out the window completely with the recent riots (or the "mostly peaceful" protests, if you prefer the sanitized description).

Our power-besotted leaders -- federal, state and local, corporate, academic, and charitable, they all have a hand in this -- can shut down our schools, close our libraries, cancel our organized sports, demolish our service industries, close our courts, defund our police, and generally ruin our lives. But they cannot enforce social distancing.

We are human beings, not ants. We will congregate at the beach, paint graffiti on confederate monuments, play ultimate frisbee in City Park, set up impromptu exercise equipment for general usage at the corner of Delaware and Llywellen Avenues, jam six kids on a small motor boat on the Lafayette River, rollerblade around the neighborhood in a group of roughly a dozen completely uncoordinated adults, and so on -- just to name a few of the things that I personally witnessed this past week.

For all their pathetic attempts at scolding us, none of Mayor Alexander, Governor Northam or President Trump have the ability to stop the Norfolk citizenry from acting like actual people. And, as a consequence, the Wuhan Virus will spread. That is a given.

The only question for each of us to ask ourselves when this experiment in social control finally and inevitably fails is -- did I act like a human or like an ant?

RE: What if????
I am going to put this as simply as I can because at the end of it all we may not have football for the same reason Virginia schools will probably not fully open in the fall; liability.

No one wants to take on the liability because all it takes is one nut with an attention seeking attorney for it all to go to sideways. You can debate whether 18-22 year old seemingly healthy men are at more or less risk for contracting the virus all you want. That will not play into the decision at all.

Personally, if it were my kid, I would not want my kid put a risk for contracting this virus which they may then pass onto those with a more vulnerable immune system simply because you miss sports. Of all the selfish things I have heard on this board, this probably tops the list. Some of y'all need to remember what the hell empathy for others means.

The more I thought about this, the more ridiculous this statement is to me. If we’re being honest, if the health of these young men was truly that important to you, you’d never want football to return at any level. These young men are in much greater risk of long term health problems due to head injuries than they are at risk of coronavirus complications.

But, of course no one on here is making that argument, because we understand there is a trade off and that these young men and their families are making the decision to play the sport, knowing the risk. Why should this virus be any different?

Because a head injury is not transmittable. Obviously covid-19 is.

For these players, head injuries are a real health risk. Obviously, covid-19 isn't.

If your primary concern is the health and safety of college football players, there is NO WAY this virus is a bigger threat to the players than CTE.

RE: What if????
Not sure I agree with this. If you're playing the odds, I think Covid, this season, has a far greater chance of being harmful than CTE. Granted the odds of covid being immediately harmful as in fatal are slim, but I'd bet the odds are just as high if not higher than the odds of having a serious head injury.

Clearly, the comparison is not perfectly aligned. But the differences, in my view, do not support the cancel-the-season proponents.

If there is no 2020 football season, the players will not sustain a football-related injury (short of some back-yard freak accident).

If there is no 2020 football season, the players (and those they come in contact with) are still going to become exposed to the coronavirus. Perhaps even more so, since they will no longer be in a semi-controlled environment and our benevolent masters are not capable to putting our players (or pretty much anyone else) in bubble wrap.

Nailed it. They are at a monumentally higher risk for long term health problems from the sport itself than they are from COVID.

You seriously believe these kids aren't out partying? It is not like the Navy, where you quarantine everyone for 14 days and then put them directly on the boat with no outside interactions.
