That makes sense. However, I see no reason you couldn't sit in the privacy of your own home wearing a beer mask/hat (BMH will be its commercial designation).

I see people driving in cars by themselves wearing masks. I believe they are motivated by the cosmetic improvement, though.

I also love the "JMU to FBS" idea!

I'd imagine that's just a matter of leaving it on in between places instead of touching their mask/face all the time.

As for your beer mask invention, it made me think of this video although this guy is smoking rather than drinking 03-lmfao

Why didn't he just use a gas mask, a la Laremy Tunsil?

For those who can't make it, it looks like they post these on the JMUSports.com page. At least I see Coach Byington's on there.

Since it's "happy hour" I think it would only be fitting if Bourne showed up with Alger stone cold drunk. 03-drunk

That's Alger on the right with the nice cap and cool sunglasses. 03-cool

I registered but forgot about it since I was eating dinner. I heard Bourne have some revealing responses that may indicate a direction for JMU. Hopefully they post the replay like they have been doing with the other Happy Hours. I was planning to ask him about a new regional conference.

RE: Duke Club Happy Hour series
The replay will be posted on the Duke Club's facebook page by early next week.

Pretty good session. JB was very open about questions asked of him. Couple of WAY watered down items:
Q: Will there be sports (covid)? A: all sports planning to play a full normal schedule (he was very optimistic here)
Q: What's your position on FLO? A: The league voted 9-1 and I was the lone dissenting vote. JMU had a better product than what FLO was offering (Credit Curt Dudley & team) and we were doing it for free. Very open about that question.
Q: What's the future of facility construction? A: All construction on hold for 2 years and then hope to get back into projects that were on the slate pre-covid, including Old convo renovation, Field Hockey stadium, Sentara park project [the one with the anonymous gift announced last fall], Softball expansion, Tennis project (I wrote these down at home but trying to remember his list off the top of my head).
Q: Will JMU remove any sports to remedy budgets? A: NO! Emphatic support for fully funding all programs that we have; that we are in a good position right now (better than most institutions) to weather the storm
Q: Conference realignment to regionalize stuff? A: He won't mention any names but there is a lot of buzz about this. He did name CUSA and SB as two conferences who are having discussions. Schools are not getting the revenue they expected and something will have to change.

Thanks, Deez. When the replay is posted if someone can post a link it would be greatly appreciated.

A few thoughts...

1. I had heard before that JMU/JB was the dissenting vote on FLO. Perhaps just me, but I really wish we would/could forge a relationship with ESPN and get the CAA's events via the ESPN+ platform. For $4.99 subscription a month (very economical), the worldwide leader behind us (read: best foundation), etc., it just seems like the CAA and our commish, Eddie Munster, is spinning wheels in the mud trying all these other platforms instead of doing what to me at least seems fairly obvious where we should be.

2. Glad to read we are emphatically NOT considering any reductions or avoiding fully funding our programs across the board. The bean counter(s) take a blasting on this board - perhaps some warranted, perhaps some not - but when a statement can be made like this and especially considering what we are seeing across the nation with other programs, those guys deserve some appreciation and respect (IMO).

3. "Schools are not getting the revenue they expected and something will have to change." Saw this coming a zillion miles away many years ago (and posted so on this board). No surprise whatsoever. There's the P5 and everybody else. Some egos are going to have to get severely bruised and it may take some programs (in the AAC mostly) a decade or more to finally realize they are not in and they are NEVER going to be in the P5 country club. Never forget, the P5 runs college football. The NCAA runs everything else. Though, with its continual looking-the-other-way when it comes to blue bloods like Duke, UNCheat, Kansas, and so forth blatantly cheating in MBB, it is possible the P5 is now running that sport too.

RE: Duke Club Happy Hour series
With regards to the bruising of egos, it would seem that the pandemic should be the perfect cover for ADs and Presidents regionalizing leagues. I'm sure folks are already using this as an excuse to cancel plans, trips, not meeting up with that one annoying friend we all can't stand for more than a half hour at a time, etc. Add in that some of the schools that would benefit most are the ones that are cutting sports, and it seems a no brainer.

That said, it doesn't seem like "having a brain" is a pre-requisite for working in athletic departments or NCAA.

OK, for starters, regarding the bolded above, there's no need to bring me into the conversation. Rimshot

Not directed at you, but I believe sometimes folks think it is as simple as demanding you add College X into Conference Y. It isn't that easy. It requires an invitation. You don't just sign up. I agree with your premise that perhaps reshuffling among the G5 and upper echelon of D1AA could be on the horizon because of financial strife caused by COVID. Then again, I don't see it happening anytime soon - certainly not until 2021 - because administrators are just trying to live for today right now...and, rightfully so. i.e., they have a ton of other items on their plates at the moment...like, do fall sports go forward, do you furlough employees, etc.

If they are not talking and working on it right now, it won't happen in 2021

Agree. It likely will take a lot of red ink on the balance sheet and a bottoming out (which may not be fully realized until 2021) before actions are kinda forced.

There's been a lot of folks waiting on the college athletics spending bubble to eventually burst. Obviously, nobody expected it to happen this way. It may take 2 to 3 years before the collegiate athletics' financial fires finish smoldering. Hopefully not of course. Certainly, during 2021 there should be some meaningful discussions and thought processes thrown around at "what are we really trying to accomplish here" and "can we survive financially with what we are currently doing"? I think JMU is in a position of strength in the future as an attractive addition to any reshuffled or newly configured conference up and down the east coast, but particularly in the mid-atlantic of course.

The odds are always against one specific time of leagues re-organizing, but that said there has not been a more likely time. I'd say the chances of JMU having a formalized plan of moving in the next 2 years would be not better than 1 in 3. I'd compare that to pre-pandemic it would likely be 1 in 10 in the next two years.

And yes, I know there is a lot of background negotiating and deal making that needs to happen before a school joins a conference normally; reorganizing and "trading" member institutions would be even more complicated and frustrating. My point, as others have made as well, is that the time for those conversations to be happening is now. You are right schools need to do what they can to make it through 2020-21, but they must also be thinking about the long term future of their school and programs. I don't think we will see or hear an announcement before the June 30th deadline for conference moves. But the conversation must not die on July 1; right now it's Covid causing problems. But what about the next recession, shifting moods around streaming vs linear TV, the general apathy when the opponent is not a rival or a big name? They all can (and should, imo) lead to a reorg, especially given the politically safe excuse of Covid Crisis compared to the politically fraught "our fans/students don't give a rat's @$$ about School X"

I, of course, agree with you. I don't think things will die down on July 1st. If anything, I think there will be more discussion for a G5 reshuffle as the year progresses (especially if finances take an even bigger hit than is projected). I think before COVID some, maybe many, schools whether they admitted it or not were already starting to feel the "this isn't what we thought it would be". Don't worry about what chest-thumping fonts on fanboy message boards say. I'm talking about the folks who have to make and meet budgets. More and more red ink should force G5's to look around and see where their costs are, what benefit they are (or are not) getting from dwindling TV contracts and flying across time zones, etc. I do like the fact that Bourne tends to work behind the scenes. Trying to play your cards out in the public/media isn't smart at all.

RE: Duke Club Happy Hour series
I think the whole landscape of NCAA was on the verge of a total do-over anyway, especially with football, and then this pandemic really amplified that need. FBS might have P5 and G5 but the haves and have nots are far worse than that. There’s a smaller group of P5 that are elite and nobody else can consistently get in there. Schools like Ohio State are on that outer bubble and the difference between them and other competitive Big10 schools is big, then the difference between those schools and G5 is humongous. They only want those G5 schools around for warmup games and won’t take them seriously. Schools that rely on those guaranteed payday games to fund their athletic departments is what keeps them going, but the reality is they have little to no chance of getting in the college football playoffs.
