I was lobbying for AA during Pastner's era. Tone was a coach on the floor under Calipari so I believe he'd make a great addition. He would bring toughness to any Tiger team.

One of the best lock down defenders to ever play here.

But if he doesn't have a 5* player in tow he needs to work his way up to that spot.

If I was going to get a former player to be an assistant coach from that era it would be Preston Laird

I thought Preston had a HC gig.

Without a doubt. And a winner. He, Dozier and McGrady in more wins than any Division 1 players in history. Of course some were vacated.

Are you going on record as saying you think hiring Penny as HC was / is a bad decision?

I said it before he was hired and been very consistent with that opinion. But honestly, I hope I'm wrong. Penny failing would be horrible on many levels, for the program and the city.

If you attended any games (in Memphis) from 2014 through 2018, and then attended games the last two years with Penny coaching, you will recognize that hiring Penny was a good decision.

Can't argue that. Definitely a bump in attendance and donations. On that point you are correct. However, if things don't improve on the court over the next year or two, it's not going to be pretty. Josh and Tubby failing and losing the fan base is one thing. This is a whole 'nuther animal if things don't go the way the fans want. Perhaps some aren't old enough to remember what happened to Larry and how bad that ended...? This has the potential to be much worse, especially in the social media age.

To be honest - I like the roll of the dice with Penny. It was a very nothing ventured nothing gained move by the university. I agree, this could end terribly but we were at a point after the later years with Josh and two comatose years with Tubby that the admin had to do something drastic. I also liked the idea that Penny didn't "need" the job given his status but seemed to be here for the university and to prove his coaching abilities.

All that said it still can go the way of Larry, which would be terribly tragic. I just think given the circumstances of the prior regimes there were very little options to choose from. Realistically, what other coaches would have come after the admin cut Tubby loose after two years and keeping him would have had an even deeper cut on attendance.

Valid points. Can't really argue with much of what you said.

We'll see. Fingers crossed.

02-13-banana Keep those fingers crossed and if what goes around comes around then we will be in excellent shape. Our football tigers gave Penn State all they could handle even after losing our head coach and also injured key players for the game and our basketball tigers problem with our number one recruit and injured players.
Just imagine what we can do with a full healthy team and seasoned coaches still aboard. The stars are in alignment and the TIGERS are destined for great things.

On the most incredible teams ever over that whole NC run, Tone was my favorite. Always composed. Unselfish player. A real leader. He truly embodied that Tiger swagger and he had ice in his veins. I would love to see him coach here.

Is Penny still conducting interviews or did they make a hire? Why have they not announced yet?

A good guess is that they haven’t announced because they haven’t made a hire.

Hiring Penny was not drastic.

Honestly, why hire someone now? Anyone we can hire now, we can hire later. We don't know if we'll have a season. No need to add to the payroll at a time when we're unsure if we'll generate revenue. And recruiting trips were just changed from 3 Coaches permitted. Now only 2 Coaches may travel.

If Penny has serious PR skills....and we know he does.....he could make a handshake agreement with a young up-and-comer for future contract based on getting to work now.

I don't expect to hear anything for a while. I picture Laird Veatch walking around with a calculator in his hands at all times. This is a difficult year to make the budget work.

All the more reason we need to raise the level of our OOC football schedules - revenue.
