Not talking about mascots but the actual names Yale, Stanford and Harvard.

I don't get why the owner is so recalcitrant to change. At the least, a new logo and perhaps color scheme would mean merch $$$. Do Redskins fans really need to see a dark-skinned Native American head on a red helmet to cheer their team to another losing season? Can they not do that for the Washington Independence or Washington Swamp Monsters or the D.C. Dream Crushers?

This is the reason Snyder isn't changing the name of the franchise.

Think how much new paraphenalia he could sell!

And I would think a slightly different color scheme would sell better. Rockets switched from the Red and Gold of their back to back championships to their blue pajama unis to try to sell more merchandise.

The 'skins are beloved. Remember the Charlotte Bobcats? Yeah- fans like Hornets. If Nashville would give the Oilers name back to Houston, Houston fans would accept it.

The Redskins are the 14th most valuable athletic franchise in the world. Despite the horrible football Snyder throws on the field, the Washington franchise will have to be forced to change their name. The leadership will not choose a risky move that may impact the franchise value.

I don't see Chicago Blackhawks changing anytime soon either.

Chiefs just won a Super Bowl so they're probably good for at least a couple years.

The Chiefs have used only the arrowhead logo since the early 70's. They will be fine.

The Blackhawks are one of the more iconic brands in the NHL. People usually don't consider it offensive because it doesn't overtly resemble a negative stereotype like Chief Wahoo, nor does it have a potentially derogatory name like Redskins. The team itself took their name from an WWI Infantry Division, which was named after the Sauk tribe leader Black Hawk.

They could be the UNLV SJWS. UNLV on one side of helmet, SJWS on other side.

It was always a weird name for them.

Maybe they could use some Italian slur since the mob made Las Vegas. And they are tearing down Columbus. Hey, Notre Dame is the "Fighting Irish."

The Fighting Irish name arose out of pride for the Irish Brigade's heroics in the Civil War.

The Irish Brigade's chaplain, Father Corby, has a statue at Gettysburg and later became ND's president.

Besides, most Irish-Americans do not object to the name, quite the contrary. It is a source of pride, not a slur.

Try again.

We are not a homogeneous people. I’m as Irish as the Blarney Stone and we are very proud of our heritage. I’ve been back there five times. It means a lot to us.

However, my family has never taken any pride whatsoever in the Fighting Irish logo. Now, I must say that we also don’t take umbrage to it either, but we have definitely never seen it as an integral part of our proud heritage. It’s just the athletics logo for some school in Indiana.

RE: UNLV eyes mascot name change
I think UNLV should definitely at the very least change it’s iconography — that’s a complete no-brainer, IMHO.

The folks decrying the problematic relationship between the school and the Confederacy aren’t imagining it, they’re literally pointing to a copious amount of historical evidence.

Even if it is a frontiersman, is that really any better? They slaughtered millions upon millions of Native Americans to steal their land. Are we reduced to choosing between the least objectionable chapters of our sordid past?

Why should we do that? Seriously, why would anyone intentionally choose to go down that path?

That’s just idiotic. Also, who cares if it was acceptable in 1982, but not now? Times change, people and cultures evolve. That’s not always a good thing but in this case it’s an excellent development.

I think they should just pick Sharks and be done with it.

All frontiersmen slaughtered Native Americans? Never knew that, thanks for your historical perspective. I agree they need to can it because most morons don’t know the difference between that an a Confederate soldier. They probably think civil war battles were fought in Las Vegas.

Sharks is definitely one of the most idiotic names being thrown around here. UNLV ran him out of town under the NCAA’s forceful hand, and now they are going to praise him? Didn’t they already name the court after the guy? Let’s change Indiana to the Knights. Up, wait. I once read knights killed some people so yikes, let’s not go down that road. Holy Cross, you’re on the clock.

It's too easy to offend someone by picking a human-based mascot. Knights? Too white and besides they attacked Muslims 1000 years ago, so problematic. Pioneers? Didn't you know that was Native land? Too problematic. I know, if naming the mascot after people that took land from natives is honoring them and therefore bad, then let's honor the natives inst... oh wait.
Birds and block letters for everyone. Any nail that sticks up must be hammered down.

No, of course not all frontiersman killed Native Americans. Similarly, not all Confederate soldiers killed American soldiers. Hell, not all Southerners owned slaves or even believed in slavery. However, enough of those incidents did in fact happen to make it an exceedingly strange cause to champion in 2020.

Look, times change and attitudes change too. The mood around this issue has been gradually shifting in most parts of our country for decades and it has now apparently reached a crescendo. From my perspective, that’s a genuinely wonderful development, but I also understand why some others might disagree.

Also, it’s perfectly natural that some people are going to be inclined to resist any change for any number of reasons. We should respect those folks but we should also keep marching forward.

However, just yourself this: If you are UNLV, why would you fight this issue so hard just to be on the losing side of history? To preserve your tradition?

LOL!

OK.

Why?

Just choose Sharks and put a towel in his mouth and call it a day. That would be the most rebellious thing they could possibly do here without having to fight an uphill battle that is only getting steeper and steeper with each passing year.

Frontiersmen had better relationships with Native Americans. Marrying Native Americans, working together, etc. A frontiersman could easily be depicted as a trapper or the like, which lived outside of US society at the time. I think it’s such a generic term to pick and say they slaughtered millions and millions, which isn’t true. Cavalry would be more problematic. Even Settlers, or hell, Sooners.

The only cause to champion is not bending at the whim of misinformed people. People are discovering if they cry and ***** about something enough, they get their way. Unfortunately, this might be a product of the way my generation and the one following were raised.

The mascot is being retired, fine. The moniker Rebels on the other hand is not a racist term, nor was it originally conceived to be that way. In the article I shared, students eventually created the mascot with the Confederate ties. It was removed in the 70’s, recreated in the 80’s, and now it is being addressed...again.

I loved Tark and the Rebels, they were Rebels to the established basketball powers. They even wore Rebels (changed from UNLV) on their road uniforms on purpose so teams would know this.

They aren’t elite anymore, so retiring the name might be a good idea in that sense. Runnin’ Sharks should be the moniker to add to the absurdity. Hell, it might be on the ocean in the future anyway.

Also, I well know that there will there will be some people who will vehemently and disingenuously insist that UNLV’s rebel has nothing to do with the American Civil War. However, that claim is belied by their actual history, of which we have plenty of archival evidence.

The people demanding the change aren’t reaching for anything except the school’s past. Is it the current administration’s/fans’/players’ fault that the school used to have a mascot named Beauregard and put a confederate flag on their helmet?

No, absolutely not.

However, are opponents wrong to suggest that the two are inextricably woven into the school’s brand and for some to prefer a fresh start on that front? No, absolutely not.

I genuinely see this as a unique opportunity for UNLV to rebrand itself and personally, I think it’d be an idiotic mistake on their part to miss this out on this generational opportunity.

Have you read anything on this? The confederate stuff was NOT initially included in the moniker/mascot/newspaper etc. They were rebelling against UNR. This has been written about extensively. The people opposing the name are literally rebelling against it.
