RE: UNLV eyes mascot name change
Mississippi should do a modern rendition of the Magnolia Tree for it's flag. That would be similar to California having it's homage to the short lived Bear Republic. Perhaps they can have a theme homage to the Spanish (Bonnie Blue) rule in some form. Whatever, the confederate army war banner of stars and bars needs to be done away with; it is too closely associated with slavery and post-war lost cause mythology. Neither has any place in modern America beyond the history books.

I think a Magnolia flower like this one below on a blue field would be stunning.

As for Rebels, while the name may have specific civil war connotations, but the name itself is generic, so can be transformed. Updated to mean civil rights leaders and reformers. But this might not be possible, as a hard core might fight to keep rebel associated with slavers. (For UNLV I always felt it was out of place -- running rebels could have been the road runners or desert stallions or the coyotes or some other desert thing)

The Mississippi State flag however must go. There is no way it cannot be associated closely with slavery and segregation.

Just going to point out for the sake of historical accuracy that Mississippi uses the Confederate battle flag in their state flag, not the Stars & Bars. Georgia's state flag is the Stars & Bars with the state coat of arms added to it.

I do agree with you, though, that the Magnolia would make for a great flag. Possibly along similar lines as what South Carolina has with the palmetto. I personally think South Carolina has one of the very best state flags.

Unlike Georgia's old flag, Mississippi's general design predates the Civil War. It just wasn't an "official" flag. Mississippi did have a magnolia flag at one point in time.

How about the Tumbleweeds? Instead of the Running Rebels, we can have the Rolling Tumbleweeds or even the Tumbling Weeds!

So I think the Sharks have it.

To really rub salt into it, the mascot costume can be a hybrid shark/human with Tarkanian's face.

Even if/when a university changes its name, it takes years (even decades) for a rebranding to take effect. For example, at Marquette, many older alumni still call the teams the Warriors, before moving to the Gold briefly, followed by the Golden Eagles. At some point, those alumni/fans will die out and only people will associate with Golden Eagles - but that is years away.

I get the fight the PC crowd is pursuing, but I've always been confused from it (with athletic names) because you will still have fans and alumni associate and use the former names as a source of pride (even if it is deemed inappropriate). You can change the name, but you cannot cancel or eliminate those memories, and you especially can't eliminate the associations for many years to completely get the public perception away.

FWIW, I would have much rather had MU keep the Warriors name and instead just eliminate the Native American association. However, MU leadership wanted complete break to forever dissociate itself from any negative or any inappropriate connection down the road.

If Joan of Arc can be considered a Warrior, so can a basketball team.

Marquette had perhaps the stupidest name change ever.

And as anti-PC as I am, I don't understand how Washington is still the Redskins.

That’s an understatement....

Interesting is not the appropriate word here. More likely replaced with an expletive.

They could be the UNLV SJWS. UNLV on one side of helmet, SJWS on other side.

It was always a weird name for them.

Maybe they could use some Italian slur since the mob made Las Vegas. And they are tearing down Columbus. Hey, Notre Dame is the "Fighting Irish."

The Fighting Irish name arose out of pride for the Irish Brigade's heroics in the Civil War.

The Irish Brigade's chaplain, Father Corby, has a statue at Gettysburg and later became ND's president.

Besides, most Irish-Americans do not object to the name, quite the contrary. It is a source of pride, not a slur.

Try again.

Not are any of the other names that were or are possibly changing.
The only one I can think of was SE OK State Savages.
Warriors, Redmen, etc could have kept their name but dropped the INDIAN link

Because the statute of limitations of offense has passed. The name is 90 years old, how can one begin to be offended now?

Exactly. I never thought Indian whenever the Warrior moniker came up.

Some people weren't alive 90 years ago, when they find out that an NFL team is named after cutting the skin off of people after you kill them so you can collect the bounty, for some reason they object to that.

When I went to Miami in the 80's, I knew that the name was considered racist, so I wasn't surprised when I found out that they had changed it.

For the NFL team, odds are pretty high there were some Native Americans who were offended by it back 90 years ago, they just didn't get the same hearing as Native American anti-mascot campaigners do today.

RE: UNLV eyes mascot name change
I'm not a fan of the political correctness movement overall (it seems forced and sometimes even driven by people's insecurities), but there is something to be said for our trying to be more civil and respectful of each other.

As for UNLV, and given that Las Vegas is home to lots of magicians ... how about the Conjurers? It's distinctive and "show business-y." Or maybe the UNLV Stratosphere (to honor the history of what is now called The Strat).

On this theme, and as a long-time Belmont University fan, I was displeased when BU changed its names from Rebels to Bruins. I favored the university disassociating itself from the negative elements of the history of the Confederacy. But "Bruins"? Very odd (I guess some folks liked the alliteration). Belmont could have kept Rebels and used an outlaw country music theme. Or, and on the music "note" (bad pun intended), how about the Belmont Backbeat or the Belmont Black Keys?

In general, if a school is going to change its nickname ... go with a name that no other university uses. Be distinctive.

C'était une sorcière!
Non, c'était une grande dirigeante de la France!

The English part of my brain is having a conversation with the French side. Let's ask the German side for it's take.

Looking at what the term meant 200 years ago is when PC becomes Permanently, Completely stupid. 90 years ago and the current understanding of the term Redskins is simply a pejorative way to refer to Indians like dago is to Italians or some other terms that can't be used on here.
