They could be the UNLV SJWS. UNLV on one side of helmet, SJWS on other side.

It was always a weird name for them.

Maybe they could use some Italian slur since the mob made Las Vegas. And they are tearing down Columbus. Hey, Notre Dame is the "Fighting Irish."

Cue generic bird mascot!

The term “rebel” is not racist. The fact that they chose their wolf mascot to be draped in confederate garb is unfortunate and already in the past. Exactly 44 years in the past.

The UNLV teams of Tark’s era embraced the Rebel moniker and took pride in it. Had nothing to do with slavery or the confederacy. They were Rebels to the establishment of college hoops.

I say keep the Rebels and make Grandmama the new mascot. Even though the frontiersman is not a rebel, nor is it racist.

RE: UNLV eyes mascot name change
Here’s the initial press release from 1982:

“UNLV’s long awaited mascot will make his debut this Thursday, Dec. 9 in the Las Vegas Convention Center at the UNLV-UNR basketball game. His name is “Hey, Reb,” or “Reb,” or “Mr. Reb,” if you prefer. He’s no slouch at 6-foot-6 inches of Rebel strength and vitality. He’s a mountain man with an oversize hat and rifle, dressed in a long coat with “Hey, Reb!” written on his back; pants with a tall pair of boots; a large belt buckle bearing the initials UNLV; and a large head with a huge handlebar moustache, hat and feather. “Hey Reb’s” outfit was made by costumier Gail Lehtinen of the UNLV theater arts department. “It is a character that well represents a rebel, a mountain man,” said Public Information Services Director Les Raschko. “We don’t think it will be offensive to any particular group. I think this will be well accepted in many, many ways. It has been hyped and timed, and everyone has been very thrilled by what they have seen,” Raschko said. “He has a collegiate atmosphere about him that fits in.” “The character’s trappings can easily be identified with the West. He is a rugged individual, the pathfinder of 100 years ago,” said Mike Miller of Kelly-Reber and Miller Advertising. Miller provided the costume design and all rights to its use for a total fee of $1. “UNLV has been a very good client, and I wanted to put something back into the university,” Miller said. A committee of student government, athletic department, student services and university public affairs representatives selected Miller’s design from a number of submissions. The committee chose “Hey, Reb” because it seemed to best represent the image of a Westerner, rather than a Confederate rebel.“

It’s my understanding the Rebel was originally picked based on the movie Rebel Without A Cause (around the time the school was founded). In other words it was supposed to be based on a Beatnik. Like you said, they decided to go with the Confederate angle which was supposed to signify them breaking away from the flagship, the University of Nevada (Reno is in the North, Vegas is in the South).

He's talking Dixie St's university name. Honestly, they should just keep it simple and change 3 letters to David St. Still get to keep DSU.

It’s named for the region. I really doubt Mormon settlers were keeping up with the Civil War and such

Pretty easy, actually, change the name from "Rebels" to "the Resistance". The kids will lap it up. The new mascot could be based on that motorcycle rider from Easy Rider (ahem), saving a lot on brand transition costs.

It's too bad they missed the chance to shift to "the Rebel Alliance" before Disney bought Star Wars ... if they tried it now, they'd get their leather pants sued off.

Lincoln had said slavery and polygamy were the two biggest evils of his time. Slavery was not a big evil to the mormons.

East Carolina folks are talking about changing the Pirates. If Pittsburgh Pirates doesn’t change I don’t think we should. Very interesting world we are living in.

They should call themselves the mobsters with a mascot "Bugsy Flamingo" (a Jewish mobster to avoid the Italian stereotype ... is that better?)

Sure, why not go from making a barely-organized mob angry to making a well-oiled machine full of professional hatchet men in the ADL angry instead?

Get your pirate gear while you can, before you get bird-and-block-lettered.

I hope they don’t pick a generic bird mascot. How about “Honoring” Tark by picking the Sharks? Your choice of the logo is of Jerry or an actual shark

While also honoring one of the sources of income that helped build Las Vegas, before it was overshadowed by Payday and Car Title lenders.
