Ferriss Trophy will go to state's best player
The Clarion-Ledger
Special to The Clarion-Ledger
Considering his achievements, it seems only fitting that the trophy symbolic of the state's top player be named after ex-DSU coach Boo Ferriss.
College football in Mississippi has the Conerly Trophy, awarded annually to the state's top player.
If all goes according to plan, Mississippi college baseball will have a similar honor bestowed annually beginning in 2004 named after David "Boo" Ferriss.
"Clearly, if there was one man to name a college baseball award after in this state, Boo Ferriss would be the man," said Michael Rubenstein, executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.
Ferriss was not only a standout player at Mississippi State, he was one of the state's legendary baseball coaches at Delta State. He also was an all-star pitcher with the Boston Red Sox in the late 1940s before a shoulder injury cut short his career.
Rubenstein said the Hall's board members had been talking about creating the baseball award "off and on, for the past couple of years," and recently decided to go ahead with the idea.
The Major League Scouting Bureau will submit three candidates for the award. Final voting will be done by a statewide media panel.

That is cool. It is always good to give kids a goal to work towards.........it makes them better players and gives them something to look back on when they are older.
