Now imagine the upper deck bleachers gone and replaced with seats. And the solid west wall gone and the seats are in horseshoe.

Someday.....

If Tarleton State ever adds seating on one baseline side of the gym, they need to move the court further away from the opposite side wall. The gym walls are too close to the court and gives players little room to decelerate on fast breaks layups and dunks. Even with the wall padding, it is an abrupt stop.

It is further away than you think in its current configuration. The wall has never been an issue to player safety/stopping on fast breaks.

Yeah that curve in the picture throws it off. Do need more seating though.

RE: Facility Needs
Even though Wisdom Gym is a high school sized facility, it appears to be well maintained. However, as many have admitted, if Tarleton State has high asperations of being a major player in D1 basketball (a high mid-major), it will need to upgrade its facility size (or replace it) and add or improve its amenities (locker rooms, practice facilities, weight room).

Of the the four D2 move ups (GCU, CBU, Dixie State, and Tarleton State), Tarleton State has the least impressive basketball facility with the smallest attendance numbers entering D1.

I am sure the intimate environment (acoustics) of Wisdom Gym gives the Texans some form of a home court advantage. But the lack of bodies in the stands and fans (and visual distractions) behind the baskets take away some its intimidation factor.

I do like like the design of your court though. It looks pretty slick.

I would love a bigger better facility, but I've watched teams like Texas play in a cavernous half full arena. I would rather have 3000 in a small arena than 3000 in a 10000 arena.

We need more fans in the stands. I hope the fans come out in droves and we NEED to build a bigger facility to accommodate all of the fans

St Marys of California is an example of someone who has a similar size, setup gym and manages to be successful.

I agree, Tarleton State does not want to over-renovate Wisdom Gym or build a new arena too big; I think an acceptable arena size these days is 5,000-seats. However, keep in mind St. Mary's is a private school who athletic funding is less tied to attendance. Even then, St. Mary's facility is over 1000-seats larger than Wisdom Gym and nearly packed for every game. Keep in mind, it has taken St. Mary's many years to build a program as strong as it is now; with the help of Gonzaga's success and the hiring of Randy Bennett. Also, I am pretty sure despite only 3,500-seats, St. Mary's gym has a lot of bells and whistles attached to it. Check out their video board. Now that is a distraction behind the basket.

Cal Baptist's arena is 5,000-seats. Since joining the WAC, attendance has risen from 2,290 its last season in D2 to 3,181 this last season in the WAC. Slightly more than what St. Mary's averages per game.

As I've said before, I'd like to see Tarleton mirror Dixie's facilities, outside of Memorial stadium. They have some really nice, yet very practical facilities. Right-sized, without going overboard. Burns arena is a great example for Wisdom to target in the near term. A Dixie-esque baseball facility would also look really nice in Stephenville. Both are very doable.

Forgetting COVID for the moment, I think with Billy Gillispie our attendance will go up like they used to be. We had sellouts most nights several years ago when the men’s team was really good. This year may not be a good test for attendance numbers, but I think we can sell out the gym most nights. I looked on the WAC website for attendance numbers and couldn’t find them.

RE: Facility Needs
Facility wise, Dixie State seems well positioned for the move to D1. Burns Arena is good sized at 4,779-seats. And, Dixie State was yearly one the top drawing schools in attendance in D2; prior to this D1 move (drawing 2,432 last season). We will see if this move to D1 (and the WAC) will increase its attendance even further; like at GCU and CBU.

If you scroll down the 2019-20 team statistics, you will find season attendance numbers.

As I have stated over and over

Tarleton will expand Wisdom Gym. A couple of things are on the docket first...
1. Memorial Stadium Field house and visitor seating.
2. Restrooms and concessions for baseball and softball
3. Construction of aquatics center at Rec Center (so the expansion of the gym can occur).

St Mary's gym sucks. Video board or no video board. It is laid out in a strange way and I have never liked it.

Also need locker rooms, restrooms, and concessions for the soccer field if that is actually going to happen.

I was referring the baseball and softball facilities only. We need to expand and improve the seating at both. Also need indoor/outdoor pitching and hitting facilities. Better and bigger locker and training rooms. An indoor/outdoor infield for practice would really be nice.

We use to have a practice infield behind Cecil. I was just adding to the list of needs when bringing up soccer.

Im sure yall will get your baseball stadium up to par at some point but I bet it won't be for a long while. Geography alone should help you get big name opponents in Stephenville. UTSA gets plenty of name opponents and their stadium is worse than my 2a high schools lol, but I suppose they do have some advantages of their own.

So if we remove the western wall and horseshoe this end, could we do the same thing on the east side? We put concession stand and locker rooms where the pool is now, we could horseshoe the East end. This could add an additional approximately 1500 seats with the two areas.

Then the question, is it worth it? Would we be better off building a new arena seating 7000-8000 and converting existing Wisdom into the practice facility?

Just a thought.

Google Burns Arena at Dixie. Perfect layout for a Wisdom expansion, and exactly what you just described. Bonus is it would still allow fans to be courtside.

I believe a new Tarleton/City of Stephenville arena will eventually happen, but its not that essential right now with all the other projects in the works.

Wisdom Gym seem to be a well maintained facility. I am assuming what you are describing is to blow out the gym where the row of trees are currently; up to the edge of Vanderbilt street or even further. That might get Wisdom gym up over 4,000 seats; or maybe up to 4,500 seats but not much bigger.

However, according to a 2009 master plan, there is a concept to build a Special Events Center to the south of the football stadium. If that is the aspiration, I doubt the Administration would pour more money into Wisdom Gym.

RE: Facility Needs
You’re geography is wrong despite your research. If you BLOW out the gym where the trees are located, you are taking out 50% of the seating. Its hard to see in your picture but the two metal doors on the near wall is the indoor pool where they would BLOW out the wall to create a horse shoe seating arrangement.

New arena will not happen in the near future. Wisdom expansion is the most possibly scenario.

And the 2009 Master Plan was redone in 2010 and the new area was not included. This doesn’t mean it can’t be added. Our 2010 MP took us through 2020 so there should be a new coming very soon.
