I thought hburg stays in place regardless. Hburg has done nothing wrong.

Exactly. So, why do we need anyone else? hburg's got this.

We can't even talk about JMU sports among JMU fans without name calling sometimes. If we can't do it on the topics that bring us here, there is absolutely no way we can do it on much more controversial topics.
We shouldn't have to rely on a moderator to keep the peace, but unfortunately we do at times. The truth is we can ALL do better (myself included).

Guys, seriously, have you visited other boards. Check out the smelly Bisons board. They call each other the worst names. And, there are worse boards than theirs. Ours is tame compared to many. I, personally, do not see any need for additional moderation. It could be counterproductive. Less is more.

I agree with most of the names being thrown around - especially Dukester and Deez.

It is probably a healthy thing to have multiple moderators. This will help fill in gaps where one moderator is missing. And having a board with many members it makes sense.

Good point. But if you said, "I love that we have Latrele as our trump card in the backfield," there are some here who would scream for moderation as the sentence contains the word "trump," and as we all know, that is a very bad word that triggers some folks.

I kid! Moderate all you want.

The comments come from the pissing matches people get in on here not the differences of whether JMU football should run more.

Mountain out of a Mole Hill! Who gives a crap if some politics gets mingled in there every now and then. I didn't know we had a bunch of snowflakes on here. If you don't like it don't get involved in the particular thread. Get over it.

Moderators can't moderate opinions about sports even if repeated 10,000 times.

For some people that might be it, but the things that make threads unreadable at times have absolutely nothing to do with opinions about that kind of stuff.
If you click a thread on conference realignment and don't like what you're reading about conference realignment, that's 100% on the person that clicked on the thread.
The things that make it unreadable to me are three separate issues:
1.When we start attacking one another. I'm not talking about fun ribbing into one another. I'm talking about taking the low road and hurling insults and resorting to name calling just for thinking someone had an opinion someone else totally disagreed with.
2.Going completely off tangent. When you click a thread for conference realignment and there are page after page of people talking about something completely unrelated to the topic, that's a problem. When you click on a link and have to go back pages to find out how the discussion even got to that point, that's pretty ridiculous. It doesn't have to be political, but at times it obviously does go there.
3.Trolls.

Here's the best part of this: we can fix a lot of this on our own. Be more respectful to one another. There is an actual person on the other side of things. Try to keep that in mind.
Try to make an effort to stay on topic. If you have an opinion that has nothing to do with the topic, just make a new thread. No reason to have a recruiting thread turn into a 10 page discussion on why narwhals are actually mermaid jedis. Of course that is an over-exaggeration, but you get the point.
And I said it before, but this is not at all an indictment against hburg. I just think it's impossible (and unfair) for one person to have to keep track of everything that happens here and expect things to be squeaky clean. It's just not reasonable.

Agree, and I think its the combined effect of the items above that can make things really bad. When you get 3 or 4 of the main "active" threads ALL going off topic to the same fights with the same people, thats not enjoyable for anyone else. It just starts to feel like you are living in a dump where people insist on flinging poo. Simple civility would cure a lot of this. But it seems in some cases we may need moderators to step in.

This is the best post I have read on this subject. If folks did not do #1 and #2 above, the boards would be more enjoyable for all. Trolls require a moderator to shut them down if they get out of hand.

RE: Moderator nomination thread
So far we have these nominations.

Purple
Dukestar
Olddawg
Deez Nuts
JMUSka
JMU007
POTUS#4
AssyrianDuke
KickitToScotty
Hyper
PurpleHazed

Am I missing anyone? Perhaps what we can do if the above names are okay with their nomination we can put it for a vote via a poll.

If I missing anyone please let me know, if you are not okay with your nomination let me know also. Once conferred the names will go into a poll. If GTS is okay with it, maybe vote for a week. If you want one or two or three extra moderators also make that known.

Bingo! That's exactly the way I see it. It's not like discussing politics or social issues is a regular thing here, and I really don't see what the problem was. COVID has had a major impact on our lives, individually and collectively. That impact has saturated every fiber of our society. How could it escape being discussed here, and things that are relevant to it, like politics?

RE: Moderator nomination thread
As hburg mentioned, he cannot read every post in every thread. It is up to us to self-mod when needed. I'm guessing reporting blatant disrespectful posts leads to warnings, suspensions and ultimately bans. Perhaps a little education (myself included) on the options we all have to keep this place decent is the only fix we need. I have read some posts that borderline racism, and others that serve no purpose but to insult another poster, but admittedly I did nothing to make sure they don't show up again. For those in the same mindset, let's make sure the tools we have (once I learn them) to make sure this place continues to thrive.

He did. In addition to still using IE and AOL, I wouldn't have the temperament for the job. I'm a really nice guy...until I'm not. If someone's acting like a jacka$$, there would be public shaming.
