RIP Rick Roberson

Read elsewhere that Bearcat and NBA great Rick Roberson passes last month. He was before my time, but I know there are several of you that would have been contemporaries with him.

RE: RIP Rick Roberson
In my opinion Rick was the most skilled offensive center/power forward for a full career in Bearcat history. My clear memories go back to the mid-sixties so I don't remember Connie Dierking in college. Fortson was a monster posting down low but didn't have the moves or shooting ability of Roberson. Wingfield maybe had the greatest pure skills but unfortunately his time was too short.

Roberson and Ard certainly was one of our most talented front court combos ever. I guess base on results Paul Hogue and George Wilson would claim the top spot.

RIP Rick

Kenyon senior season probably would rate 4th as greatest season by a Bearcat after Oscars three. But Kenyon was not a great offensive force before his senior year. Just my opinion but he did not have the pure all around offensive moves and shooting skills of Roberson. Defense and rebounding ability it is a no contest pick to take K-Mart as a senior.

RE: RIP Rick Roberson
Roberson was very talented, particularly as a rebounder and as a scorer near the basket. UC and UofL had some great games when Wes Unseld was at Louisville and Roberson was at UC, although Unseld was clearly the better player. Roberson sometimes lacked the effort that Jim Ard more consistently exhibited on a game-to-game basis. Although Roberson ranks high at UC in both career scoring and rebounding, I actually think he had a higher ceiling. Roberson wasn't in the greatest of shape and didn't have the killer mindset of a Pat Cummings, Jarron Cumberland, Danny Fortson or Gary Clark, for that matter.
Roberson was a high draft choice and had some success with the Lakers and the Cavaliers, but in those days few NBA games were televised and Roberson did not have much exposure at the professional level. Roberson was from Memphis Mitchell High School and Memphis did not recruit black players at that time, so UC was able to land him even though Roberson reportedly wanted to play at Memphis. Keith Lee and Larry Finch later would be the first black players at Memphis and would lead the Tigers to the NCAA runner-up position in what I recall was Finch's senior year. Roberson was frequently seen around the UC campus, particularly in TUC in the pool room. Ard was frequently seen around the campus, carrying books and studying. Ard was a top student in the College of Business. He would later win an NBA Championship with the Celtics.

Ard is one of the most unheralded Bearcats ever. He averaged 19 points, 15 boards his senior year and along with Kenyon Martin is the only Bearcat to block 10 shots in a game.

UC has not done a good job keeping the legacies of past players. The typical UC fan knows Oscar, NVE, Kenyon, Danny Fortson, Melvin Levitt, Steve Logan, SK and a couple guys from the past couple season but that is about it. There is so much history there to be shared.

One of the first things JB did last year was to have a former player outing at his place last year. I heard there were hundreds in attendance from the 50s-present day, guys that have not been around the program for a number of years. Last year we had a lot of former Bearcats attending games who had not done so in a while. I am confident JB can help forge the connection to players from the past.

Agree totally except Roberson was first to have 10 blocks in a game two years before Ard and Eric Hicks also had a ten block game. I believe Kenyon did it twice.

Roberson’s 10 block game was also a triple double game.

Damn, another Bearcat passes on.

Rick Roberson, Jim Ard, Johnny Howard and Mike Rolf up front with Dean Foster and Gordie Smith running the point. Good Bearcat teams, just not great from '66-69.

Roberson was a very personable, all around, good guy. Lots of good memories.

RIP Rick.

Appreciate everyone's insights on a player I was not all that familiar with. Just curious - where did you get the 19/15 numbers? I'm seeing different numbers here: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/pla...son-1.html

Yep, thanks. Read it as "And" not "Ard".

In today's world - 64 team NCAA format - Roberson's Bearcats would have been in multiple NCAA tournaments.

Definitely those late sixties teams were equal or better than some of our teams in the recent NCAA run ; Jim Ard's 21-6 senior year especially but second place got you the NIT in those days. The prior years with Ard and Roberson were very good also; 18 wins in those days was better than 20+ win seasons now with less cupcake wins upfront. Looking back and comparing difficulty of schedules to current ones, one of those seasons 4 of first five games were at Kansas , at Kansas State, Southern California and Stanford. Next season started Kansas State, at Southern California,at California and at Stanford. Also in my opinion there is no doubt the MVC then was much stronger than the AAC today.
