Virginia squires
Now I know I'm showing my age,but the squires our only major pro team, is what got me liking odu.they would be on tape delay on radio after squire games and I grew to love odu with Jeff fuhrman, ronnie valentine,Wilson washington, reese neyland and the boys.what wasn't to like, 25-4 and 22 wins in a row. I think that is still a record. That and how pitiful the squires were at that time,no more Charlie scott,dr. J,or george gervin. People forget that our own dave twardzik was a squire. I remember going to games as a kid of the squires. It was awesome, then my love for odu trumped that. Thanks paul webb and the guys. Tell me your squires stories if you were around then. I'm an odu fan,but I don't mind squeezing a little squire talk in.

RE: Virginia squires
Watched the Squires play a few times in Scope. In the late 80's I was flying to Philly for a work related conference, lo and behold there was Dr J and Dick Vermeil, the former Eagles coach, sitting together on the plane. I worked up the courage to approach them and told Dr J about my memories of watching him play for the Squires. He graciously listened, then Vermeil asked me what college I rooted for, I said ODU, and he said, "I know about ODU, they have good men's and women's basketball teams." I got both their autographs, great memory. BTW, Reese Neyland lived in Southern California and pastored a church in Pasadena for many years. He and his wife just moved to Florida, where he is involved with a Christian ministry there.

RE: Virginia squires
Was a kid when the Squires started playing in Norfolk. Went to a few games every year with other kids in my neighborhood. Remember George Gervin during pre-game warm ups. He was talking with us while shooting along the baseline. He called bank shot and made all three he shot. Until then, I never even realized it was possible to bank a shot from there, much less do it 3 times in a row on purpose. He was an unbelievable shooter and it was very early in his career.
Also, George Carter lived in the apartments at the end of our neighborhood. Saw him a few times when I filled in running that paper route.
Here's a link to the Squires roster during the Norfolk years. Names I had not heard or thought about in years.
