If they need his scholarship, they'll utilize it.

I believe RB was informed when he received the good news that it may not be permanent. We'll see.

According to Justin Williams' article today, Miller plans to honor the scholarship (my reading of that was at least for the upcoming season).

I feel bad for the position Brannen left Miller in on the Banks situation. Banks clearly is not qualified for a scholly at UC and I hate giving one out as a charity, especially in basketball in the year of the transfer and everything else going on with the program. But I'm sure Miller knows its a bad look to take it away from him. I keep wondering whats going on with Vic.

Maybe. There is some logic to it though. Transfer portal will still be a thing next season and if it doesn't work out you open a spot for next year. UC went from basically nothing on the roster to a pretty full roster where nearly everyone can play 3 or 4 more seasons here if they want and the staff wants it. On the roster right now only Koval would be ineligible to play beyond next season (assuming he gets the waiver to play this year).

Technically Banks is only a Junior next season though. So you could be burning that scholarship for 2 seasons potentially. I just didn't see anything in Banks' limited minutes that would suggest he is anywhere close to being a even C- level player at this level. I'm not sure he'd start for Moeller.

My guess is Miller was going to pocket one for next year to even out classes anyways...Banks will get to use the open scholarship for a season.

My understanding is he's honoring it for the upcoming season. I'm guessing it will be addressed again next offseason.

He has kind of done a great job of balancing already though:

Seniors: DeJulius, Newman, Koval
Juniors: Adams-Woods, Banks, Davenport, Oguama
Sophomores: Hensley, Madsen, McGinnis, Saunders
Freshman: Lahkin

If he can get a freshman and senior in here, he kind of has a pretty standard distribution of players, and does allow for him to really be foundational for his program with 4 slots in the next class.

Other than koval all those guys can be treated as the class below if we want.

And if they want...I'm acting as if things are going to go back to "normal" with class designations after next season. DeJulius has had enough drama to be done with college, Newman only has so much tread on the tires, etc.

Man, Wake Forest is a mess this offseason.

They were 6-16 last year under new coach Steve Forbes. They graduated 5 seniors and lost 8 transfers.

No idea on DDJ, but I know that Newman stated in an interview that he plans to play here for two years and has discussed that with Wes. So he specifically can be counted as a Junior.

RE: Transfer portal
Given the turbulence of the portal this year, need we worry about any of these commitments getting flipped? I guess I don't know what the process is--a letter of intent? If not, a worst case would be continued poaching up until these new Bearcat commits enroll for summer or fall semester?

If we max out now, Kovol might be the only open scholarship for the class of 22’. Guessing Wes will want to bring in more than one guy in year #2.

I don't think he is in any way required to keep Banks on scholarship after this season...he is honoring the agreement that was made before he came on for this coming season. At worst you'd have two, though I think there would be more coming off the books in '22 either way. There is at least one guy on that list who isn't going to see the court at all this year and he will leave.

Hmmm. All SEC freshman team guard from Georgia is following the coach who recruited him (Dollar) and Mikey on the interwebz. KD Johnson...was a 4 star top 100 guy last year. Averaged 13.5 and shot 39% from 3 his Frosh season. Might be an interesting option for a scorer.

That would be wonderful. Has some years left and could walk into the perimeter rotation from day one.

Hope springs eternal for fans but you have to like what's been added since Miller's arrival combined with the guys that are back. I think we'll see the returning players take their game to the next level in a more positive environment that embraces the traditions of Bearcat defense and toughness. I believe this year's team will surprise many by exceeding what will likely be tepid pre-season expectations.

Not trying to be negative, but I just don't see this roster doing much damage. Hope I'm wrong though.

What do you mean by "too much" damage? I think it's clearly an upgraded, deeper roster from last season. I'm optimistic with development of the guys who have been here and a few new guys proving a good fit, they'll be competing for a tournament bid. I don't think you're going to be watching a team struggle to finish a game over .500.

I think they will do better than a game over .500 as well. Start of last year was a disaster, but not sure how much better they will be. You lose Keith and Tari which will have big impact and I don't think we replaced that talent at same level.

Tari was a loss of talent, but he only averaged 19 minutes and 7 points a game last
year. He had talent, but for most of the year it was unfulfilled. Hensley is just as talented as Eason on paper, and Oguama is more experienced.

Williams wasn't really a top talent IMO. He's a good player, but I don't see a big drop from Williams to the guys who will take most of his minutes (Newman or Madsen).

Keith was a phenomenal athlete who could either be really good or rather meh. He was mercurial. Was hoping he would smooth that out by his senior year, but he never really maxxed out his potential imo.

Hensley has talent, but if he was as good as Eason last year, he wouldn't have averaged less than 7 minutes per game for UNCG. I'm personally setting my expectations low for next year, regardless of his recruiting ranking. I'm confident he'll be a productive player by his 3rd year, but he couldn't crack the rotation as a freshman and will have to battle Davenport, Ody (although I think he'll mostly play the 5), and possibly another big the staff may still pull out of the portal for playing time.

I also can't see him guarding power forwards in the AAC with the frame he currently has. Give him a full year in the Monster Factory, and I think he'll be a nice player for us in time. I would expect Hensley to get some run in the non-conference against lesser competition, but likely not be a part of the regular rotation in conference play. If I'm wrong, then he's going to be a hell of a player based on who he'll have to steal minutes from.

I guess that's the point though. Not everyone can play extended minutes. But everyone can compete for those minutes in games, in practice and off-court. Iron sharpens iron and we shouldn't have to worry about the Exodus anymore.

I agree with the first sentence. Where I disagree is that he underachieved. Came in as a guard with no dribbling, shooting, or court vision. Those lack of skills limited his potential. I don't think he ever became an average ball handler for a guard but he became a decent shooter and actually started accumulating some assists at the end of his senior year. His best role was always going to be 4th or 5th starter on a good team where guys like JC and Tre can run the offense and KW could use his athleticism to make energy plays after someone else broke down the defense. KW as the best player on a winning AAC team was always going to be a disaster.

Put Eason on most UC teams and he would have averaged under 10 minutes. If we'd had a Tre Scott or Gary Clark on the team, Eason would barely have touched the floor. Eason definitely has the athleticism, but on a good team he wouldn't have seen the court much because of his high TO rate and high number of freshmen mistakes.

Eason's minutes are more of a reflection on Brannen's failure to get a quality big man on the team (still baffling that Brannen thought Vogt and Rap could play together) than of Eason's skill as a freshmen. Hensley had a lot more competition for minutes.

I'm not saying Hensley will be a star, but I don't think you can judge anything from his minutes as a freshman. Let's see how he does over the next year (or two) before we judge. There should be 10-15 minutes available in the backup PF role (maybe more if JD plays some minutes at the 3) and Hensley is the obvious choice to fill those minutes.
