What it all means
Hi,I'm jaybird 44 and I know you have seen my threads this week. I'm a lifelong odu fan since 1976,when I was a kid.odu represents my community and how we come together when we are the underdogs. I've been there for the ups and downs.our world is changing but our love for odu is not.i escape in this medium to here people like me who love the odu community and I remember how I feel when I'm at a game and odu does something amazing, how I feel one with the crowd,hi giving strangers and even hugging strangers, call me a nerd out someone out of touch but I'm a monarch and so are you. I've been reading fantastic stories this week.what I'm asking you is tell me why you are a monarch and what being a monarch fan means to you.maybe we can make new friends like at the ball games.monarchs for life.

I admire you enthusiasm! You've been a very positive poster in your time on ODUbbs. I've been a fan for much less time but I have already devolved to snark and cynicism. Your unrelenting optimism is refreshing, really.

RE: What it all means
That's very nice of you to say,but that's not the reason I'm posting these threads. I want to relive things with fellow monarchs. I love the stories and this is my way of showing everyone that hey, we our one nation(monarch and USA)and it's not all about being divided all and I mean all the time.sports is my sanctuary and odu sports is my passion,as i know it is for you guys. I truly want to here your stories about our history of odu athletics. I love them. It makes me feel united not divided as the whole outside world wants to be.So let's here why you guys are monarch fans. What made you want to root for ODU?Don't be shy.

Fan because I attended odu. My dad and step mom attended. My grandpa attended before tranaferingto uva. We're fans because rooting and attending games is a great family thing we all enjoy doing. Some great memories.

Speaking of family thing to do, I need to buy a 2nd brick for the stadium to add the name of our latest addition that arrived yesterday.

Haha true that. I kinda just did the tcc to odu thing by default. I was too busy surfing and skating in high school. I almost forgot to take my sats. Never really had any intention of going to college because I was a computer nerd. All the councilors back then thought IT people could get by just fine wit h certifications. Then a bug bit me about 19 or 20 and I got serious about learning. Well, a little more serious haha.

RE: What it all means
I've told this story before, but since you've asked I'll tell it again. (And notwithstanding you shrugging it off, I also fully agree with Cameraman's expression of appreciation for you always keeping things positive.)

My wife and I moved to Norfolk in 1985, and really didn't know anyone other than those we met through our respective jobs. In January, 1986, a thoughtful coworker invited me to attend an ODU game at the scope. It turned out to be the game against UAB, when that maniac Gene Bartow went into the stands after some fans who were (supposedly) throwing ice. It was wild.

When I got home that evening and was recounting the episode to my wife, it popped up on Headlne News and we got to watch it all over again. I was hooked as a fan ever after.

We became season ticket holders when the Ted opened, on the family plan - - best deal from an entertainment-dollar standpoint ever offered. ODU home games, some nearby away games and the Richmond tournament became part of the fabric of raising our kids.

They've now moved out of town, but my wife and I still attend games, along with her brother and his wife who have retired to Norfolk. ODU sports, most definitely, is a big part of what makes Norfolk great (to coin a slogan).

We moved here in 1994. I kind of monitored ODU sports because it was the local university. Both of my daughters graduated from ODU ('03 and '10). Then ODU added football, we got four season tickets the first year, and we've had them ever since. "Kind of monitoring" transformed into "fanaticism" -- and as they say, the rest is history.

Attended from 73 to 78, proud graduate. Was Sports Editor of Mace and Crown and worked in the Sports Information office. I love ODU. When I lived in Tampa in the 80's and 90's, went to see us play at USF and met Coach Chapel when the Final Four came to St. Petersburg in 1999. Moved to central NC in 2001 and have seen ODU play various sports at UNC, NC State, Charlotte, Campbell, and ECU. Always wear ODU shirt and hat. I enjoy educating friends I've made here who thought ODU was somewhere in Virginia, but not exactly sure what city. Now I've trained my friends who follow ACC schools to always ask me how the Monarchs are doing.

Graduated with my bachelors in 08 and my masters in 13, my dad graduated in 72. I loved ODU from the first time i visited. Loved the smaller city and living near the water and the beach like how i grew up my whole life. I have been a football season ticket holder since the second season, and enjoy tailgating with my dad and all my ODU grad friends on Saturdays. Gotten a little tamer now that we are all popping out kids, but wouldn't miss an opportunity to tailgate.

Attended 84-89. Those were the Sun Belt years, and the early years of the VCU rivalry. I also considered going to VCU, glad I chose ODU instead.

Not sure exactly why I became a Monarch but the reasons remained one are:

(1) Rathskeller
(2) 4400 and Friar Tucks
(3) That 2:00 AM hot doughnut spot in front of 7/11 before getting back to my dorm

RE: What it all means
First game was ODU vs. USF when I was in elementary school on a trip with my YMCA basketball team. Loved watching the Big Blue Beast commercials around the same time. As I got older I saw a lot about ODU sports on local news, the VP and some games on TV. Channel 27 even had the womens games on. Growing up about an hour west of Norfolk in rural Va. ODU seemed rather big time to me. Id see the ODU stickers in the back of cars, just the same as UNC, UVA, VT etc. In my little head back then, ODU was no different than UVA and bigger than VT. Later it became time choose a college. I looked at ODU, VCU, Chowan and NC State. Wound up picking ODU because I wanted an urban school, it was near the beach, I had a great campus visit, had a professor encourage me to apply to his program, and I could walk to the awesome music venues and bars right across the street. And at the time the campus was worlds better than VCU. My freshman year, some friends talked me into going to see a game at Scope against UVA. It was sold out, ODU won, the fans stormed the court, everyone thought we would be ranked top 25. I figured that was just par for the course being a Monarch fan... (oops). From that point on I was a Monarch for life. The fact that Ive truly made life long friends, not only from my time on campus, but directly through being a fan of this basketball team over the years, has literally changed my life.

RE: What it all means
I first started going to men's basketball games in the early 80's. I was a part-time student finishing by BS in Business Administration while working as an RN. I am not certain, but believe the games at Scope were free for students. Being a big spender, I joined the predecessor to ODAF for $50 a year, which gave me access to the Big Blue Room at Scope, free programs and free drinks. I remember the student seating being right next to the visitor's player bench, which was great for heckling, and a tiny pep band featuring a very loud trombone player. ODU played UVA at Madison Square Garden in a tournament and I made my first trip to NYC. There was a lot of hype about Mark Davis playing Ralph Sampson. We lost, but it was a fun game. I also went to most of the women's games at the Field House and saw some fantastic basketball.

I moved on to NYC to practice law and then Ann Arbor, MI. I started buying football season tickets the first year, while I was living in MI. I thought they would be a good investment, which they were for a while, and my brother used the ones I didn't sell. I returned to Norfolk three years ago and have been loving my season tickets in football, basketball and women's basketball.
