Starbucks was banning employees from wearing Black Lives Matter attire

Quote:Starbucks publicly voiced support for the Black Lives Matter movement while it privately banned employees from wearing any BLM-related clothing or accessories, according to a report.

The coffee giant sent out several tweets last week pledging to “stand in solidarity with our Black partners, customers and communities.” But offline, Starbucks was at the same time barring its baristas and other shop employees for expressing that same support at work, according to a memo obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The company stated that Black Lives Matters gear does not adhere to dress code policy banning pins representing “political, religious or personal issue[s]” — even though the chain gladly hands out LGBTQ and marriage rights buttons to those workers, the outlet reported.

Zing Shaw, Starbucks’ vice president for inclusion and diversity, reasoned that BLM messaging could “amply divisiveness” among customers, according to the memo, which pointed employees to a video of Shaw explaining the decision. The video has since been removed.

“[There] are agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principles of the Black Lives Matter movement — and in certain circumstances intentionally repurpose them to amplify decisiveness,” the memo explained.

Calvin Benson, a black Starbucks barista in Atlanta, told BuzzFeed that Starbucks’ decision was “disappointing in ways I can’t express in words.”

“My skin color incites violence at Starbucks. Should I not come to work?” he asked. “It is silencing and Starbucks is complicit. Now more than ever, Starbucks needs to stand with us.”

Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A company spokesperson speaking with BuzzFeed stood behind the memo, saying it was working to fight against “systemic racism,” but that the dress code was defined “to create a safe and welcoming” space for customers.

Then they changed their minds:

Quote:The Seattle-based coffee giant Starbucks will allow baristas to wear apparel sporting “Black Lives Matter” after initially saying it wouldn’t.

On Friday, three Starbucks executives penned a letter posted to the company’s website stating the company will allow workers to wear a “BLM pin or t-shirt.”

“We trust you to do what’s right while never forgetting Starbucks is a welcoming third place where all are treated with dignity and respect,” said the statement from Roe Brewer, Rossann Williams and Zing Shaw.

A day earlier, Starbucks drew backlash from progressives after an internal memo surfaced discouraging baristas from wearing clothing with political messaging.

The latest twist was welcomed by the Human Rights Campaign, a liberal advocacy group.

“We are pleased to see that Starbucks has listened to the voices of their Black employees and their allies and have changed their position to allow baristas to show their support for the righteous protesters who are demanding justice for centuries of racial violence,” said Alphonso David, President of HRC.

So Starbucks support people who scream racial insults at black police officers...

To show they "oppose" racism?

It is peak stupid in the US.

If they held to their guns and said "dress code policy banning pins representing “political, religious or personal issue[s]" i would say they were 100% in the right to start with... that being said, by such a action, they'd have to ban things such as "breast cancer awareness" t-shirts or other legitimate causes, as that falls under "personal issues".

Now that being said, if they don't have such a policy and then started enforcing that similar dress code, I'd say I'd even side with the lefties who were upset about this.

Starbucks already has an image problem with how their clerks have treated cops in the past and how little Starbucks does to punish those people (most of the time), so I don't think this changes anyone's mind about how lefty the company and its employees are)
