Zion and Duke
I believe I heard on the radio yesterday that Zion Williams’ family moved from a $900 rent per month house to a $4500 in Durham so that could watch Zion play at Duke.

From what was stated it appeared that neither parent had an increase in salary .
And I believe it was said that the NCAA stated they had no reason to investigate. So I assume the family must have paid their own moving expenses.

I'm guessing that they also got another job, because I'm sure they didn't continue working in South Carolina when Zion was going to school in Durham...

This was all going to come out in May, yet here we are...

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/2915...ike-adidas

Quote:According to a transcript of the call, which was read in court by defense attorney Mark Moore, Townsend told Code, "Hey, but between me and you, you know, [Anderson] asked about some stuff. You know? And I said, 'Well, we'll talk about that after you decide.'

"And then Mr. Code says: 'I know what he's asking for,'" Moore continued. "... 'He's asking for opportunities from an occupational perspective. He's asking for money in the pocket. And he's asking for housing for him and the family.'

"And they go on to talk. And Mr. Townsend says: 'So I've got to just try to work and figure out a way. Because if that's what it takes to get him for 10 months, we're going to have to do it some way.'"

I also read that his father ended up with 3 luxury cars after they moved.

TBF - Raleigh-Durham is wayyy more expensive than Spartanburg. Have some friends who rent a place near downtown Raleigh for close to $4K - equivalent house in Memphis would be maybe $1700

All while all of this was known before Zion ever played a game at Duke.

Are we surprised? The NCAA is a corrupt organization and a major part of their corruption is selective enforcement.

WTS, I don't begrudge Zion or his family getting "benefits." He should be able to be paid his worth for his services by a "school" and an organization that made a lot of money from a player of his skill.

Right, I don't care that Zion got money, just like pretty much every recruit does. What bothers me is the extent to which the NCAA came so hard after Wiseman while so many other top recruits got a pass.

Ricky Roe got injured and returned home to run the family farm, and Neon and Butch dropped out of college, but both played in the NBA. The university would be suspended from tournament play for three years. Pete did continue to coach, but at the high school level.

RE: Zion and Duke
And what all this "to do" about Zion and Duke just means that the NCAA is going to have to punish some whipping boy university with a serious spanking. The NCAA's present problem is who to ***** slap. Wanna bet nobody at Duke gets even a warning to "come on guys, watch it, puuulease"?

The preferential treatment given to certain schools is nothing new, nor will it cease as long as the present NCAA system of governance is allowed. It simply is an easy path to follow. MONEY.

Sure, but that does not change the fact that if you could only afford $900 before then they did not just wake up and magically have the means to afford $4,500 rent... At least not without assistance from Duke.

Selective enforcement is one of the many ways the NCAA is corrupt in order to keep control. They let certain high profile universities get away with anything as long as they can prevent money and control going to players at the other 90% of colleges under its purview.

I was saying it tongue in cheek. Zion obviously got paid.. but more power to him - they still definitely weren't paying him enough given tickets to watch him play at SUMMER LEAGUE were going for $140

That's crazy. He came in the league with LeBron James hype but his career will probably be similar to Brandon Roy.
