Wanted to share a stellar post from this past week from some W&M Athletics alums.

I had the pleasure of cheering some of these fellow alums on during my time at W&M and I’m happy to continue supporting them now. I think their points are important for leadership to hear at W&M (and also all of us across the country).
“To be the ally that we believe you want to be, the one we need in order to live safer lives, we urge you to candidly have the uncomfortable conversations, give space for, and encourage, your colleagues and athletes to do the same, and freely and openly identify the issues you purport to fight.”

Personally, I’m not a fan of these open letters meant to shame people into being the perfect allies. There are no perfect allies. To constantly nitpick statements of support, policy revisions, spontaneously planned events creates an abusive relationship when it should be love. Private conversations that improve public approaches is the only way to drive genuine support and change. To be deemed not good enough when you are obviously trying sucks momentum. I know this post opens me up to the whole crowd of people that want to call me out for the woe is me-ness of this statement but I really don’t care. It is also time to be thankful for support even if it isn’t perfect. That is how real change will be moved forward.
