HBCUs
I’m wondering what the impact of the current environment may be in terms of HBCUs and college athletics. We have started seeing some of the more successful HBCUs in terms of athletics move conferences (Hampton, NC A&T, and Florida A&M just announced), the Meac will now only have 7 members starting in 2021.

Also based on what’s going on in our country some recruits are seriously entertaining going to HBCUs over P5 schools. I also wonder how these Institutions May be better positioned relatively speaking in terms of endowments and as Colleges and Universities struggle they may be in a relatively better position to invest in Athletics.

I may be missing the mark but could we see a scenario where an Institution such as Howard invests more in Sports and becomes a viable all sports player and even plays in the same conference for all sports as JMU or Vcu etc?

MEAC is crumbling. SWAC is not. That’s not to overlook the financial concerns at some SWAC schools. Just wanted to clarify that the SWAC as an athletic conference is stable & strong and even poaching FAMU from the MEAC.

I wonder if the SWAC will add Bethune Cookman the only remaining Florida MEAC school as well to bring the SWAC to 12 members.

That would leave 6 MEAC football schools and 2 non football/all sports members (UMES and Coppin State). Seems like a combination of Big South and Atlantic Sun could work for the Northern Members as part of a Northern division in a regional league.

Maybe some non football Big South schools (Winthrop and Radford) would be better off in the Southern Conference.

Big South and whatever happens with the AUC/Atlantic Sun might become refuge for these MEAC schools.

The MEAC is imploding.

Please no CAA, no Norfolk State in the CAA.

Not even Bourne could pretend anymore...OMG.

Hampton would definitely get the call before NSU. Also, Hampton looks genius now with their pre-emptive move to the Big South and NCA&T joining.

Y'all think Howard or Hampton would be more likely to get a CAA invite, perhaps as a replacement for JMU?

RE: HBCUs
The SWAC is not going to stick with 11 football members (with 2 existing divisions)...they've gotta be going for Bethune-Cookman any day now. (In-state rival for FAMU).

The Big South and SoCon...along with even the NEC...are likely ready to pounce as well - especially for football.

This is, of course, assuming all programs (in all of the conferences) survive the COVID situation - which is not highly likely.

In any case, the MEAC is doomed.

RE: HBCUs
What's going to become of the Pioneer league- I know a few of these schools have revenue from basketball but this is not a full scholarship FCS conference and it is so far flung geographically.

Also- I can't see Monmouth football staying in the Big South- I'm sure they would be in line to take JMU or Delaware's FCS CAA football spot if the Dukes moved up.

Robert Morris is half out the door in the NEC for the Horizon so the thought is that NJIT (currently an outlier in the A sun) could take their spot. Would Mount Saint Mary's stay in the NEC then or would they better fit in the America East?

All of these moves could open up spots for a few of the Northern/Mid Atlantic HBCUs to join either the Big South (with Hampton and NC A&T) America East or NEC- not sure where they would fit best.

RE: HBCUs
I'm not sure how recent/current/future events may affect HBCU's as far as athletics goes. If it helps them, then great.

TBH, I am curious to see how the big FB programs in particular are affected, if at all...which, may not see any change. I mean, it will be interesting to see if young black blue chip athletes think differently about where they want to play and study considering a potentially-larger-than-some-might-think percentage of the people in their home college stadium may not welcome them into their homes or neighborhoods. This has been the case for many decades, so nothing really new. What is new is the perceptions and focus now. Again, this might help HBCU's or other programs who embrace diversity more widely - among their fanbase and certainly among their coaching and support staffs.

I'm starting to see some players speak out already and I expect it will only grow. In some states, college FB is as big or bigger than state politics. Take away their esteem in college FB and you'll see change potentially in state/local politics. Unlikely? Perhaps. Possible? Perhaps. We'll see...

Could this be the opportunity for VA State or VA Union (or both) to move up?

That’s a good point- that may be more likely than the current Northern / Mid Atlantic teams from joining other conferences.

FWIW, Jeff Goodman reporting one ACC MBB head coach is proposing each ACC program play an HBCU on MLK Day 2021. Take it FWIW...

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops

Source: One ACC head men’s basketball coach is set to make proposal this week to the rest of the coaches that all ACC schools play against HBCU’s on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 18, 2021) this season. Would be a very cool idea.

Suspect HBCUs need funds from an away game, but wouldn't it be really cool if ACC schools played in the HBCU gyms?

What are the odds that the HBCUs go 0-for in this situation? This would likely go from a good idea on paper to terrible optics in a flash...

Howard will host Notre Dame on Martin Luther King Day (1/18/21), per release. Part of multi-year series. Should be a terrific event in Washington D.C.

What is left of the MEAC is going to be right there with the Pioneer Football League (a non-scholarship league) as the two worst FCS conferences in the country.

The strongest MEAC teams have all left and what remains is not even remotely competitive. I'd think that outside of an NCCU type of program starting to make consistent noise nationally like NC A&T has, I just don't see the MEAC ever getting an at-large team into the FCS playoffs each season moving forward. 0.000001% of it ever happening.

This is what probably *should* happen, but never underestimate the committee’s tendency to overlook SOS and reward a good W-L record from weak conferences ... we’ve seen it many years now.

Hosting them on campus or at the Wizards arena? This will end up being a recruiting pitch for Notre Dame and not about Howard, just like when schools buy home games from their opponents like when Indiana hosted Penn State at the FedEx Stadium years ago.
