The strongest MEAC teams have all left and what remains is not even remotely competitive. I'd think that outside of an NCCU type of program starting to make consistent noise nationally like NC A&T has, I just don't see the MEAC ever getting an at-large team into the FCS playoffs each season moving forward. 0.000001% of it ever happening.

And if a team does step up like that, they'll be poached right away - either by the SWAC or (more likely) an east-coast non-HBCU conference.

The MEAC and SWAC tried the experiment of creating a separate identity for their conferences - hoping that those rivalries and the Celebration Bowl for football would improve their finances. I think everyone is learning that that is not the case. The trend now seems to be for the MEAC to be absorbed into the non-HBCU conferences.

Apparently, Bethune-Cookman's Trustees held an emergency meeting on Thursday to talk about the situation. It looks like they might go to either the SWAC or the Atlantic Sun (which means football goes to the Big South with NC A&T). Delaware State has a scheduled meeting next week...

RE: HBCUs
The fact that so many MEAC schools are scheduling their own meetings makes it sound (to me) like the conference leadership does not have a plan for making up these losses. Bethune-Cookman is an outlier in the MEAC now as their closest conference rival is South Carolina St, but Delaware St making potential changes is a big warning. MEAC needs to either shore up their conference membership, or this is gonna implode real quick.

In other news, I saw some folks in the Conference Realignment board making the case that Howard could be a target for the CAA (and it was not NoDak or DavidSt, the two that throw everything at the wall). Just wondering how folks on here would feel about Howard potentially joining the conference in the event the MEAC collapses. They have about $700M in endowments, a top 25 law school, and a top 40 business school. Haven't paid attention to their athletics, but I don't think they've made too much noise in any sport.

Hampton has always wanted membership. Would Howard be more likely than Hampton?

Why not both, would that not make some sense?

Interesting thought about the MEAC maybe imploding. If they get to the point where the remaining football schools look to other places to play I would assume that the Celbration Bowl between the MEAC and SWAC would also end. If that occurs, would that mean that the two conferences would regain their autobid to the FCS playoffs they they gave up when they started the Celebration Bowl? If so would reduce the at large selections by one or two I would guess.

It would also make the 1st round almost pointless. Almost half of those games would be guaranteed, lopsided blowouts each year. Even more than now.

I don't think the SWAC ever participated in the FCS Playoffs. I think it was just the MEAC with an auto-bid. The SWAC played their conference title game and was content to let the season end there.

RE: HBCUs
The Celebration Bowl payout is apparently $1M to each conference. And, it is now being carried via national TV networks. I can't see them walking away from that - I'd guess the MEAC imploding would be cause for concern, though I imagine the MEAC is developing contingency plans to add new programs if there is a continued exodus of current membership. I'd think for $1M for each conference, the SWAC would want the MEAC to survive. We'll see...

Virginia State could, but I don’t believe their leadership wants to leave D2.

I, of course, blame Alger and Bourne. But, you may have known that already.

RE: HBCUs
Here is a breakdown of some possibilities:

https://hbcugameday.com/2020/06/15/post-...meac-siac/

I think Scenario A is most likely...the stronger schools stay at DI and get absorbed by non-HBCU conferences. (Howard goes to the high-academic Patriot - which creates a great rivalry with Georgetown, NC Central and SC State go to Big South, B-C goes to Atlantic Sun/Big South). Although there were rumblings 1-2 years ago that SC State's finances were getting shaky.

Possible next steps could be: Monmouth and Robert Morris football are then told to find new homes within 5 years to lop-off that unneeded northern part...Robert Morris goes Pioneer, Monmouth football looks to the CAA - maybe as a replacement for JMU if we join a new re-aligned conference or in a "trade" with the Big South for Elon??

Also, the contract for the Celebration Bowl ends this year. With ESPN (who runs the bowl) bleeding money right now, there's a good chance they'll just end it.

Also saw where Morehead said they aren’t playing football in 2020. There was some talk about replacing lost members with D2. Not sure if any are in the position financially during this time to move up and if the revenues (Celebration bowl notwithstanding) are there to justify the added costs.

Where did you see that Morehead isn't playing in 2020? I can't find that.

I think he meant Morehouse (Atlanta, Div 2)...

Delaware St. to NEC...does MEAC lose a chance at an autobid?

I think this will be the last Celebration Bowl as we know it.

If so, the most logical next step would be for the SWAC to start participating in the playoffs. Though, I can't imagine the SWAC walking away from the Celebration Bowl completely ($$$, exposure via national TV, etc.). Perhaps there will be some other solution devised.

Can they do a “bowl” that’s just the SWAC title game? Keep all that money/exposure while participating in the playoffs?

That's what I was thinking when I said they may devise something else. This past year, they did the SWAC title game on Dec. 7. If they do a SWAC title game as a substitute for MEAC vs SWAC and stick to the same type schedule, they won't be in the playoffs of course because they typically are announced before Thanksgiving and start Turkey Day weekend. Doing a SWAC title game and being a part of the playoffs isn't really feasible in many ways (they'd have to do the title game in mid-November). So, they either dump the title game idea and head full steam ahead with the playoffs like the other D1AA conferences do it or they continue to stay out of the playoffs and schedule title/bowl games however/whenever they want. I'd bet on the latter.
