RE: South Carolina State Reported To Join Big South Along With Robert Morris Football?
(06-05-2020 12:46 PM)CarlSmithCenter Wrote: Can't speak to Robert Morris but SC State has been plagued by serious financial and leadership problems for a several years now, if they make a move I would suspect it would be to D-II, not the Big South, though being in a league with A&T and Hampton for football and the low-cost of travel for Olympic sports to play Upstate, Charleston Southern, PC and Winthrop would probably be alluring.
From what I understand, most of SCSU's financial issues are on the university side, and moving down to D2 wouldn't help their athletics budget deficit much if at all because they would no longer have access to FBS guarantee games. They played two guarantees on an 11 game schedule in 2018 and will likely do so again in the near future. If they're looking to stay D1 outside the MEAC, it's basically Big South or bust, and the Big South as constructed would actually reduce their travel. I believe their longest road trip for non-football sports would actually be to Hampton of all schools.
RMU football is a mortal lock to join the Big South if RMU moves to the Horizon League. Their only other real option as a football-only member would be the CAA, and the CAA would almost assuredly pass on that. Big South won't say no to anybody who wants to play football.

Nope...
Yep.
UNA had a fine run at DII, but that's DII. SC State has been DI-AA/FCS since the inception of the subdivision and has a storied history and tradition.
Still nope...
Well they could be the 3rd best HBCU football team in the Big South if they joined
NC A&T I'll give you, only because SCSU is riding a current five game losing streak to the Aggies (of course SC State leads the all-time series 33-22-2) but there's no way in hell they are behind Hampton with an 8-1 all-time record against the Pirates.

I would not be surprise that SCSU and a couple of others to jump off the sinking ship for greener pastures. MEAC needs to find other D2 HBCUs to move up, or send invites to non-HBCU schools to keep the conferences going. I know there have been several east coast schools not named an HBCU expressed interest in joining D1.

Indiana PA.
New Haven
Augusta
Columbus State
Lincoln Memorial
Only HBCU that mentioned in the past to go D1 was Central State Ohio. They have been gaining students.
West Florida may get an invite soon for ASun which their best bet.

1. Insufficient revenue
2. Lack of control of Branding Rights (or alternately failure to develop MEAC branding commercially, unlike the SWAC)
3. Too much diversity in programs in terms of school size and mission, finances, athletic competitiveness and spread out locations.

I think the reported rumor of South Carolina State going to the Big South might be actually true.

The rumors beginning to have teeth in SCSU looking to leave.
MEAC Expansion Thread
Iwokeup posted a link confirming the rumor reported in this thread. I say SCSU will join Big South soon for next year.

No, IWokeUpLikeThis posted a link to another board that is TALKING ABOUT YOUR RUMOR and for the most part concluding that there is absolutely nothing to it.
The "confirmation" in that thread includes: Quote: He is the same guy who said that both Upper Iowa and Arkansas Tech among others are ready to go D1. He talked about St Cloud going D1 AFTER they dropped football.
He throws about a hundred names against the wall, then crows about it when one happens.
And: Quote: Is he stable? I mean these are the ramblings of a mad man.

"Have address and endowment information of D2 schools, will travel to help you build your new D1 conference"
