RE: Norvell in hot water?
Does anyone know what the email said? If he’s trying to reach out to all players over the weekend (as he said) and let them know of his availability on an individual basis, an email makes sense. They have 120 players.

The ESPN article says Norvell sent a "generated" text to the players. So it was one canned text that got sent to everyone.

The team captain sounds like he's letting a little power go to his head and making a huge overblown deal about a simple miscommunication. I wouldn't want that kind of toxicity in charge of the team, but Norvell is stuck with it now. If he's lucky, the team captain (who is apparently REALLY in charge of the team) will let him keep his job.

yea, I do see that side too

you just have to be so careful with whatever you communicate

RE: Norvell in hot water?
Seeing how Coach Silverfield responded, I wondered how Coach Norvell would respond if he were still here. Boy he did not disappoint. No wonder the players weren't all too emotional when he left.

I think it was text a text. Not sure how anyone without an agenda would be upset with this or Norvell saying he reached out to each player.

I'm going with a combination of "stirring crap up" and "sports void boredom" for $400, Alex.

Replace “back and forth” with “reached out to” and nothing to see here. As aard said, perhaps he received replies from some but not all.

I don't think the issue was the text itself. It was the fact that he told a reporter he had "individual conversations with every player" over the weekend.

AD just released a statement saying Norvell and players had a "closed door" meeting, and that it went well. So they are moving on.

Yes, and it wasn't a press conference where Norvell said this. It was a one on one conversation. He could have misspoke or been misquoted. Looks like they had a team meeting today and things have quieted down.

That’s not what he actually said though. On a side note, we are obviously desperate to find something sports related to discuss, lol.

Nothing from a fan's perspective outside looking in but you can't lie like that to your players. He should have actually had a team meeting or met with each player individually like he said he did. First year and he's already lost the locker room. Gonna be rough for him until the old coach's players are gone. Also this will be used to negatively recruit against him.

The reporter listed the actual quote from Norvell but changed it in his tweet.

Norvell's quote:
We had a lot of open communication with our team, our players and our coaches. I went back and forth individually with every player this weekend.

Reporters interpretation:
Quote:had individual conversations with every player on his roster this past weekend focused on the events of George Floyd.

Changed ever so slightly by the reporter. If Norvell leaves out the back and forth he's fine.

Kids get 4 years. The system is set up where coaches can change but they are punished by transferring (sit 1 yr). So they sign to play for Coach X. Their school runs off Coach X and hires Coach Y. Natural to have some resentment towards Coach Y.

Did he "lose the locker room?" Or is he in transition?

RE: Norvell in hot water?
The problem is that we are in extremely contentious times. You have a victimized black community that has been and felt marginalized for generations. You have protests and riots occurring all over country fighting back against racial discrimination.

You then have a white coach making millions off the performance of young adults that are predominately black and that white coach stating he had individual conversations with each player addressing these racial issues. Norvell said this simply to make himself look good and look as if he was taking this situation head on with his black athletes. The players are not dumb and realize he said that to make himself look good. The reality is he sent out a generic text message that was mass sent. That is like me saying I have individual conversations with each of my clients every month because I blast out a monthly newsletter. Sure, that makes me sound good to a perspective client but it is deceitful at best and no client would consider that a one on one conversation. The players saw right through it and called him out it, as they should have. I think Norvell is a genuinely good guy but he should have kept his mouth shut or given some roundabout answer. But to claim he took the time to talk to each player one on one for self promotion purposes, in the midst of all of this, was a very bad decision and very bad look.

He lost it. It's his job to win the players over after he gets the job from the old regime. PR talk won't get players to buy in when you have you to build player's trust.

You do realize the protests are against "White" people.

Hence my comment.
