I can believe that.

It appears you don't have to have a degree:

Coaching Requirements
Article I, Section 9 of the TSSAA Bylaws states the following:

All coaches must be registered with TSSAA annually and will fall under one of the following categories:

Full-time certified teacher (a minimum of 100 school days) of a board of education with a Tennessee teaching license or the equivalent.
Retired educator (five or more years' experience) with a valid Tennessee state teaching license or the equivalent.
Non-faculty coach – Anyone approved by the principal, superintendent, and/or local board of education in the normal course of employment procedures in accordance with applicable state law.
Classified Employee – Any individual employed by a member school or school system in a position that does not require a teaching license or the equivalent. A Classified Employee must be employed 30 hours or more per week in a non-coaching position and may not be an independent contractor or an employee of an independent contractor.

Reading thru the list, I suppose he's a "non-faculty" or "classified employee" where it appears the only qualification is they want you to have the job..... assuming he doesn't yet have his degree. But good for him & son & it will get him some HC experience.

Yep...

A little High School experience and he will be ready to be a D1 head coach.

This move makes one wonder if that’s what he wants. Could be two years of the grind was enough for him. Or could be he feels no one could develop Mason for a career in basketball like he could, and he’s in no rush to do anything else. Or could be he and Mason will be a package deal for his next job. I guess we’ll find out.

Or he has a once in a lifetime opportunity to coach his sons and jumped on it. Just adding that to the list.

Should mean Mason actually starts, something that hasn’t happened yet in his career. This was a response to Miller threatening to remove his sons from the school.

In the end Houston made an easy choice: push out a proven veteran coach who was primed for a state title run before COVID for one of the most well known basketball names in the country.

I can tell you he met with and discussed taking over as head coach of a local high school team last year and transferring his sons there (not Houston obv, but very similar in terms of student body type and resources). Backed out in the end to stay at UM for this past year, but had serious conversations that were initiated by him, not the HS.

High school sports will never cease to be wild behind the scenes.

I think Emmitt Smith helped coach his son at Jesuit High in Dallas. I think there are videos on him on the sidelines helping coach the football team during games. I don't think he was considered a coach in the truest since but...the team coaches allowed him to be there during the games. Maybe there was more to it....not sure.

Houston didn't push Charlie out. He is moving back to Cincinnati where he is from. It was his decision.

I would hope so, as he is currently the #1 rated player in the state.

Let me get this straight: [ recapping your post]

Mason Miller is not good enough to be a starter unless his dad is the coach.

Mike Miller threatened to switch his son's school unless Mike Miller was named head coach.

Houston High fired it's current coach in order to keep a non starter from transfering

The number 64 recruit In the country by Rivals and #1 in the State of TN recruit by 24/7 recruiting was not good enough last year to start for Houston High School.
