RE: Rank the WAC men's Basketball Head Coaches...
Again, we heard all this before with Majerle and GCU. I’m just happy we have two new wac teams that are in the west and will be interesting watching them compete for 2nd place.

I don't think anyone thinks Jans is head-and-shoulders above the other coaches. Jans is the best coach in the WAC right now because he has has been WAC Coach of the Year all three seasons as head coach. Before Jans, the only NMSU coach to win the honor was Marvin Menzies in 2015. Jans has taken the Aggies to another level.

There are a number of good coaches in the WAC. Bryce Drew comes from a coaching family. His father is the College Hall of Fame for his coaching career. His brother was Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2020. He was great at Valpo, but it didn't go well at Vandy. That does not make him a bad coach. Gillispie is a fellow Bobcat and I wish him the best at Tarleton. He wins everywhere and I think he was an excellent hire. But he has had issues. He is a workaholic and an alcoholic, which is not a good combination. Hopefully, he has learned from his past mistakes.

Croy, Judkins and Hayford are proven coaches. They are not name coaches but they have had a lot of coaching success. They are building their programs and are at different stages than Jans is at. Jans is probably a sweet sixteen trip away from being hired at another school and then the conference power structure could change.

He took Vandy to the dance his first year, in SEC. In. The. SEC.
Back to the point of my 1. BCG and 2. Drew having SEC and BIG 12 ecperience. Two of the toughest conferences in all the land. I imagine they both are very confident about their chances in the WAC. It will all come down to recruiting. Jans will have the clear adavantage in that dept. 2020-21, but we'll see in a couple of years. Both BCG and Drew will surprise this year though. A couple of big upsets for BCG, Drew might push for the title.

If we are picking best résumé, then BCG is No. 1. But he has not had any recent success at D1 and he has to put together a D1 basketball roster and team. So, for the sake of this list, Jans, based on being the COY in the WAC three consecutive seasons, is No. 1. Coaching is coaching. Coaching in the SEC or Big 12 does not give a coach some kind of esoteric knowledge that the other coaches just don't possess.

There are six coaches in the WAC that have been Coach of the Year in their conference at least three times. That is six proven coaches that in the right situation can be successful. Chris Beard was Lone Star Coach of the Year in 2015 and four years later, the AP National Coach of the Year. BCG is not going to outcoach Rick Croy or Jon Judkins with his résumé. He is going to recruit and develop talent that will fit what he wants to do on the court and that will give him a chance to beat Croy and Judkins.

Yeah to each his own and you're entitled to your opinion, but I prefer a little diversity in my portfolio..

Correction:
Big 12 Coach of the Year (2005, 2007)
SEC Coach of the Year (2008)
WAC Coach of the Year (2004)
Finalist for the NABC National Coach of the Year (2004)
National JUCO Coach of the Year (2019)
3-time NTJCAC Coach of the Year
5-time TABC Coach of the Year

TARLETON: WAC COACH OF THE YEAR 202__?

BCG brings a unique pedigree that is unmatched in most of the NCAA, not to mention the WAC. And think about this: Back when he won all these awards, he was a drunk, workaholic burning the candle at both ends. Now he's sober, still a workaholic, with a second lease at life, and has everything to prove. Can't wait to see what our squad looks like after BCG's had a full year of building and recruiting. This is gonna be fun to watch! This is exactly why I'm glad Tarleton is in the WAC and not the SLC.

I found this to be productive, if only because I learned about the other coaches in the WAC. Plus today is Sunday and I want to be as unproductive as possible before Monday and work.

RE: Rank the WAC men's Basketball Head Coaches...
Thanks for the rundown, Pistol. I didn't realize the degree to which the experience and accolades of WAC coaches had stepped up in recent years. Outside of Madsen and Irvin (and maybe Hill, too), most have proven they know how to construct and lead successful programs. No pissing contest needed to see that the overall quality of play across the conference should continue to go up in the coming years.

I feel this coming year is probably the most gifted group of WAC basketball coaches since the WAC became a non-football playing conference. I have knocked Majerle as a college coach for the last few year. But I feel Bryce Drew is a significant upgrade for the Lopes. At the mid-major level, he has proven to be a productive coach. He is arguably the best "pure" recruiter among his WAC peers (al a Marvin Menzies), with the caveat that both Jans and Gillispie recruit players more (that fit) to a specific style of play rather than recruit just outright talent. Menzies used to recruit the best players he could sign and then mold his style around their strengths. Case in point, 7'5 Sim Bhullar won NMSU a lot of games under Menzies and Bhullar was highly touted coming out of high school. However, Sim is the type of player that Jans would have never recruited to NMSU; based on Jans' style of defense. Nevertheless, I think Lope fans and the Havoc will be very happy with Drew. The Lopes will become a more rugged, more edgy team with a much more discipline style. i.e. watch old Valpo video... with purple glasses. It might take a couple seasons but this is what the rest of WAC is in for down the road.

Until then Jans "is" THE MAN...

In a couple years, here comes Drew... Croy is lurking... and then down the road Gillispie crashes the party.

Gotta say, 12 is a baller on that 2018 team.

That would be AJ Harris (a former Ohio State transfer). And, those two videos were his sophomore (2018) and junior (2019) years at NMSU. He broken his finger prior to the start of his senior year (2019-20). Then as he returned to the team in late December (helping NMSU beat Mississippi State), he breaks his foot in the first WAC game. He only played three games last season. So, he (and NMSU) are currently petitioning the NCAA for a waiver for a sixth year of eligibility. If he gets it, you now understand why NMSU fans would be even more excited about the upcoming season. NMSU would have two starting point guards with Gilyard (who started in Harris' absence) and the return of Harris.
