Hard to argue 16-0 in conference play, haven’t lost to a WAC team in over a year.

31-0 over his last 31 WAC regular season games. Ho hum...

Nevermind that it's a JuCo.

Jans won a National Title at the JuCo level as the head coach at Kirkwood CC in Iowa. Did BCG win a natty? Never mind that it’s a JuCo.

Wasn't knocking Jan's but ok...

Lol I recommend you take a cruise through Las Cruces someday.. they're just thumping their chest because they're a medium fish in a little pond, and they've got more fans on here than any other school. Not even in the same zip code as UT, or UNM for that matter.

Notice I haven't knocked Jan's lengthy stay at the Juco level. Juco basketball aint no joke. Alot of top talent comes up through the Juco ranks, coaches included. Again though, BCG completely turned around Ranger, had them in the natty game last year, knocked off the No. 1 team, and won Coach of the Year. Was well on his way to another deep run when he took the Tarleton gig. There's a pattern of success with both coaches, its just that BCG has done it at the highest level. BCG>Jans

https://www.vaughtsviews.com/2019/05/rem...-the-year/

I actually agree with you. Both have been successful coaching no matter what division they’re in. They have that kind of pattern of success no matter where they go. BSG has coached at higher profile schools and Jans is just coming into his 5th year as the head of a D1 school. Jans is in a better situation right now being at NMSU than BSG at Tarleton. I know BSG will get Tarleton to a competitive level soon. The bad thing about these 2 is that to much success and they’re gone. I could only imagine the epic battles they could have 5-8 years from now if for some miracle they’re both at these schools.

Wasn’t knocking you, just pointing out recruiting to unknown armpits is possible if you’re a good coach.

I'd put Jan's over BCG due to D1 success with a non name brand school. Would certainly take either with no complaints though.

I don't think anyone thinks Jans is head-and-shoulders above the other coaches. Jans is the best coach in the WAC right now because he has has been WAC Coach of the Year all three seasons as head coach. Before Jans, the only NMSU coach to win the honor was Marvin Menzies in 2015. Jans has taken the Aggies to another level.

There are a number of good coaches in the WAC. Bryce Drew comes from a coaching family. His father is the College Hall of Fame for his coaching career. His brother was Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2020. He was great at Valpo, but it didn't go well at Vandy. That does not make him a bad coach. Gillispie is a fellow Bobcat and I wish him the best at Tarleton. He wins everywhere and I think he was an excellent hire. But he has had issues. He is a workaholic and an alcoholic, which is not a good combination. Hopefully, he has learned from his past mistakes.

Croy, Judkins and Hayford are proven coaches. They are not name coaches but they have had a lot of coaching success. They are building their programs and are at different stages than Jans is at. Jans is probably a sweet sixteen trip away from being hired at another school and then the conference power structure could change.

RE: Rank the WAC men's Basketball Head Coaches...
The point I was making that ranking Jans behind any coach in the WAC is absurd based on the latest performance by all coaches. Aggie fans have heard this before when Majerle was made coach of GCU and they had Colangelo, their great fan base, money blah blah blah. The media for 3-4 years picked them to dethrone NMSU every year and every year they did squat. Other WAC teams here and there have done well a year or two and faded away. Even the years Utah Valley and Bakersfield won the regular season title NMSU won the tourney. NMSU has dominated the WAC for years and NMSU is always has been a contender in any conference in basketball that we have been in. Jans as of late has taken it to another level and your boy Gillespie may have been a good coach in his day but just like Tim Floyd who went to Utep with an amazing resume he was past his prime. My guess is Gillespie has seen his better days. I'm sure he will elevate Tarletons play to be equal to GCU, Seattle and the rest of the mediocre WAC but to say he is a better coach than Jans is crazy and ranking him as the 3rd best coach in the WAC is comical and delusional based on facts, not emotion. Don't be sad that we[/u] sweep Tarleton and its better coach for the next 3-4 years at least, maybe more if Jans ends up sticking around for awhile. It also doesn't help Gillespie he has the stench of Utep in his coaching career.

He took Vandy to the dance his first year, in SEC. In. The. SEC.
Back to the point of my 1. BCG and 2. Drew having SEC and BIG 12 ecperience. Two of the toughest conferences in all the land. I imagine they both are very confident about their chances in the WAC. It will all come down to recruiting. Jans will have the clear adavantage in that dept. 2020-21, but we'll see in a couple of years. Both BCG and Drew will surprise this year though. A couple of big upsets for BCG, Drew might push for the title.

How many seeds does the SEC average every year though? You probably make the NCAA tourny just by being in the top half of the SEC. As others have said all of that experience at big schools is great but its easy to draw kids to power programs....

Yes, BCG has taken multiple schools in name brand conferences to the tournament multiple times his first year. Not going to take anything away from that as it's no small feat. However, as others have pointed out Jan's has had success at a program with less resources than most of the programs BCG has coached. Don't act like Jan's isn't near BCGs level, Jan's has done a lot with a little bit.

Also, I've noticed you're thinking Tarleton has been disrespected because we aren't getting any respect for our D2 success. We're moving to D1, a bigger challenge. Hopefully we can carry that success but until we make some noise, no one cares about how we were in D2.

"A couple big upsets for BCG, Drew might push for the title" Are you talking about this upcoming season? If you are, slow down. I mean, certainly I'd love that but right now let's just worry about getting up to speed and developing a competitive program.

RE: Rank the WAC men's Basketball Head Coaches...
I have no doubt BCG will have Tarleton State playing at a respectable D1 mid-major level with three years. This coaching situation for Gillispie is similar to when he took over the UTEP program; but on a tougher scale. Keep in mind, BCG didn't have success as UTEP until his second year. And, that was with more resources, better facilities, and better personnel returning from the previous coach. The first season laid the groundwork for the program he planned to build. Keep in mind, BCG is older now. Tarleton State's resources are still at a D2 level. And, their basketball facility needs to be improved considerably. BCG will have Tarleton State competitive in most WAC games this season. He is too good a coach not to. However, his roster is essentially made up of JC role players and freshmen. They will play hard for him but the freshmen will need time to develop. Right now, their is no one on the Texan roster who could start for NMSU. Gillispie will need a full year of recruiting to "start" the process of making his program a WAC contender. Next year's recruiting class will be a good indicator if BCG still has it as a head coach. If he brings in players comparable in talent to CBU, GCU, and ultimately NMSU, then Texan fans will something to crow about for the future.

I think we will have something to crow about, but then again I'm admittedly biased.

You have said this a couple of times. Are you talking about your OOC schedule? Or are you talking about the WAC? If it’s the WAC, other than beating NMSU, no other win would be considered a big upset. It would not surprise me one iota if BGC beat any WAC team. It also would surprise me if he lost to any of them.

OOC and a bid-seeking WAC team. A good guess would be NMSU, but NMSU might not be the best team in the WAC come late December. I predict Stephenville will be a dangerous place to play late in the season.

Those were LSC coaches? Or were you saying that by being D2 we wouldn't know anything about any D1 coaches?

My apologies to wisdomgymrat. I was mad at one Tarleton poster and took it out on him. Disregard my flippant post...

Just remember Itinerant doesn't speak for us all

I apologized and I didn't direct anything to you. I already acknowledged all that you are saying, no need to continue on.

You're a douche bag man.

Nevermind that it's a JuCo.

Jans won a National Title at the JuCo level as the head coach at Kirkwood CC in Iowa. Did BCG win a natty? Never mind that it’s a JuCo.

Wasn't knocking Jan's but ok...

Wasn’t knocking you, just pointing out recruiting to unknown armpits is possible if you’re a good coach.

Ah, gotcha. Anyone that can recruit a JuCo isn't someone that should be overlooked, especially if it's in Ranger.

This may be your most insightful post ever, “coach”.
