Early-Summer "Way-Too-Early" WAC men's basketball standings prediction...
1. New Mexico State - Jans has stockpiled talent on top of talent. As long as bad team chemistry doesn't derail this team's run for another championship, the Aggie freight train should blow through the WAC competition. GCU being the only obstruct in the way.
2. Grand Canyon - Drew will give the GCU roster the stability in coaching that Majerle's emotional style lacked. The Lopes will be vastly improved from last season. With McGlothan doing most of the low post dirty work, I expect a WAC POTY effort from Lever.
3. UT Rio Grande Valley - Hill has steadily built his roster adding more talent than he loses each season. They have size and athleticism. With Levi, they will be a steady veteran team.
4. Seattle - I think the addition of the CCSF trio will fill many of the holes in Hayford's roster. Seattle will only go as far as its offense will take them.
5. California Baptist - If Milan Acquaah returns, they will go up in the rankings. At the moment Croy's team has a lot of size and potential but they have no proven scorers.
6. Dixie State - Dixie State returns most of its starting line up. We will see if Judkins recruited enough talent leading into this transition year to finish this high.
7. Tarleton State - With a big turnover in the Tarleton State's roster expected, the only reason I rank the Texans this high is because of BCG. Tarleton State needs more size.
8. Utah Valley - Madsen only returns two players from last season. He brought in some good players but has no leadership, no depth, and no established team chemistry.
9. Chicago State - Chicago State should be more competitive this season but I'm not convinced Irvin can coach them out of the cellar.

Agree Pistol, if Milan returns I can see CBU as #3 in a close fight for #2. The rest of the rankings look good to me. Conference ranking around 22.

RE: Early-Summer "Way-Too-Early" WAC men's basketball standings prediction...
I believe this season the WAC will be much more competitive than last season. Good coaching changes for some teams and new teams ready to make their mark. I don't think the standings are going to lopsided this year.

New Mexico State is still the top dog.

CBU, GCU, Seattle and Rio Grande are going to battle it out for the second spot. Those games are going to be incredible.

UVU is always tough at home. They are at the top of the bottom half.
I expect the new comers to make some noise. T State will pull off a major upset this season (BCG factor). Dixie State will also pull out a close one from the upper four. Chi State WILL win at least 4 WAC games this season.

1. New Mexico State
2. CBU
3. UT Rio Grande Valley
4. Seattle
5. GCU
6. UVU
7. Tarleton State
8. Dixie state
9. Chicago State

Anything is possible and everyone is entitled to an opinion. But unless Milan Acquaah returns Cal Baptist will be hard pressed to finish as high as second. If Acquaah leaves Croy will have no returning starters and will have lost all but Sophomores-to-be 6'5 Tre Armstrong and 6'6 Reed Nottage from the 2019-20 team; that finished second in the conference. Cal Baptist will be lucky to finish in the upper half of the conference this season. On the other hand, Grand Canyon returns three starters (Blacksher, Dixon, and Lever) and has a pretty decent recruiting class coming in.

As of today...
Chicago State - 5 starters returning (Xavier Johnson, Rajeir Jones, Andrew Lewis, Ke'Sean Davis, Solomon Hunt)
Dixie State - 4 starters returning (Dason Youngblood, Frank Staine, Hunter Schofield, Jarod Greene)
New Mexico State - 3 starters returning (Evan Gilyard, Jabari Rice, Johnny McCants)
Grand Canyon - 3 starters returning (Jovan Blacksher Jr., Mikey Dixon, Alessandro Lever)
UT Rio Grande Valley - 3 starters returning (Javon Levi, Quinton Johnson II, Sean Rhea)
Tarleton State - 3 starters returning (Devin Bethely, Isaiah Range, Clashon Gaffney)
Seattle University - 1 starter returning (Riley Grigsby)
California Baptist - 0 starters returning
Utah Valley - 0 starters returning

I don't like to do these because there are so many unknowns. It is clear that NMSU is #1. It is clear that CSU is #9. I think UTRGV is probably #2. I don't care how much turnover Croy had, he can coach and I would think CBU will finish in the top half of the conference. I have been very, very disappointed with Hayford. I thought he was a better coach but his teams have been major disappointments. UVU gives NMSU fits every year and is the last WAC team to beat NMSU in Las Cruces. They came within a Rice buzzer beater of doing it again last year.

AJ Harris and Clayton Henry were the Aggie starters in 2018-19. And, would have been the starters last season in 2019-20 if not for their injuries. However, once sidelined Buchanan and then later Gilyard stepped into Harris' starting PG role. And, Queen took over for Henry on the wing. So, yes once Henry is full healthy he will resume his starting wing guard role. And, if Harris receives a waiver for one more year of eligibility, NMSU will essentially have two starting point guards. The only starting position in question at NMSU is who will take over for Aurrecoechea at the post? NMSU will have 6'10 Will McNair, 6'9 Mayan Kiir (in December), and maybe 7'0 Jacob Tryon if he gets a waiver or graduated by this fall. Otherwise, McCants could slide over to the post and either 6'9 Wilfried Likayi or 6'7 Donnie Tillman, if he gets a waiver, could fill in at power forward. Nevertheless, yes, in theory, NMSU has 4 starters returning; even though Henry didn't play last season.

If Harris gets the waiver someone currently on the roster is losing their scholarship. Harris would make it 14 scholarship players which is 1 more than allowed. So who would lose their spot for him?

This looks pretty good at this point in time. CBU has added size, shooting, and athleticism. They need a proven scorer, which is the role Acquaah would fill. With the NBA combine cancelled, the NBA G League Elite Camp cancelled and no summer league, I think Acquaah will stay in school. If that is the case, then CBU moves up to 2nd place.

Don’t care as long as we are competitive with one or two upsets for this season. Rebuilding the program with a new coach and the move up will take a few seasons. “Just happy to be here” is where I am at

RE: Early-Summer "Way-Too-Early" WAC men's basketball standings prediction...
I see it more like this for our first year in.
Tarleton will scratch & claw for at least the 4 or 5 spot, no less.
There will be a few "upsets" in Stephenville. Guaranteed.

1. NMSU
2. GCU
3. CBU
4. SEATTLE
5. TARLETON
6. UTRGV
7. DIXIE STATE
8. UVU
9. CHI STATE

I wouldn't be surprised honestly. CBU upset NMSU their first game against them. They finished second in the WAC their second year. I assume Tarleton and Dixie State could pull something similar. I think they both will improve drastically in season 2.

RE: Early-Summer "Way-Too-Early" WAC men's basketball standings prediction...
When researching the WAC coaches, I found it interesting that Lew Hill and Lance Irvin were on Melvin Watkin's staff when he was fired at Texas A&M. Billy Gillispie was hired as Texas A&M new head coach shortly after and cleaned house to bring in his own staff. After Leaving Texas A&M, Lance Irvin (and former Texas A&M head coach Watkins) landed on Quinn Snyder's staff at Missouri for one season (2005-06). At the time, current NMSU Athletic Director Mario Moccia was the Associate AD at Missouri. During that 2005-06 season, Quinn Snyder was fired and Watkins finished out the season as the interim Head Coach. After that season, Watkins and Irvin were let go. After a short stint at SMU as an assistant, in 2008, Lance Irvin joined Chris Lowery's staff at Southern Illinois. Mario Moccia was the AD there. Lance Irvin stay on Lowery's Staff until 2012 when Moccia (Southern Illinois) fired Lowery. Irvin left D1 until he was hired by Chicago State two years ago. About the Same time, Gillispie also left D1 after a disastrous stay at Texas Tech. Lew Hill was also in the Big 12 on Lon Kruger's staff at Oklahoma at the time.

Additionally, Rick Croy and Jon Judkins have their history while competing in the PacWest conference. Croy (at CBU) upended Judkins' (at Dixie State) dominance of the conference; until CBU joined the WAC.

So, now Lew Hill and Lance Irvin are established WAC head coaches now coaching against each other and against Johnny come lately Billy Gillispie. Also, Jon Judkins now has another opportunity to coach against Rick Croy. And, Mario Moccia, who is very familiar with Lance Irvin career is the AD at NMSU. A lot of careers have crossed paths.

Ok, after much debate and ballyhoo, not to mention an entirely flipped Tarleton roster designed to run n' gun, this is my updated prediction...

Lol serious about the 3&4 (toss up), my bias gives the edge to BCG.
Yes, 1&2 swap was just to 05-stirthepot because suggesting anything less than NMSU total world domination is going to ruffle some feathers.

Well played, sir.....well played.

I have a feeling the coaching at GCU and Tarleton are going to have an effect on where they end up in the standings. While I do believe NMSU is going to end up (barring the injury bug again) at the top, I do not believe it will be with an unblemished record. I'm also excited about the tournament as I feel like there are probably at least 2 teams (probably more) that could take the title from NMSU. As an AGGIE fan, I hope it doesn't happen, but it does make for more interest.

GO AGGIES!!!!
