I'm looking forward to see how he continues to develop, you could see the potential at times last season. Dude is just naturally gifted in a way you don't see very often. Especially with our OL recruits.

Vann was very good last year. One of the reasons the defensive line was our strongest group. With the depth they have coming back, it will be hard for any of them to put up crazy numbers.

I hope they have him working on nothing but facing inside moves in pass protection.

Yep, he was getting turned into a pretzel by basic twists and inside spin moves by the end of the year. I guy with his length and leverage shouldn't have issues with anything on the interior since he'd be able to get hand on someone so quickly off the ball.

So the consensus is that we'll be solid at the tackles and center, right? If so, seems like there's a good chance we'll see the best offensive line play of the Fickell era. That could definitely help make up for a potentially so-so receivers group.

RE: Predicted Depth Chart 2020 at RB/WR/TE
The Cats finished last season in conference rankings [overall ncaa ranks] for the following metrics...

3 [40] Total Defense
1 [24] Scoring Defense

10 [80] Total Offense
7 [60] Scoring Offense

It would stand to reason that in 2020 the defense would play near the level of 2019 or a tad lower if the LB core is not as strong. So, call it a wash overall. On the flip, I believe the offense will improve from 2019 based on better Oline depth, higher WR talent [on paper] and a Junior QB who should be 100% healthy and playing in the same system for the third year. Of course, the rub on this board is the latter factor. I'm not going to travel down that road for this post but I don't see where the offense really has a drop-off going into 2020 outside of maybe no Truck Warren [easy money] on the roster. The RB and TE rooms remain in good stock. Imagine if the offense can play in the upper third of the league statistically to go along with another year of solid dee...

Not sure, and maybe I have higher expectations, but with the depth on Defense, I think we will be MSU good, and flat shut people down. Fight me. 04-cheers

I admit I'm taking a moderate approach so they'll end up 12-0. 04-cheers

Yeah, I think you'll see a bit better play from Ridder simply from him not needing to manage the edges of the line collapsing on every play like last season.

RE: Predicted Depth Chart 2020 at RB/WR/TE
I think best case scenario in keeping Prater happy is having Ridder start this year, even if that means Bryant transfers. Next year, have Prater and Ridder battle for the spot and best QB gets it, then hand the reigns to Prater for his final 3 years (assuming he redshirts this year).

I know and understand coaches aren't looking to keep a freshman happy when determining who starts at QB but strictly speaking as a fan, that's why I think I prefer to see Ridder behind center this year. If Bryant starts and does well, does he hold the spot for 3 years keeping Prater on the bench and then considering leaving?

Also from what players like Sopko are saying, it sounds like Ridder was ridiculously banged up last year. 100% Ridder is far better than what we saw last year and having experienced receivers and a better O-line should help. I don't think our WR room is that weak with the additions we brought in (another year developed for Pierce, Tucker and Jackson, along with ND transfer Michael Young and Arkansas transfer Jones, and quality freshmen in Thompson, Bell, and Scott.) and the only question mark is at LB where I trust Freeman and having studs on the line and in the backfield should help.

if that is true, the the coaching staff really effed it last season. All the more reason to start Bryant and yet they didn't. 03-banghead03-banghead03-banghead

If you remember, he took a vicious hit to the upper arm/shoulder in the Marshall game towards the end of the 1st half. That was the first play that I thought of after reading that last post.

I'm sure Ridder's injuries had a lot to do with his performance in 2019. That said, I still want an open QB competition between him and Bryant. Bryant deserves to either get a shot to compete, or the ability to transfer somewhere that he can compete.

I think Chad mentioned in a podcast that Ridder was injured in the OSU game last season. I think it was that hit by Chase young as Ridder was going out of bounds. Ridder went to the bench for a play or two. The most obvious injury was the USF game. Sounds like Ridder took multiple injuries throughout last season

I do my best to avoid these QB threads because I'm convinced the incumbent isn't good enough but

1. A running QB either needs to have the size to take the hits (Cam Newtown) or be skilled at avoiding them (Lamar). Between injuries in the OSU game, USF game, VT bowl Ridder doesn't appear to be either.
2. Even as a Ridder critic who thinks most of this is just making excuses for normal wear and tear that all QBs go through he was clearly damaged vs USF and Temple. Either the staff was extremely stubborn to stick with a guy who couldn't throw or Bryant isn't the talent we've been lead to believe

I think he got the nod because he could run. That line was a sieve in pass protection and if we didn’t have a QB who could run for his life when needed or one who could call designed runs to keep the D honest we would have gotten slaughtered.

Bryant might not be as good a runner as Ridder but it's not like he can't run, especially if it is solely to keep the defense honest. i love 99% of what this coaching staff has accomplished and continues to do. This might literally be the only thing that they have done that i completely hate.
