A NOTE ABOUT MICHIGAN
Drafted Average: 4.2 per year
Top247 Average: 4.8 per year
Ohio gets most of the attention in the Midwest in terms of talent production, but Michigan produces its share of elite prospects. The state has also consistently come close to – if not outright beat – its NFL estimates. The 2020 draft class saw several under-the-radar recruits get drafted. Those include Michigan State walk-on Kenny Willekes, Mike Danna (the nation’s No. 2,005 overall player) and Iowa standout Michael Ojemudia, who ranked as the No. 38 overall player in Michigan and yet ranked No. 1,795th nationally in the 2015 class. For perspective, the No. 38 overall player in Texas for the 2015 cycle slotted as a four-star recruit.
This is not to say Michigan should have anywhere close to the number of Top247 players as Texas every year, but Michigan should likely be given higher consideration on an annual basis when it comes to Top247 prospects.
“Michigan is a bit frustrating for me because it’s where I’m based and I cover it thoroughly,” Trieu said. “At the same, there have been some guys over the year that have been really successful that haven’t been obvious: Eric Fischer or even a Desmond King. The state has shown that it’s deeper than just the guys who go to Michigan and Michigan State. Those three MAC schools have done a really good job turning out talent.
“The state sometimes gets known for just having Detroit. But it’s the guys off the beaten path that sometimes get missed. I don’t know exactly what the reason is. But I think some it is it’s got one major metropolitan region that gets most of the attention in Detroit.”
