In case you haven't notice.....
There is a lot of talk from several SBC fan sites regarding a possible merger with some Conference USA members. In case you haven't noticed, most all of this talk is coming from SBC fans and school sites. There is lttle to no chance a merger of any sorts will take place. The question I have is why are SBC fans flaming the fire so to speak if they really feel our conference is a better conference? It makes me think much of our bravado is wishful thinking. I know that the supposed catalyst is saving money during these tough times but this whole discussion is one sided. If the Conf USA members are feeling any pain or desire to make changes, they are not showing it and no school desires to raise the issue. Its time to move on from this subject and continue to build the SBC.

Message board fans are not the ones making these decisions. Also most of the articles posted here discussing it have been from CUSA schools.

I too often wonder why some fans of SBC and CUSA schools love to hate each other, but still have a strong desire to see our two conferences merge. Personally, I think both conferences are fine just as they are.

Because it's logical to share a conference with a similar school 100-300 miles away vs. 800, especially when the trade off on the field/court is minimal.

SBC fans are simply talking about it because it's interesting, and also entertaining because we're all bored.

The multiple articles that are being discussed though are coming from C-USA sources (except the one from the Cajuns AD).

Just because SBC fans discuss it, doesn't mean we have a strong desire for our schools to make something happen.

Pretty sure the consensus here among SBC fans is that we all like our situation and have a mutual respect for each other.

Ok, have you seen/heard any AD's or Presidents from USA schools wanting a merger?

I haven't seen an article from a USA school desiring a merger of any sort. Wish you could link me. On the other hand, SBC fans seem very high on the idea. I can believe the bored comment, think we all are but also think its time for a good dose of realism to be expressed. The only articles I have seen is from smaller town newspaper looking for discussion.

To chime in on this...

They don't outright say "merger"... but yes, there have been interviews with AD's or President's from MT, Marshall, and ODU where they have mentioned that there needs to be a re-structuring. ODU's admin has outright said that Conference USA can't sustain what they're doing economically.

I try to stay informed and have not seen these articles of which you speak. Have seen some local newspaper hoping for a story.

Was there any SBC mention or discussion? This is where the problem begins.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

Without even bringing up what CUSA AD's have been saying, why are articles from CUSA beat writers not proof enough that CUSA schools are clamoring for realignment, but threads on the Sun Belt board are proof that we are? You're being a little obtuse here.

In the past (pre COVID) Doug Gillin has mentioned that it doesn't make sense for our teams to drive to Charlotte to fly out to San Marcos while the UNCC teams are also flying out to El Paso.

That's not an exact quote, but you get the gist of what he's saying.

Hard to believe your being genuine about this. just about every Sun Belt poster have long been consistently saying they dont think there will be a merger/complete realignment, but just to take part in the discussion they have been giving their personal preference for their school. lots have also said they hope the current Sun Belt stays as is, and let cusa figure out their own mess.
Also, every newspaper, small or large has a shortage of sports stories right now. they all will write about a topic that could potentially effect fan bases of 24 or more schools just to gets clicks.
as for newspapers from cusa programs, go search from odu, Charlotte, Marshall, or usm. I dont think you tried very hard if you say you havent seen any of them.

RE: In case you haven't notice.....
I don't think I have seen an article from a Sun Belt team or town indicating any need or desire for realignment with CUSA.

I have seen several articles from the CUSA side though. I have also seen several threads created here and on our own board in response to those articles. So, to say that the realignment talk is originating on the Sun Belt side is just not true.

Also, as the better conference, if there truly is dissatisfaction on the CUSA side, why wouldn't we discuss it? We are potentially in a position to bring in 2 of the better teams from a failing conference and improve our own in the process. We take 2 of the best teams from CUSA (that are already in our footprint), and we close the gap between us and the Mountain West/AAC.

So, to sum it up, CUSA teams/fan bases/towns are unhappy with the current CUSA model and footprint. Sun Belt teams/fan bases/towns are satisfied and enjoying the growth in strength we've seen. So, the Sun Belt is naturally having conversations to capitalize on the failing CUSA.

Took the time to find all of the links. There are some others I can't find at the moment where ODU's Wood Selig was interviewed.

So here you go:

* In THIS article from 2020, CUSA's financial burdens during COVID-19 are discussed with various CUSA admin.

* In THIS article from 2017, an un-named CUSA AD says "Conference USA's current financial model is unsustainable", with the article mentioning CUSA has to change. MTSU AD Chris Massaro also said "It's inevitable that there's going to be some kind of consolidation among the Group of Five," he said. "I don't think we're there yet, but eventually we will be." ODU's president John Broderick, in that same article, said he isn't necessarily in favor of a merger, but agrees it needs to be considered. He said "Anything that would help our student-athletes and is more responsive to budgetary concerns deserves a look."

* THIS article from 2020, is from a roundtable of a consulting firm specialist/former AD about the CUSA model and how it can't last in its current form.

* THIS article, from 2020, is a very interesting one from the James Madison AD, talking about how COVID-19 is stretching money thin and that he's heard through the "grapevine" that there is discussion about what will happen among certain conferences in regards to their future. It also mentions that ODU had an independent study commissioned, which led to them shutting down some of their sports programs. The same study also "concluded that ODU must make a decision on conference membership to reduce travel expenses, cut down missed class time and generate more fan interest." East Carolina's AD also says "I think the TV networks obviously would want to hold the conference alignment as they are for football and men’s and women’s basketball. But I think it is time to discuss that every other sport go to a regional-type format where we are playing schools that are close to us. Our athletes could play a lot of schools on a road trip that takes place maybe even in the same day, and I think those are discussions we should start having in earnest.”

And these articles are just opinion pieces that are originating from CUSA beat writers, and not from SBC sites as you mentioned:

* It's past time for radical change in Conference USA
* CUSA, Sun Belt Realignment needed for benefit of membership
* Conference USA is no longer a good fit for ODU
* C-USA should dissolve or get creative to survive
* CUSA, Sun Belt merger can't come fast enough
* Realignment is inevitable for Conference USA
* Conference USA & Sun Belt could combine in pandemic recovery

There really is no problem in the first place. It's just normal discussion among message board posters.

When you mix in all the mentions from CUSA admin, plus their beat writer articles hoping for something to happen, it's fair to take all of those outlets and discuss what we think might be realistic or far-fetched.

Dude, there are no fewer that 13 threads on the front page of CUSA board on this subject.

Take your trolling elsewhere.
