We can work it out through private messaging if you like but for the sake of others, I don’t think this discussion needs to be carried out on these boards.

I think we can all agree that personal attacks have no place on these boards and those who choose to engage in personal attacks (you know who you are but I sure won’t say) are a bunch of horse’s asses.

Honest question, because I have no idea. Who is our moderator? Have we ever had one? And are they a JMU alum? Would hate to think a rival school moderator has to take care of our business.

hburg is the moderator here, and personally, I believe he does a fine job. He is truly a believer in our First Amendment. How miserable would this board be if we had someone micromanaging everything we all say to suit himself or herself? Mark Zuckerberg much?

Short of personal threats, I see no need for censorship of any kind. But, then, I am also a believer in our First Amendment, authored by our namesake.

Not exactly what the 1st amendment is about, moderators on a private message board are not the government. If you let someone spew opinions at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment and the site ends up losing traffic and thus advertising revenue then that's anti-capitalism. You a commie?

Seriously though, someone message GTS and he'll set up elections for additional moderators. Most boards have several as it's a voluntary position and people have lives. I'm just a troll here though so it's up to you guys.

That is EXACTLY what the First Amendment is about. Freedom of speech. Ever hear of that?

Actually, the commie position is censorship. That's what commies do. Commies don't advocate free speech. Now, who's the commie?

"If you let someone spew opinions at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment?" Really? You mean like you just did? You want things censored that you don't like but you want to convince us that what you don't like is what "everyone else" doesn't like.

There are things that bjk and Hyper say here that I don't agree with, but NEVER would I support them being censored for any of it. There are many threads here that I have no interest in. I simply don't bother to click on those threads. Freedom of the mouse is so sweet! You should try it.

Hey, I know, let's allow the DDCB (Dukes Domain Censorship Board) approve every single post before it goes up. What fun, huh? It could take days to get a post published. And, members of the DDCB, working feverishly to keep up with a busy board like this, would have to quit their jobs and become full-time censors, making the site we enjoy for free very costly, very slow, and not much fun.

I also think we should be required to use a cam when submitting our posts for approval. If you are not wearing a purple cap, no approval.

Just for clarification, the 1st amendment is about government restricting use of free speech, religion, assembly, and free press.
Last time I checked, our message board wasn't run by the government. Therefore the 1st amendment does not apply in this case.
It's the same reason an establishment can kick you out for saying something offensive and not be in trouble for doing so.

With respect to this message board, it's the moderators call, not the government. Therefore they can delete ANYTHING they want. Or they choose not to delete anything they want. Either way, they are not violating any "freedom of speech".

Come on, folks. You are smarter than this.

RE: Are you buying 2020 football season tickets?
“Freedom of speech” doesn’t include the right to come on my property or inside my house and scream at me. Or the right for several people to do so and scream at each other.

If people here want to debate various topics on appropriately labeled threads in designated areas, no problem. But when it begins to spill into nearly all the active “JMU Sports” threads, it is a problem. Nobody wants to live in a trashy house, and that’s what this has started to feel like here. And I’m equally annoyed by BOTH sides that insist on quarreling here over non JMU, general society issues. It solves nothing, is very non persuasive, and makes people just want to leave.

I knew that someone would use that as an excuse to censor. Mark Zuckerberg has been leaning on that argument. "Hey, Fascistbook is a private company. We are allowed to censor anything we want."

President Trump recently signed an executive order to address that, which has to do with Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (GMAFB). I am very aware of this because I am an internet publisher and Big Tech has wrecked businesses like mine via its censorship, leaning on Section 230.

Our Constitution indeed says that the government will make no laws "abridging the freedom of speech." Yet, they have. Section 230 permits Facebook, Twitter, and Google to censor. Therefore, the government is complicit and in violation of the First Amendment.

Face it, these are very trying times. COVID, cities burnt and looted, chaos everywhere. These things affect us and they affect JMU sports, which we are all here to discuss.

The title of this thread is "Are you buying 2020 football season tickets?" I guess respondents can reply with simply a yes or no, without elaborating so as to not piss you off. My advice is when you see that bolded title on your Dukes Domain page, indicating that there are new posts there, use your mousey thing to steer your cursor away from it, thereby reducing the stress in your life and making you a much happier person.

I think it's only a small number of people, but it's becoming almost unreadable. Don't know what the fix is because the people who keep getting into arguments completely unrelated to JMU aren't self-policing.

I'm honestly not even checking in enough anymore to know exactly who it is. I just know every time I go in and click a thread, there's a moment where I'm like "Ugh, not again..." and just leave the site.

Oh, never mind. In my last post I said I couldn't figure out exactly who the people ruining this board are, but here's a good example.

Why are you posting this kinda stuff on a sports board?
I don't really care, but asking seemed nicer than saying, "Stop it." So I figure you can answer then somebody else can say, "Cool. Stop please."

Seriously though, stop it. Please.

This is the winner right here. You could just apply "it solves nothing, very non persuasive" part to the majority of people who write thousands of words about politics on the internet. However, if somebody wants to go nuts in off topic or their own Facebook page, that's cool - do your thing. It's completely tone deaf and disrespectful to do it on a sports message board though. (And I'd go even further to say that I always found JMU to be a unified place where people rarely had trash arguments like this in real life, so I don't get why a few folks are bringing such negativity to a JMU-based online community.)

Alright, I've replied three times. I'm out. Probably won't fix anything anyway, but I felt like noting the lameness instead of just Xing out might help one or two people reflect on their internet behavior.
