RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
One other thought - sometimes the tall thin kids aren’t prototypical back to the basket rebounders and they bring other things to the table- would have to see more on this recruit but maybe he has a handle and could be a match up problem. Wooden isn’t 6’10” but I think he’s a legit 6’9” and has a good wingspan. He’s not too thin and probably heavier than this kid but certainly not big yet I think he can cause some problems out there with his length and versatility.

Sorry, but your point is still, ummm, pointless.

They are kids. Who often grow vertically fast and in spurts, leaving little time to fill out that sudden extended frame.

Maybe you don’t know who this guy is :

He’s Chet Holmgren. Looks pretty thin huh? He’s 7’0”, 190 pounds.

He’s also the #1 recruit in the class of 2021, wanted by duke, Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina and every other top p5 program in the country.

Good for Chet and whatever program that successfully recruits and signs him. He’s still a skinny stick. Hope he has a marvelous career and doesn’t get hurt when he plays with the big guys. 04-cheers

Oh, and the “point” of a sports board is to share opinions. Just thought I’d share that “point” because apparently you didn’t get that memo. 07-coffee3

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
Mensah was listed at 6'10, 210lbs as a College Sophomore, and I don't think I've seen people questioning his size. Here we are talking about 6'10 200lbs as a high school Junior. 10 pounds difference over 3 years. I'm pretty confident JMU dining and strength training can add that or more in a year or two.

We’re so sports deprived that I’m actually looking forward to the typical arguments/comments for the upcoming seasons...

“We need to run the ball more”
Johnson vs Moloney
“If we lose to Coppin State I’m done watching for the season”
“Matt Lewis shoots way too much”
The occasional DukemanX article sprinkled in

We’re almost there (hopefully) 07-coffee3

Yep. You're never going to hear Horny say, "Yeah, you made a good point. I stand corrected. Thanks."

I don't recall what Ralph Sampson weighed in high school, but it was well under 200 pounds, I'm sure, especially as a junior. I'm guessing 180 pounds. His high school nickname was "Stick." That didn't stop every major college in America from wanting him.

So you’re guessing what Sampson weighed, but you seem confident his nickname was “Stick.” Yet somehow stating the obvious that a 6’10” 200# potential recruit is “skinny as a stick” has you worked up. 03-lmfao

Obviously I’m totally blind because this 6’10” 200# potential recruit must be great...and why do we know this? Because his defenders are comparing him to KD and Sampson! And as a mid-major JMU would be lucky to get any player over 6’9” tall, even if he is skinny.

Of course, nobody has seen any video of this guy playing, but by golly he’s tall! And skinny, which makes him just like KD and Sampson, and this other recruit named Chet that Kentucky, Duke and other blue blood MBB programs are hot about. And who knows, maybe he’s got a great handle, or outside shot, and he’s only a junior, and so-on and so-forth, and perhaps he’s only going through an awkward spurt of an adolescent period of growth because I used to eat a lot and I couldn’t gain weight.

Hilarious! He’s skinny guys. Get over it. Maybe his nickname is also “Stick.”
Is there any evidence that he is in fact not skinny? <crickets>

I don’t know if he’s a player or not. Let’s see some proof. In the meantime calm down. I’d love to be tall and skinny, but tall and skinny doesn’t necessarily make him a player that can help JMU.

That’s helpful, even though it’s only a brief workout. Hopefully we’ll get some game video. He does have broad shoulders as noted, and his legs aren’t toothpicks.

Anybody know his back story and how he got in the States from Senegal?

Par for the Horny course. Just bullsh!t.

I'm "guessing" Ralph weighed 180 pounds because I didn't personally weigh him. I know you can probably tell someone's exact weight by convincing them to sit on your face, but I don't have that skill. It must be great to be the awesome Horny who knows everything, including everyone's exact weight to the ounce and how well nourished they are.

And, I'm not "confident" that Sampson's high school nickname was "Stick," I know damned well it was. I grew up in the area. If Jim Knicely is on this board, please confirm.

You called a kid who isn't really skinny "beyond skinny, and borders on malnutrition." You got owned on it! Rule #1 for getting out of a hole: STOP DIGGING!

I agree. I am stoked to see this team in action. The Dukes are going to be VERY good this year. Well done, Coach B!

The issue with the HCLR era was not the recruiting, it was the coaching. I thought Lou brought in some good players for the CAA, but he couldn't put them in the right position to succeed.

That said, I am also excited for this years basketball team and to see what guys like Lewis (assuming he comes back), Wooden, and Christmas can do with some better X's and O's.

Agree - funny while Lou was here most seemed to think his recruiting was solid.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
Lou recruited good athletes but I am not sure they were good basketball players. Their record would suggest they were not but maybe it was all coaching...maybe both.

On the Duke Club Zoom call, Byington mentioned recruiting small players. He went on to say that a smart player isn’t necessarily one that excels in the classroom but the player is smart on the court. This type of player reacts instinctively to the changing situations of the game very quicker. He said Cremins always told him that if he recruited smart players, they would always make him look like a smart coach.

The down fall for Lou imo is that although his players were good in the classroom and athletic, they weren’t real smart on the court. They also lacked mental toughness as evidenced by their missed free throws and inability to close games out.

Byington can add at least another 10 wins next year if his team makes a high percentage of their free throws and holds on to the lead late in games. Those were two things that led to most of JMUs losses.

One of the big concerns for Rowe being fired was that Rowe was such a good recruiter. I think in Coach B's short time here he has blown that argument out of the water.
I will say this about Rowe's program- he brought in players with great character. The program was clean.
I don't blame Rowe's recruiting as the problem. He brought in some very talented guys. The problem was always coaching. He was never able to escalate the players he brought in and work as a powerful unit. Players made the same mistakes on day 1 as they were making years later.
For the players that chose to stay, I expect to see them much better than they were a year ago. I think Lewis has the potential to be a star this season.

Reminds me a lot of how Billy Donovan and Thad Matta always talked about recruiting. I can't find it now but remember a great article a while back(think it was after they faced each other in the 2007 championship) where they talked a lot about often preferring high basketball IQ over AAU stars. Guys who know how to prepare for specific matchups and play a team game rather than just how to put up big numbers in several games all in one day.

If Byington turns out to be as good as we're all hoping it'll be interesting to see how Lou's guys like Christmas, Wooden, and Harvey develop and even how guys like Matt and Zach do in their senior year.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
I’m sure there will be noticeable differences in game planning, system/style, substitutions etc but I think the biggest difference will be intangible. I really believe that Lou and the guys wanted to win but they just didn’t know how to and that confidence to win a game down the stretch that a coach exhibits is something the players can sense and feel. These guys have to learn how to win and their new coach already knows how to. Unfortunately Lous was trying to figure that part out and never did despite his best efforts.
