Now that's what I call smack talk! Not only does he call them "Lafayette" instead of "Louisiana", but he also implies that they should want to "move up" to CUSA.

I can't wait to hear the Louisiana AD's response. I doubt any school in the Sunbelt considers the current version of CUSA to be a step up.

Ehhh. The AD is just doing his job. His bosses and/or donors probably consider it part of the job for him to say things like that.

It's probably in the instruction manual for new athletic directors: "Whenever appropriate, answer a question by saying [Our School] [has the best football and basketball teams / is in the best conference / has the largest scoreboard / has the best lacrosse program] and [Other School] can only wish they had what we have."

This is the reason that you don't have geographically sensible conferences. Louisiana Tech is invested in the idea that CUSA is better than the Sun Belt. Heck, they spent a decade or so in the WAC refusing to join the Sun Belt Conference with ULL and ULM, so they've got a lot invested in the idea that ULL's conference is bad.

Hasn’t the Sun Belt been ranked better than CUSA 3 of the last 4 years? Wouldn’t it be funny if the two non-football Sun Belt teams left and the Sun Belt made a move on 4 CUSA teams land ULM and Louisiana blocked Louisiana Tech from joining?

Now that is good smack talk, and truly funny stuff. 03-lmfao . As for Louisiana AD, I would bet my house, if there is a response for him, it will be completely professional. However, i wont be surprised if something with the same measure of pettiness wont come from another source.

100% accurate. He is taking his cues from that donor base. it seemed like a very scripted response, as if he was being feed the question. They are probably doing a season ticket push, and trying to fire up the fan base.

Using the Sagarin ratings for all the schools currently in each conference, the Belt has the higher average for 2019, for the last five years, and for the last ten years. The Sunbelt's trailing five year averages are mostly holding steady since 2015 and CUSA's have declined for each of the past five seasons. Why would anybody already in FBS want to move to CUSA?

I don’t know which burn is worse: calling ULL by the wrong name or not acknowledging that ULM exists

Is he the same LaTech AD who ended up having to drive over to Monroe and apologize for smack talking when ULM took offense and cancelled all meetings in all sports or was that a different goober?

You would do us a favor by taking schools away from C-USA. 14 is too many. Please send the first invitation to Old Dominion.

If LaTech were in the Missouri Valley Conference, they would tell all the other conferences that they should move up to the MVC... lol

I'm an outsider with no axe to grind and no dog in the hunt.

I have nothing against Louisiana Tech, but from my perspective, this is one of the roadblocks to a reshuffling of C-USA and the Sun Belt. They see themselves as above ULL and especially ULM. They would consider it a step down to move to a conference with them.

The other roadblocks: the Sun Belt schools are generally happy with each other, and no one outside of Texas wants to go to UTEP.

SLC will make more sense for a superconference with LaTech, ULL and ULM in it than a Belt-CUSA merger, anyway. COVID’s financial ruin will relegate all G5 to FCS where non-A5 conferences will have to become more travel friendly.

I think its more that normally people do not evolve their thinking on subjects like conference perception very quickly.

I noticed it for a long time with MAC fans still thinking it was the 80's or 90's MAC and not today's G5 MAC.

Yes, perception is slower to change. Since the media is the main driver of narratives, it will only change if they pick it up and put it out there. Currently, neither conference gets a ton of pub. As to the AD comments, that’s exactly what you’d expect a rival to say. Much better than apathy...and more entertaining too.
