RE: Virtual Tribe Talks
So I unfortunately thought of this question way too late in the chat to ask it but how will Quinn fit into the 4-out scheme? He's not big enough to play at center but he's much better (imho) playing inside the arc and that's where his game really took off last season.

(06-09-2020 08:17 AM)WMTRIBE75 Wrote:  Dane was asked about bringing in transfers that have to sit out a year and then have a couple of years eligibility as part of an overall way to build a program. He indicated that he is not big on that approach and in this day and time his answer made very good sense. First, he indicated that he felt that the best way to build a program that can sustain success is to bring in freshman who will be a part of the program for four years. But he also cautioned that one of his concerns about the sit one, play two transfers, and I am certainly paraphrasing here, is that these guys ultimately become excellent candidates to eventually be grad transfers and move elsewhere after maybe playing for us for just one year. I can certainly see his point that this could be very disruptive to our program.

He also cautioned about grad transfers, suggesting that many of these guys transfer so that they can have the opportunity to be the guy somewhere else to enhance their own resumé. He lauded Bryce and Tyler for being the exact opposite of that.

One other thing Fischer said was (paraphrasing): "There's a reason a lot of these guys are in the transfer portal...and it isn't necessarily because of the program they're in". So he sounds leery of taking another school's castoffs. Makes me think that he was really desperate last year when he took a chance on Barnes and Hamilton. Those two worked out quite well; I hope it loosens his attitude somewhat for the future (that is, give a guy the benefit of the doubt and investigate him but don't just unilaterally rule transfers out).

I also watched the WBB feed with Coach Swanson. Of the two, I liked the WBB one a little better. I thought there was too much joshing around between Coach Fischer and Coach Kemp and too many of what seemed like inside jokes. The biggest difference, though, was that Swanson introduced his assistant coaches and gave each a chance to talk about themselves and how they got to W&M. I would have liked to have heard that about the men assistant coaches because the only one I know anything about is Julian Boatner.

The most interesting comment was that Dane had the chance last year to set up away then home games with Vermont, Belmont, and Furman and elected to schedule instead High Point, American, and Fairfield. Also confirmed that we play ODU and Hampton away this year plus those 3 home games. Also sounds like he only expects 5 home games for OCC which will include hopefully an Exempt tournament Home game plus one.

The WBB has done an incredible job for their OCC getting UNC to play at the Kap over Thanksgiving plus we play at VA Tech in December!

It is hard to gauge if his enthusiasm for Ben was in the context of the other freshmen he was discussing versus compared to Meckel Harvey. Once the conversation went briefly to Meckel his comments were also positive so we are left on the dark. I submitted a questions about the center position but never got it answered since I think that Quinn Blair might be in the mix also.

I like the matchups we scheduled more (Though High Point is a take it or leave it game). American and Fairfield are both close to some big alumni bases, there was a good Tribe contingent at our game against AU.

I've seen Wight practice several times and watched his HS film from his Junior year. He has real good footwork and can jump. He needed to put on weight and get back to full strength after the injury during his senior year. Redshirting was a simple decision given the other two bigs ahead of him. I've been high on him since we signed him. I think we will be fine with him playing the 4/5.

While I cannot disagree i is nice to schedule games near our fans not sure you can ignore playing better teams but more important you get a HOME game the next year!! Who would you like to see at the Kap playing MBB against us?

Here are the end of the year NET rankings:

Furman 74
Vermont 79
Belmont 101

versus

American 197
Fairfield 285
High Point 333

If you strive to make the Dance then you need to be dancing with the right partners.....

Yeah, I would have happily swapped Furman for High Point, similar ish travel. Vermont or Belmont would've been cool too, but we did play Wofford, who is generally pretty solid.

Even if they aren't always great RPI wise, I'd love to see schools like American or Howard on the schedule more, or more neutral site DC games, but that's obviously a biased perspective as I live in the DC area.

I wonder if the travel budget was a factor in those schedule decisions. American, Fairfield, and High Point are all bus trips, right?

I was bit confused with the rationale that he gave for turning down the offers from Vermont, Rider, and Furman. As he pointed out, all three programs have been really solid the last few years. 25 wins a season teams, as he put it. I would think that we would be falling all over ourselves to have the opportunity to play really solid mid major programs on a home and home basis, as opposed to having to settle for some of the teams that we have been stuck with at home in recent years. His reason for turning them down, if I understood him correctly, was that they wanted to play us at our place the first year and at their place this year, and he said that he always liked the deal where we got the home game in year two. I must not have heard him correctly.

I was also confused by the logic here.

Furman is a traditional rival from our Southern Conference days. Belmont is a great mid-major rival. Vermont has a solid program, but is not where I'd think we would want to build brand awareness.

I get American being in DC and that being a great market for our brand and recruiting. I'd rather see one of the George's with a higher profile for a DC area school.

I always thought that we played High Point, because that was Tony's hometown.

I'm puzzled that we haven't played solid mid majors with NET's in the 36-175 range (avoid top 10% - except for HM payday games- and bottom 50%), with an emphasis on schools that are geographically closer, are former conference foes or with whom we might develop a solid rivalry. I enjoyed our Wofford series sometime back.

At NET's of 74(Furman), 79(Vermont), & 101(Belmont) I would think these are the types mid-major schools which we should strive to compete, develop rivalries and aspire to emulate. We play enough sub 175 NET teams in our conference without seeking out additional bottom half teams to play, imho.

The way I heard it (which is nothing more than that, simply the way I heard it), it sounded like Fischer wanted to avoid those teams because they were too good. The three he played instead were much more likely to be wins (which turned out to be true) and, especially going into last year, he had to assume that the other three were more likely to be losses. While it is true that a new coach's first year is the best possible time to rack up losses, any first-time coach will still want to minimize those losses as much as he can.

Going forward, I would much rather we play any teams in the RPI range of Vermont/Belmont/Furman than in the RPI range of American/High Point/Fairfield --- and that is true regardless of school location except for any teams that we consider natural rivals (like Richmond, for instance).

I totally agree this is what I also heard and I cannot blame Dane for his logic. Also he deserves acclaim for trying to get Richmond back on the schedule. I would love to see that a doubleheader with the football game against Richmond as both schools would benefit!!

Once Richmond gets done the next foe to get back on the schedule is VCU which is possible plus Liberty is now got their program as a top 100 NET. With COVID 19 would love to us play away this year at Richmond, Liberty, and Radford with the goal of adding VCU away next year plus Furman and Vermont!

RE: Virtual Tribe Talks
Coach London said there's 3 schedule possibilities (He also needs better internet, his face was about 5 pixels):

1 - Schedule proceeds as normal, 12 games, road games @ Stanford is on

2 - Conference only schedule, 8 game schedule

3 - 8 games within a conference, based on geographic area (Richmond Twice, JMU twice, Elon twice, Villanova twice - He specifically highlighted Nova, even though Delaware/Towson are closer.)

London said he'd be open to trying to play teams like Hampton and Norfolk State to keep a more local schedule, but it comes down to what each conference decides to do for scheduling.

RE: Virtual Tribe Talks
Coach Johns spoke about working with Hollis Mathis improving as a passer, nothing groundbreaking, pretty typical coach speak, but, importantly, nothing indicating that he has plans to transfer (It was noticed that he'd followed a few FAMU coaches).

Coach Taylor also mentioned that Hollis would be the focal point of the offense.

RE: Virtual Tribe Talks
Other points:

- The format was a little condensed, each coach introduced themselves and gave a bit of a stump speech, which only left time for 1 or 2 questions per coach, unfortunately. Still, it was nice to get to hear from everyone

- Mike London Jr has a lot of energy, I could see him shooting up the coaching ranks. London Jr also mentioned Tim Payne - a Lafayette transfer - as a potential underrated player. He said he's raw, but has a lot of great speed and athleticism

- Coach Taylor thought the OL would be strong suit, and mentioned we might see some sets with 6 or even 7 OL on the field at once

- Revell mentioned Will Michael will be returning as punter, so I guess Eberle is off the team

- Stuff like fans at games and the Stanford game are still up in the air

- London basically smiled and said no comment in regards to new helmets/helmet colors
