Keith Gill is proving to be a poor commissioner, in my humble opinion. Idaho and New Mexico make no sense for a majority of our programs. I'm glad to see Florida, Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina in the mix.
For context, the Sun Belt has a pool of 8 bowls. CUSA has a pool of 11. How did we come up short in that negotiation?

So I'm not the smartest guy, with ESPN getting the first pick, I'm assuming the champion will not automatically go to New Orleans, I guess there is more flexibility for better match ups? Could someone else sum this up in laymans terms.

maybe because they have 14 teams to our 10. so percentage wise SBC pool represents 80% and CUSA pool represents 78.5% also, we share 7 of our 8 pools with CUSA

This is great news for the Sun Belt ... will ensure better matchups for our teams. Don't be blinded by locations, the matchups will be smart.

Most of the locations will still be in our SBC footprint.
If anything, this will lead to better matchups.

seems about right. giving ESPN and SBC match up flexibility where to send the champion. also reads as if the champion will never go to New Orleans bowl.

Hopefully this means we will see G5 conference champs play each other.

Since ESPN had first pick, they’ll probably pick the two best conference champions and put them in a bowl at least convenient to one of their schools. That’s my guess at least.

I guess that's true. It could in theory but I don't see a lot of Champ vs Champ games coming out of this. CUSA did not announce the order it's teams are selected but based on the announcement from them they are obligated to place teams in the New Orleans Bowl, Independence Bowl and Bahamas Bowl prior to the pool. The MWC also is part of the pool but places it's Champ in the Los Angeles Bowl per the MWC press release. MAC only places two teams in the pool and will place the Champ in the Quick Lane Bowl most years I would think.

Not likely based on the announcements from the other conferences.

Picked nit: Isn't the Myrtle Beach Bowl in Conway, SC? Surely Coastal Carolina is the best FB stadium they can get their hands on in the Redneck Riviera Region?

Yes the Myrtle Beach Bowl will be at Coastal's Stadium.

App State fans were about to go ballistic that the Sun Belt wouldn't allow for flexibility for the SBC Champ. Now that Gill has gotten it that way people are still pissy.
Idaho and New Mexico are in the pool. Doesn't mean a team will get those bowls. Especially if ESPN can pack a crowd in Myrtle, Florida or Montgomery

First of all this Bowl pool idea started prior to Gill so this isn't his baby good or bad. Second App St fans wanted a better opponent than the CUSA #2. This pool maybe can do that but I'm not convinced based on the statements from the other conferences that seem to indicate their champion will not necessarily go into the pool. On the plus side though it means we will possibly have a little more variety of Bowl destinations so fans of teams that go to Bowls often won't get burnt out on a limited destinations.

App State fans were upset that a 6-6 western based SBC team would get to go to NOLA while we may be relegated to Montgomery for a third year as eastern champs.
Giving the champion of a conference the best bowl seemed fair.
I would have preferred giving NOLA the champion and letting ESPN pick 2-4, but we all know TV runs CFB so here we are.

???? Didn't you play UAB in New Orleans last year or am I missing something here? App St fans were upset last year when the New Orleans Bowl and ESPN wouldn't work a swap to get App a bigger name opponent in a higher profile Bowl game.
