The power 5 already make all the rules and keep the football money. Unsure how this benefits them.

RE: End of the NCAA?
Welp....for one thing, The P5 uses the mere threat of leaving the NCAA as leverage on the NCAA. Whether the P5 leaves or not, the NCAA knows it is nothing without them...so that makes the NCAA toe the P5s' line. shrug...

The only leverage those outside could bring would be to refuse to play the Power 5 in any sport. They would have a very difficult time scheduling sports outside of football. Also for weak football P5 programs football is going to be misery.

ACC - 14
Big 12 - 10
Big Ten - 14
Pac 12 - 12
SEC - 14

EDIT: Not sure about the smarter part.

SCENARIO I

Every conference has to be at 14. Thus, the Pac-12 adds BYU and *Someone* else out west. Not sure who, but BYU is P5 ready for sure. SDSU? C-State? Boise State won't make it.

Big 12 has to add four, so they add: UCF and USF...they capitalize on the mid-Florida region with two large universities. They grab Cincinnati, who is also P5 ready. The LAST slot will be either Memphis or Houston.

SCENARIO II

The Pac-12 does the same thing.

ACC decides to go Big, so they poach West Virginia from the B12, and also add Cincinnati. They takes them to Sixteen.

The B12 goes to fourteen, and they add: UCF and USF (again, mid-Florida targets), they grab Memphis AND Houston, and to replace West Virginia, they add...who?

(This is just fun speculation....don't take this TOO serious!) 04-cheers

True. Big 12 needs to add us and someone else to get their numbers right.

I wouldn't mind seeing a reshuffling of teams that maybe leads to new conferences.

Would Notre Dame be forced to join a conference under either scenario? They are the 65th team in the power five.

Scenario 3
4 conferences of 16 works out much cleaner.
So the other 4 conferences all poach from the Big 12 to get up to 16.
Notre Dame is forced to join the ACC.
65 "power" teams are forced down into 4x16=64.
One lonely Big 12 team gets left out (K-State, I-State, Baylor, or TCU).

Sorry, I disagree with the thought of teams outside of the new power alliance hurting them by not playing them,in fact I think they don’t really want to play any teams in the next level down.

I could see 4 conferences with 20 teams each, each conference has 2 divisions with 10 teams . The winners of each division plays In the conference championship game & that is the pay in game for 4 team National playoffs. That way everything is “settled on field”, if you don’t win your division, then conference, you don’t play for National championship.

The regular season is 9 conference games with other 9 teams in division 2 out of conference games against teams in other power conference (home &homes) & “buy” with a local fcs school who would gladly take the big paychecks.

Only issue I see with that is all schools would loose 1 home game every other year due to the unbalanced 9 game conference schedule .

If it goes to 80 teams I like our chances of being included, I don’t like current conference affiliation politics if it’s only mid 60’s.

That was my understanding. If the P5 breaks away, it will pay a salary to players. They would pay taxes and be for profit vs non-profit.

RE: End of the NCAA?
By law we have to worry because we are Memphis fans, but when this happens they have to expand to at least 72 schools, and almost for sure at least 80 schools. There is no way around it.

P5 Schools .500 Or Better Conference Record
10 ACC
7 Big Ten
7 $EC
6 Big 12
3 PAC122

33 TOTAL

6 AAC

39 TOTAL With AAC

If you look at P5 schools with a conference record over .500, there are only 22 of them. So even adding the 6 from the AAC to bring your total to 28; that is barely any content that is interesting. Plus, throw in the fact that if there are only 48 or 65 schools, a lot of these schools are going to be playing each other often during the year and in bowl games. It will be great at the top end, but very dull otherwise.

There are 40 bowl games right now. You could eliminate some of them, but eliminating 20 of them will cost way too much money, and you will have a lot of horrible matchups. So unless they try and do a pro style format with 48 schools and drop all of the bottom feeders, they are going to need teams to supply content for the regular season and for bowl season. So figure all 65, most of the AAC and a few other wildcards like Boise, San Diego State, Navy, Air Force, maybe even Appalachian State, Colorado State, Troy or Marshall.
