Nice to sit back and think about all the years of work that got this program to where we are today. Good times.

It's great but by year's end there will be about 5 G5 schools ranked. We are lower than we should be based upon last season & who we have back - just confirms again the P5 bias. We should be a top 15.

Meh, unproven coach. Yes, there is a bias as well but early polls are meaningless. I'm more concerned with the fact that the new coaching staff hasn't had a chance to get some practice in with the team yet.

Early polls lay the groundwork for later polls - and the CFP rankings. By downgrading G5 schools, it provides an excuse to leave us out of the CFP.

If you study the data, you see the pattern. End of year, there are 4-5 G5 schools ranked because it's become obvious. In the immediate aftermath, the "way too early" polls will have multiple G5 schools in them - not quite as many as ended the year, but close. Then as the season approaches, the "real" preseason polls drop all but 1-2 G5 teams out. And those G5 teams have a decreased rating (from the prior year-end) by many more spots than the average P5 team falls.

Many excuses are given for this - recruiting classes, graduating playmakers, coaching changes. But that standard is not applied to all schools equally.

And if we schedule a few more teams above us and beat them convincingly then we prove that we belong higher. It goes back, in part, to the OOC schedule. Not saying it's the end all, be all, but that hurts us as much as anything else.

In a normal season simply beating Purdue would be a big deal

Road win at a Big Ten school. Even if a middling one it would still be a message

Not true. You might get an extra 1- or 2-slot jump by beating Arkansas instead of Troy. But that's it. It doesn't make up for the extra 5 slots you lost compared to P5 peers in the preseason ranking. The data supports this.

If you had an OOC of Bama, LSU, Clemson, Ohio State - or just 2 of those teams - and beat them, then sure. But that doesn't happen for a few reasons (no one beats them all, and they won't play us).

Tommy got sick, got mad, and retired in place - a la Tubby Smith.
He led to this as much as Tubby led to Penny. Sorta kinda - but not deserving of thanks.

Martin, Smith, Graf, Rudd, Bowen, and Fuente are the ones who deserve thanks.

Correct, as long as the AAC remains the top G5. If Memphis played in the SBC or CUSA, an undefeated season would be required (and may not be enough) to be ranked higher than other top G5 schools. The committee has shown it holds AAC competition in higher regard...relative to other G5’s. Can’t imagine fellow conference members are too happy with future OOCs though.

Does G5 and P5 apply to both major college sports, Gulf Coast Gal?

He completely destroyed the football program; he gave up. IF he doesn't have a heart attack, maybe it is a different story. Maybe we continue the momentum. All things being equal, he killed it.

You think it is meaningless to be ranked lower than you deserve to start the season? Based on what?

Completely false. Every ACC team plays a weaker or equivalent schedule and they have no problem getting ranked. They don't end up ranked because they aren't as good as us. With no UConn dragging everyone else down, our schedule will be harder than Clemson's this year.

By starting 23rd----even if we go undefeated (ask UCF)----we will never make the playoffs -(will be lucky to crack top ten)-----If we started off ranked 13th---maybe we make the playoffs. It MATTERS where we start off ranked.
