So, UConn fans didnt care about playing UCF, Memphis, and Houston---but UConn fans will be blowing a wad over Wyoming and FIU? Temple is the only one in that group that makes any sense. Like I said---this was about saving basketball and reviving the fan base. It will be interesting to see how the Hartford stadium lease renewal talks progress.

I promise the stadium lease talks won’t be interesting. The state owns the stadium and UConn is a state school. It will be completely uneventful.

Right? It is funny how the haters are desperately grabbing at any straws that they can to denigrate UConn. They should be more concerned about the upcoming adjustment to the AAC TV deal with EPSN. I have my popcorn maker at the ready for that thread once the numbers are announced.

What do you think the adjustment will be?

It could be very tiny or it could be a high 7 figure number. I don’t want to speculate, though. It is pretty hard to gauge in the current climate.

Lol. You guys are such cry babies. It will be interesting to see what f they even sign a new deal or do something different. It will also be interesting because many of the clauses in contract caused the stadium to be used less often than it could have been. The new lease may be more or less advantageous to UConn. If I remember correctly—-there was something about the lease terms that could cost UConn money if an outside event didn’t cover its costs. Apparently this clause indirectly resulted in the stadium hosting far fewer events than it could have. That’s supposedly one of several reasons it has not had the economic impact that was originally predicted.

So, the state of CT (who owns the stadium) isn’t going to lease it out to its only possible tenant and it going to cripple a university which it also sends tax dollars to for athletics? Yeah, makes perfect sense there, Sherlock.

It could be very tiny or it could be a high 7 figure number. I don’t want to speculate, though. It is pretty hard to gauge in the current climate.

First, I'd separate it from "current climate" - there's already going to be some pulled back from the loss of the basketball tournaments and to a far lesser extent spring sports. If 2020-21 gets lost or severely changed there will be financial adjustments. We may see a true adjustment for UConn's departure in 20-21, or it may not be truly known until 21-22.

But I'm on record that it will be around $5M adjustment. Others are in that ballpark. Many hit the easy button for 1/12th. Some AAC haters (mostly on other CSNbbs fora) say MORE than 1/12th.

But if someone declares he/she wants to revel in reactions when the numbers do come out, then I'll have a lot more respect for his/her comments if he/she has actually made a prediction.

Reading comprehension is important. The inference is that UConn might opt to do something different. I mean, it’s not like UConn doesn’t have one of the more difficult stadium situations in all of college football.

It really doesnt.

Hi!

Edited to add:

Yes we're different.

The institution's mission is "To develop modshiomen morally, mentally, and physically..." so 33 varsity sports with a quarter of the students competing is essential. The 33 doesnt count club sports, the top end of which are nationally competitive. (Rugby, hockey, softball)

And it makes financial sense.
As of the 2017 USAToday story saying "we're mad that the law allows the Naval Academy Athletic Association not to disclose finances!1!!" Gladchuk indicated that 1% of the $42M NAAA budget comes from USNA.
How?
Well, competing most in the Patriot League is huge. That supports the "regional for non revenue" argument, undoubtedly.
And the huge cash cow of Army Navy. Plus a couple million a year from Notre Dame gate.

Everyone of your guys is on schollie. I was under the impression every cadet/midshipman had to participate in a sport. So, I could see how the academies would be obvious exception to sponsoring the bare minimum number of sports.

Everyone has to participate in sports, but even with 25% competing intercollegiately, a couple hundred more in clubs, the vast majority are still in intramurals - including out of season club and some few varsity athletes out of season competing in intramurals. I did battalion cross country, battalion lacrosse, battalion tennis, company flag football, company softball...hmmm, what else? What the heck did I do in four winter intramural seasons?

Anyway...

The scholarship point, yes, The NAAA budget includes $0 for athletic scholarships, as every midshipman, varsity athlete or not is on the same midshipman full ride.

On one hand, that would make the ledger look different if the NAAA had to account for athletic scholarships for those thousand athletes competing in those 33 sports.
On the other hand, let's admit that for every other school, scholarships are far more an accounting issue than a cash flow issue. (If student-athlete John Doe suddenly doesn't attend for whatever reason and the football coach has 84 on athletic scholarship instead of 85, the university doesn't suddenly have a cash shortfall and the athletic department a cash surplus.)

Thanks for clarifying. We can’t do anything different, though. We bulldozed our old on campus stadium years ago. Football will need to be played at Rentschler (and it is a better location for alumni fans, although worse for student fans).

UConn pays an operating subsidy of $250k a year to support the stadium on top of the lease. Basically, UConn doesn’t want to cover losses from unprofitable non UConn events so the stadium can’t book events that they aren’t sure are going to be profitable. I don’t see there being any major changes to the lease terms. Again, it’s the state making a deal with itself.

Yes, yes, UConn lives in a weird bubble of favorable stadium tenants and viable media options... and yet still manages to struggle. It only makes the AD’s ineptitude more impressive.

I don't completely disagree. The AD was run as a BCS conference AD before getting left behind and it never fully accepted that reality. The Pasqualoni hire was horrific at the time and almost nobody was happy about it. Diaco was taking a chance on someone and it didn't work out but giving him the extension after his 2nd year was a mistake. I honestly really supported the Ollie hiring and his first 2 years were awesome. After that it was clear that he wasn't developing his players although he had decent recruiting classes and his in game coaching was subpar. I still think UConn should have negotiated a settlement with him rather than let it get as ugly as it has.

Now, I think we've made the right call. Personally, I put a lot of the blame on UConn fans themselves just never embracing the AAC for how things have ended up. Had the fans embraced AAC basketball more, we possibly could have made it work and rebuilt in the conference. However, that didn't happen so here we are going back to the Big East. For hoops, I think it will be beneficial. The jury is out on football but I think the developments to date suggest that UConn can be viable as an independent program. If UConn can start winning 6 games a season on a regular basis like we did in the first decade of FBS, I think we'll be in decent shape. Certainly another decade of 2 and 3 win seasons could seal the program's fate. We'll see how it goes.

The recruiting class for UConn FB is primarily made up of high level FCS Players. If you look at the guys you are stealing from Texas and a Florida, they don’t have offers from any P5/AAC schools. Your best recruits have MAC offers.

With the recruiting pool in NE shallow, I don’t see how you get to 6 wins with the players you can get. In your natural recruiting area, you aren’t going to steal guys from the ACC or Big 10 schools. You are going to struggle to get kids to leave Southern Jersey or Pennsylvania if Temple offers. How does that change?

The best coach in college FB could not coach your recruiting classes to 6 FBS wins.

This year, your have a shot of beating UMass (not a good win), Liberty and the FCS schools.

Agree^ UConn as an inde is basically UMass. It will be a very rare year when you win 6 games.
