Toungue A zoom Conversation with President Rudd
Technical problems impacted the live event but I got the recording and just listened to it. Can’t see how to post it but I’ll work on it.
The format was people sending in questions to the moderator who did an excellent job.

I am first struck how knowledgeable he is with every detail of the campus. And the effective way he communicates. Looking back to what he has done since he assumed the leadership role in 2014 is excellence Occurring before our eyes.

Highlights as best I can remember. Add to it If you saw it.

Barring C-19 setbacks we are prepared to bring back sport this fall. No real details. We know the June return to campus for modified activities.

Summer projected enrollment is up 15%
Fall projected enrollment based on orientation activity is up 15% over last years record setting freshmen class. Transfer projected enrollment is up but no number.

Patterson realignment project continues. Sidewalks and parking lots are in progress.
Wellness building is on schedule.
Music building is breaking ground this summer.
Campus school renovations are on target and they are adding Kindergarten this fall.
Middle school plans advancing for a permanent location.
Lambuth campus high school being built for 600.
STEM building delayed as we know but the governor confirmed this year’s priority list as been placed intact for the next cycle.

R1 Carnegie University recognition barely missed in the last review and confident we are positioned to reach it in the next review. Talked about the culture of supporting faculty in grants and research, especially productive has been what he called junior faculty.

Once again no tuition increase.

All on-line activities developed in house. UM Global Helped get a jump on the massive online rollout this spring. It will continue to play an important part of the UM moving forward.
Virtual advancement has been made with all student services.

Talked about continued successful efforts to partner with Memphis and Shelby County. A new economic impact study frames the symbiotic relationship that continues to grow. Economic impact also tied into the importance of the R1-CRU status.

Student performance indicators actually increased this spring.
Distributed over $7 million dollars of direct Care funds to students on financial aid.

My observation: the University of Memphis has transformed and the future is unlimited. We need to throw away the inferiority complex and victim mindset and no longer accept scraps. We need to step up with our financial support and our physical presence in supporting academic and athletic activities. Everyone has to find their own comfort zone but we have the leadership in place, the momentum is in place, the respect and notoriety growing.

Any news on when a revamped master plan will be shared with the public? The current one is excellent, but many of those projects have been completed/have begun. It would be great to learn what the next wave of projects will be. Thrilled that we have several cranes on campus. We should always be building someone new and/or updating facilities. Dr and the new UofM Board have done an outstanding job!!

R1 will be an amazing accomplishment once, when, if it happens. A Cotton Bowl-level turning point. Are reviews annual?

They update some institutional changes annually
whatever that means but the next classification update will occur 2021 according to the website. Used to be every 5 years but they seem to have moved to 3 year cycles

‘ The public review period ended on February 15, 2019.

Until the next (2021) update of the classifications, we will make limited changes, most notably, institutional name changes. We will check the IPEDS data periodically to identify name changes. Institutions that seek to have the name changed within our system before it is registered through an IPEDS data product can inform us of the change and we will verify through institutional web sites and other official sources that the name change is official. Requests for other types of change will be considered and made when warranted according to our judgment.’

Other info:
Major Changes

The Doctoral Universities categories have been reshaped to better accommodate “Doctor's degree – professional practice” within our methodology. These degrees, formerly referred to as “first professional degrees” and including such degrees as the MD, JD, Pharm.D., D.Div, etc., have previously not been considered as part of the Basic Classification methodology. The specific changes are as follows:

We expanded the criteria for entering into the doctoral categories. In addition to the former threshold (conferring 20 or more “research/scholarship” doctoral degrees), institutions that conferred 30 or more “professional practice” doctoral degrees across two or more programs were also included.
The first two doctoral university categories include institutions that conferred at least 20 research/scholarship doctorates and reported a minimum of $5 million dollars of total research expenditures through the NSF HERD survey. The research activity index was then used to determine a cutoff between the “very high research activity” (R1) institutions, and “high research activity” (R2) institutions. (Note that this represents a return to the labels used for those categories in 2005 and 2010).
The remaining institutions that either had less than $5 million in research expenditures or conferred fewer than 20 research/scholarship doctorates, were placed into the third, newly named Doctoral/Professional Universities category.

If you haven’t been on campus in the past 10 years, then please go by. You will not recognize the campus.
