Alabama-Huntsville dropping hockey
The University of Alabama at Huntsville, a DII school, is dropping their Division I men’s college hockey program due to the pandemic.

Shame, the only deep south school with D1 hockey, but without a league it would be hard for them to continue.

RE: Alabama-Huntsville dropping hockey
True story: In the fall of 1985, I was on a business trip to Huntsville and met a mixed-race man who was a UAH student-athlete who played hockey for the school.

At the time, I didn't even realize UAH played hockey. And to think a person of color (other than Grant Fuhr) would be playing hockey in the mid-1980s, much less in Huntsville...

... beautiful.

And not having a league, with the WCHA collapsing. I'd expect the cash-strapped Alaska schools to be next.

Hockey in Huntsville, Alabama .... I'm sorry, that just doesn't compute.

Even the NHL struggles south of Nashville. I.E. Atlanta

Good point. We are lucky here in Nashville that the NHL is a rather big deal. Lots of hockey fans here.

The NHL works in Tampa Bay, but not in Miami and Arizona.

Miami is not a good sports town (actually it has had trouble supporting many things a city that size should have little trouble with).

They've been popular for years. I've met quite a few people who came to AL to play at UAH and ending up never leaving the state. I'm sad to see it go.

There's also the SPHL that tends to get decent attendance across the region. Hockey in the South is not quite as DOA as one might think.

Considering 7 of their 9 conference mates were planning on abandoning them this probably wasn’t a terrible choice if they are low on cash

Very disappointing. UAH won the National Title in 1996 and 1998; back when D2 sponsored a national championship.

UAH is the school with the biggest fan base to have dropped hockey. Lots of northern transplants in Huntsville for the rocket program, which was the impetus to start the program.

The Alabama board of trustees had been trying to kill the program for years, finally found an acceptable excuse.

That sucks. As an alum from a school that did the same, I feel the pain

Very sad. :(

I believe there's DIII Hockey. Why don't they just jump there?

The NHL works in every non-traditional market except for Miami & Arizona. And of course Atlanta, but the Thrashers owner didn't care.

Wait. Why would a college hockey program fail? Every college should have hockey because the NHL wants to build up hockey nationwide and nodak said its easy, cheap and, a no brainer idea?

This is a shame. It was great to have a southern school in the mix.
