I believe there's DIII Hockey. Why don't they just jump there?

But how much of D3 hockey is outside New England or the Great Lakes?

Good college sports look out for everyone. College hockey has tried its best to exclude Alabama-Huntsville and their cult following.

They would have to drop entire department to DIII from DII

And there are no southern DIII teams either - all in the Northeast or Upper Midwest

Maybe not. The women's teams at Franklin Pierce, Saint Anselm College, and Saint Michael's College were members of the D3 New England Hockey Conference (formerly ECAC East) but were ineligible for the conference or D3 postseason because they were scholarship teams. Wild guess; if those teams were non-scholarship, they might be eligible for all D3 postseason since D2 does not have any ice hockey championships.

Sad day. Always held out hope that there would be other college teams playing in the South.

As far as I know, playing down a division isn't allowed under any circumstances.

Those schools were playing D-3 teams, but were ineligible for the postseason. They were then booted out as the D-3 schools had no reason to keep playing them.

None of you idiot elators actually use the words UAH did, temporary. UAH is building on campus arena.
Other Southern schools are planning teams:. High Point, Liberty, Lindenwood and maybe more. UAH has temporarily dissolved hockey before only to bring it back.

There is nothing in your article that says it is temporary.

UAH is building a multi-purpose facility that will have ice. Not specifically for the Hockey Team.

Ooooooo, this is going to hurt Nodak, but in the article you link it says that the new facility “WAS” going to be. The plans to build a new arena have obviously been scrapped as well. I understand the vitriol, I guess, but it’s quite sad to see someone calling all the posters on here idiots for not reading the article when you clearly read it wrong. I’m not sure what that makes you...

Somehow there is the word temporary used under hiring when section 4033(b) or whatever is used. UAH has major scheduling issues this coming year with only UAA and UAF wanting them in their conference.

I replied to NoDak but I’ll go one step further, look at the last couple of paragraphs. It says that the arena “was” part of the larger plan. It’s clearly been scrapped as well.

403(b) is a pension plan that has NOTHING to do with Hockey. They are TEMPORARILY suspending these contributions, while PERMANENTLY closing Hockey.

You are an idiot

Am already an idiot here but disagree with that interpretation. Nothing is being said about the huge cost of tennis in Huntsville too. UAH had no choice but to postpone hockey because few would play them.

What's temporary is the 403b matching for employees, you buffoon.

UAH Chargers press release
Quote:To address the financial challenges, we have implemented a hiring freeze, a heightened review of spending, cancellations of faculty sabbaticals, and a temporary suspension of the 403(b) voluntary retirement employer match.

I don't see any evidence either way as to the future of the multi-use facility. On the one hand, obviously there's a budget crunch and building stuff costs money. On the other hand, there's nothing in the announcement that refers to the facility or campus expansion plan. So that might be going forward. (Without the costs involved with converting from ice rink to general gymnasium--I don't know if that's a big cost driver or not)

EDIT: Yes some of the language in the AL.com article assumes that the project is past-tense, but there's no smoking-gun quote in that section. UAH has bought the land. Whether the multi-use arena etc gets cancelled, delayed indefinitely, scaled back or built wholesale is unknown right now.

Because nobody had ever heard of UAH's tennis team. The only college hockey team in the south is (was) notable.

UAH would be a good fit for the Atlantic sun if they went D1
