G5 Conferences Must Align to Survive - CUSA Poster
With the impending recession coming and public college funding cuts inevitable, G5 conferences will need to align to survive.

ESPN has already indicated that the AAC contract will be renegotiated drastically now that UConn has left. And now that live sports has stopped and ESPN is in survival mode a drastic reduction is highly probable.

What would a G5 realignment look like?

Southwest G5
Houston
North Texas
SMU
Tech
Tulsa
Texas State
Rice
UTEP
Arkansas State
Louisiana
UTSA

Good Catch. Tulane for #12

Would this be a attractive conference for UTEP?

This would be a killer conference at 10 but I would go to 12 add USF and UCF ...

Teams made up of schools connected to I-65/75 or short detours from both. I personally dont think you can get better than that with FB and BB

Please link where ESPN indicated the AAC contract would be drastically reduced. I'd like to read about that.

I know you know this but you know I am gonna say it anyway you know:

The AAC and MWC doesn't need the other three G5 conferences. I would even go as far to say the MAC don't need CUSA or the SunBelt.

Sure I have linked it numerous times.

An ESPN exec called UConn “the blue chip asset of the AAC” back in December before all the Corona Virus mayhem.

As you know ESPN is based in Connecticut and ESPN really wanted all the TV rights for UConn Huskie womens basketball. UConn is probably the best brand in all of Womens sports. ESPN specifically negotiated for those rights and paid a premium for them in the AAC contract.

ESPN, AAC Renegotiating Media Rights Deal as UConn Heads to Big East
December 12, 2019 at 4:11 pm ET

“Obviously for us, we did the deal with UConn as part of the conference. That was our preference — that UConn would be there,” Dawson said

The renegotiation is likely to hinge on the perceived value of the UConn brand relative to the rest of the geographically disparate conference.

ESPN can renegotiate new AAC TV deal with UConn leaving conference

Following the loss of UConn, Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand reports in latest newsletter that ESPN now has the right to renegotiate the terms of the 12-year, $1 billion deal it signed with the conference back in March.

How did you know? What if ESPN renegotiates the AAC contract for half now that they have the right to renegotiate?

It’s all fictional anyway- AAC, CUSA, Sunbelt, MWC mergers. Zero evidence at all for any mergers, why not have some fun.

I do know the G5 banded together for relief to the NCAA and multiple AAC schools have cut sport programs and layed off employees.

I don’t know about dream conference. I think Tech could still win that conference, we use to dominate Tulsa and SMU in the WAC and beat Houston down last time we played them.

You are right about the G5 Heartland Conference that could easily be a 2 or 3 bid conference
