Memphis and Ark State schedule football games through 2028

Interesting. Could it be the start of a new scheduling paradigm?

RE: Memphis and Ark State schedule football games through 2028
Winsipedia says they’ve played 56 times. That’s significant. The highest played opponent for Arkansas St and the 3rd highest for Memphis (not too far behind Southern Miss and Ole Miss at 63 each.) It may be a result of the virus but could just be a long-time rival.

It’s a good river rivalry in a region that extends northward through the bootheel into Cairo. They’re an hour-fifteen apart. It gets ASU games in Memphis and Memphis games in Arkansas and both fan bases should be flocking to each other’s stadium.

Memphis to the SBC! More of the same...recent OOC schedules have been SBC friendly with Ga. St, USA, ULM and more on the way. Should rotate Ark. St with UAB, USM and MTSU... add in La Tech and that’s a good a good stable of regional G5 competition. Why not? At this point, the Tigers have shown it’s possible to make a New Years bowl out of the AAC w/o a grueling (P5 heavy) OOC slate.

I think you all are going towards a 2 p5 game 2 g5 game schedule. I wouldn't be surprised to see you playing those sort of teams as your g5 opponents. I expect you will continue to try and get those sec teams as much as possible, but be more selective with your other p5 games.

Arkansas St is not a bad get for an OOC opponent. The top of the Sun Belt (Arkansas St, Troy, Appalachian St, UL Lafayette, Georgia Southern, and others a season every so often) are good programs. Take those 5 and add North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, UAB, Marshall, Florida Atlantic, and Old Dominion and you have a much better conference.

SBC
West: North Texas, Arkansas St, Louisiana Tech, UL Lafayette, Southern Miss, UAB
East: Florida Atlantic, Troy, Georgia Southern, Appalachian St, Old Dominion, Marshall

CUSA
West: UTEP, UTSA, Texas St, Rice, UL Monroe, South Alabama
East: Florida International, Georgia St, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, Middle Tennessee St, Western Kentucky

I don’t. P5 home and homes are getting harder and harder to come by. The pres. okayed 2 for 1s to open more opportunities. FCS games will be needed to fill out schedules. Even though the Tigers play in an off campus stadium and arena, they are at the top/near the top of G5 schools in terms of self generating revenue (tix sales + contributions). While the fanbase moans and complains about competition level, they continue to support the program. I don’t anticipate any changes until said support begins to falter. When it does, the admin tends to act quickly.

Yes, the militant UCF strategy of "we are P6 so home and home with other P or Bust" has turned out to be a ... Bust. Have to be flexible.

I think playing Ark-State is a natural for Memphis and vice-versa. An easy 70 mile bus ride, and Ark-State is a pretty good quality opponent for a fellow G5.

The point being lost on some is that Memphis has been very resistant to playing this series (at times in the past) even though they have played recently.

I think the next trend you could soon see is the bigger G5's with good attendance will also become buyers of games vs G5's. There are going to be lots of G5's that need money and if you have good attendance---you can make more off a home game than you can a buy game. If you can buy a game from a nearby G5 team that doesnt have to pay a lot to travel to your stadium---it can be a win-win. Using that strategy---the upper end G5's can still take 2-for-one games against P5's without undermining SOS with necessary FCS buy games.

Regardless of the number of times ark st and Memphis has played, the series does nothing to excite the Memphis fan base. Good for once in a while but that’s about it. I rather play souther miss and UAB instead of asu, Georgia state, south Alabama, la-Monroe etc. Of course that’s my opinion and not everyone from our fan base agrees with my sentiment.[/align]

As a long-time Tiger fan, I agree with you overall. But if Memphis is to play a Sun Belt foe, ArkState makes the most sense. And ASU fans will travel to Memphis rather well. I'm fairly supportive of this move.

Makes a lot of sense since they are so close to each other. The G5 needs to do more of this local scheduling. UMass schedule cost for football went up 100k when the MAC exercised the ultimatum, one of three options if Temple left, in the contract. That said we are scheduling more locally and every G5 team should be doing the same.

UCF has already scheduled 2 buy games with Uconn and Liberty in the near future. I’m fine with it if it replaces our FCS game, but not if it replaces our FAU/FIU game.

That's a good insight. There really is a significant difference between a UCF, which is drawing a legit 40,000 fans to its games, and is now making $6m in media money, and a typical MAC school that is getting $1m in media and is only putting 8,000 or 9,000 fans in the stands. It could make good economic sense for a UCF to pay an Eastern Michigan to come to Orlando.

Of course, the problem will be that the MAC school will be angling for a date with a real P5 school because the latter can still pay considerably more than a UCF or Memphis can.
